Does anyone else feel like March is just flying by? I guess this is what happens when we have two weeks that drag past with snow days. Here are your reminders and updates for tonight and the rest of the weekend.

If you have not yet presented you will need to settle this next class so that you have your grades settled moving into the last two weeks of the quarter. For the weekend work on meeting your next reading goal of being to page SEVENTY (70) in Purple Hibiscus and remember to have your books and your timeline sheets next class as we will be working through those as we go over what we've read so far.
AP English III
Your first task is to read through to the end of chapter eleven of Invisible Man by Monday. These chapters are very significant and I gave you several things to think about as you read in the post below. In addition, take the work from today's class on Langston Hughes's poetry, especially the idea of identity creation and passivity versus agency, as you look at chapters ten and eleven. Keep in mind that your rough drafts of your research papers are also due on Monday and we will begin writing conferences that day.
For Wednesday you'll have your first examination on Invisible Man - it will cover the Prologue through to chapter eleven as well as the external texts from Hughes, Baldwin, and Hurston. You would do well to begin preparing for this over the weekend. Come to class on Monday with questions for me or Ms. Alley about the test.
Lastly, your poetry analysis and comparison is due to Ms. Alley on Friday of next week. Follow the instructions that she gave you on the assignment as you complete this. Remember that the same rubric you used for the symbolism assignment. Discuss any questions you have with Ms. Alley - remember that you can tweet to her if you would like to do that.
There's a lot for you all to do next week - now it's time to make up for that time we lost due to snow. Make sure to ask for help if you need it; we know there's a lot to do, but we also know that you can do it.

You all will have a test next class on cases and you should be preparing yourself tonight. Here are some notes for you to prepare yourselves.

- Know your case endings for nouns, adjectives, and any other type modifiers (demonstrative pronouns, etc.)
- Russian I - you only need to know your singular endings
- Russian II - you need to know your plural endings
- Russian I and II - make sure that you know how to work with verbs. Russian I - look at your verbs from chapter one and chapter two. Russian II - you're going to want to look at your verbs of motion as you'll need to work with these on the exam.
- You'll all have dehydrated sentences to construct on your tests.
- Make sure that you know about the different cases - there will be a matching section related to the different cases and the job that the case has. This will be a big section of both exams.
Russian II - We will be finish weather report presentations next class. Make sure that you're ready for for that.
Russian I - I will be looking over the rough drafts of your family writing next class. Make sure that you have all your paragraphs drafted so that I can give you feedback next class.

You have your next reading goal for Tuesday. Make sure that you are reading nightly (about ten pages) so that you are caught up for next week. If you still need to present, we can do this on Friday.

We will have our final day for presentations on Thursday. Please be prepared to present your work and to explain what your item is and why your item is important to Nigeria. Thursday will be the last day to present, so make sure that you have your work ready.
In addition you have your next reading goal to complete which is to be to page thirty-six in Purple Hibiscus. Please make sure to bring your book with you next class as I would like to have a book check to make sure that everyone has what they need. After this you'll need to make it to page seventy by Monday, so I would keep reading ahead to meet that goal.

- what happens at the end of the chapter - how is this an echo of the battle royal?
- the hospital scene in chapter eleven is another scene of rebirth and transformation
- pay attention to the allusions to the Odyssey here
- who are the enemies in the hospital
- what is going on with power and control
These two chapters are very rich. Make good annotations and make sure that your motif charts are complete up to this point.

Tonight for homework you have a bit more writing to do with the genitive singular and plural. Work on exercises four and five from the handout. In exercise four, make a list of what the students have already bought. You may be using a dictionary for some of the words. You have more of a glossary at the bottom of the page. Then, for exercise five, write five more sentences saying what else these students would need to buy for the rest of the week. You'll turn all this in next class.

For homework this weekend continue with your reading and annotating of Invisible Man. You will be held responsible for chapters seven through nine for Tuesday's class. Keep up with your motif charts as these are going to be very useful for you. Notice that the Invisible Man is going through a big transition and he's moving to a new place. Note his first impressions of the place.
For your research papers I'll be returning your outlines to you on Tuesday. You will then have until the 16th of March to complete your rough draft. Remember that you must submit fifty percent of your draft. My recommendation is that you submit your introduction paragraph and at least two body paragraphs. Make your point and explain! Your final draft is going to be collected on March 26th. Ms. Alley will collect that since I'll be on an airplane at that time.

Over the weekend you have two things to accomplish. First you have your weather reports to
finish. Here are the requirements for
your weather report:
State the date in Russian form.
- Describe the weather in Durham, North Carolina for your date: temperature and conditions.
- Explain using the dative case what someone would need to take with him/her for this weather.
- Describe the weather in your Russian city for your date: temperature and conditions
- Explain using the dative case what someone would need to take with him/her for this weather or an activity that would be good for this type of weather.
- Using the future tense, explain what the weather will be tomorrow in your cities.
- Create a visual for Durham and your Russian city with weather information in Russian. Use PowerPoint for this and send me your slides.
- Remember that you will be submitting this to me online - send it to my gmail account mrmillerjhs @ gmail (dot) com. If you're using a prezi share the link to me. If you're using powerpoint put it in Google Drive and then send it on to me.
The other work that you have to do is your analysis of my
shopping receipt. Answer all of the
questions and make sure that you are writing out all of the prices in
Russian. Make sure that you're checking
your work and your use of the genitive case either singular (non-count) or
plural (count).

- Submit your outline and your original research proposal in your research portfolio. I want to see your original with your outline so I can see how things have developed from the original approach to this. Remember that you should be building more specificity in your paper. What's the key point you are trying to make here?
- Read Invisible Man. You need to be to the end of Chapter Six (150). As you read, continue to develop your motif charts and vocabulary. Make sure to complete your preparation work for the Socratic Seminar based on Ms. Alley's instructions.

Be sure that you continue to read Purple Hibiscus nightly. You have your next reading goal (pages 19 to 36) to get you to next Thursday's class. In addition, remember that next class will be your last chance in class to work on your research projects. These will be presented next week as a major grade.
Everyone remember that progress reports go out next week. If you have missing quizzes or assignments make sure that you have made these up by Friday.

All Juniors - Even though you weren't in class today we still did a lot of work. Please see me outside of class (I'd recommend tomorrow morning) so that we can go over what you missed.

Today in class we worked through the rules and procedures for using fill vowels in the genitive plural. Please focus on learning these rules and these patterns. For tonight, I would like for you to do some work with the genitive case - either singular or plural depending on the situation. For homework tonight, think of your favorite dish (mine would be macaroni and cheese with bacon and kale). Go through your house and think of what you have a lot of (много) and what you have too little of (мало). Write sentences expressing what you have.
Use the genitive plural if it is a count noun (something like apple where you can count the individual apples). Use the genitive singular if it is a non-count noun (something like flour where you can't count the individual grains, you just look at is as a whole thing.) We'll use this to do our work on Thursday.

For homework tonight I want you to continue working with the three verbs we studied more today - нравиться, хотеть, любить - as well as working with your vocabulary and with cases. Using your chapter two vocabulary, complete the ten questions by filling in the blank. Then, using your knowledge of cases, take the supplied answer in the nominative case in parenthesis and give the answer. Here is number one:

Make sure that your journals are complete. Make sure that you are studying nightly to practice your grammar and vocabulary. A great thing to do is to listen to Russian music and follow along with the lyrics - think about the grammar being used, use the Yandex translator to define words and build your vocabulary. Keep using and studying Russian during this time. There's a YouTube channel called ELLO which is all Russian music videos.

When we return there will be a new, accelerated reading schedule as well as a quick overview on the idea of research outlines before you need to turn them in. It was great seeing all of you again today. Here are your reminders to get you to Wednesday's classes.

For tonight you need to work in your journals to revise or rewrite your last entry. You should have two entries in your journal by Wednesday - one for week one and one for week two. Make sure that your week two entry includes the phrase about good on good (маслом масленное) as well as the verbs of studying used in the correct forms and with the correct cases.
Outside of this feel free to work on studying your genitive plural irregulars that you learned today.
Lastly, the weather reports have been moved to next week (Tuesday and Thursday) you'll also likely have a quiz on Genitive Plural next week - prepare yourselves accordingly. Missing assignments and quizzes need to be made up by Friday of this week for progress reports next week.

For tonight, if you did not finish the twelve sentences about your animals, please make sure to finish those tonight. Make sure to have two answers for each of your questions - one for your masculine animal and one for your feminine animal. Use adjectives as much as you can to practice with your case endings.

Make sure that your journals are ready to be collected since I will be seeing you our next day in school. Continue practicing with your new vocabulary and grammar. Make flashcards of the different endings and be able to identify which case is signified by which endings. Spending a few hours with this throughout the day (twenty minutes here, thirty minutes there) just drilling these cards can help you to memorize and get this information down pat.

Make sure that you are caught up on your reading of Baldwin and on the reading of Invisible Man, chapters two through three. Bring any lingering questions you have from the first four chapters (prologue to chapter three) as we will be spending a good chunk of time working through the first section of the text and having some time to talk through this opening.
If you did not submit your writing on the symbolism of the Battle Royal - make sure to get that in. If you are going to submit an electronic copy, send that directly to Ms. Alley at kta5duke (at) gmail (dot) com.
Lastly, continue researching. You should be working nightly to find sources, analyze them, and refine your argument. Outlines will be due soon so you must continue pushing forward to make these deadlines.

Homework for A Day Students - The Weekend!
Russian I
This weekend since you have Russian on a Friday you have an entry in your journals due for me on Tuesday. Try to continue the same type of work that we were doing in class about our animals. Write a variety of sentences using adjectives and nouns in as many cases as you can. The more that you use the language the quicker you will acquire it.

You also have your journals to write this weekend. Make sure that you attempt to use the verbs of studying as you write this weekend - remember the case connections that you need in order to work with each of the verbs. In addition, we will be working on our weather reports more in class on Tuesday. Presentations will happen starting on Thursday. This is an extension for your projects.

- Read James Baldwin's "Notes of a Native Son" - be sure to annotate heavily and to draw connections between this piece and Invisible Man. If you don't have a copy of 50 Essays you can find the piece at this link.
- Your writing on the symbolism within the Battle Royal scene is due on Monday. Make sure to follow all of Ms. Alley's guidelines in completing this assignment.
- Work on your research task. This next week you should focus on researching your topic and refining both your topic and your argument. Remember that specificity is the name of the game with this assignment to be able to do it well. Use the resources from the Durham County Library available at this page. To login and use SIRS you will need a Durham County Library card - if you don't have one, get one so that you can use this source. Make sure that as you are doing your work you are taking notes for your research - feel free to use the notecard structure I gave you in class if you like that idea.

Over the weekend do some pre-research on Igbo/Ibo culture, the politics of Nigeria or elements related to Catholicism. Try to determine which topic you would like to research for your research project. We'll begin these projects next class!

- Make sure that you have completed the reading of chapters two and three. Chapter two is long and complicated and also quite disturbing - get through it. Use your motif chart to guide you through the reading - all of the motifs show up in chapter two. Pay attention to new characters like Trueblood and Norton. Consider any patterns you're seeing in the Invisible Man's behavior. Annotate! Draw connections. In chapter three there's a bit of a break because it's kinda short - note the motifs - you have all but one represented.
- Begin work on your first mini-essay on the symbolism of the Battle Royal scene. Make sure that you follow the instructions given by Ms. Alley. Remember that your draft is due on the 16th.

Finish your reading of Prologue and Chapter One from Invisible Man. As you read, make sure that you complete your motif chart for both portions. You will have all of the motifs in both of these chapters so make sure that your chart is thoroughly done. Remember that you have a reading guide to use as you are working through the chapter. Use this to either answer the questions explicitly or to guide your understanding as you annotate.
Also, you need to do a bit of pre-research on SIRS or other acceptable sources and complete your Research Question sheet. If you don't have notes you can request a .pdf of the them from me via email. Also many of these texts are available online. A Young Doctor's Notebook is on Netflix. You can also check out a book for the weekend.
Your quiz will have multiple choice, vocabulary, and a short answer. You'll get a progress report and have an extra credit opportunity.
Ask for help if you need it.

If you need the weekend to complete your project take it, but make sure that you finish. On Monday you'll also be assessed on the use of adjectives, possessive pronouns, and demonstrative pronouns in all cases. There will be multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank, and also a dialogue with listening and questions. Remember that all of the information is in your textbooks and the dialogue is also printed in your textbook at the beginning of chapter two. The audio of the file is located here and starts at about 15:00. The exercises at the end of the chapter can also be helpful. I'm available tomorrow for questions.

A lot of you were excited about your projects today, and that excites me. For the weekend, make sure that you complete exercise I and also work with exercise III, the second one is only for extra practice if you want/need it. We will have some time to work on the visuals on Monday in class, but if you have a plan or a rough draft going into that, all the better - hopefully our Russian weathergirls helped to inspire those.
Make sure to those of you who picked obscure cities that you use the general area to cite the weather, look up the region and climate data.

Ms. Alley was not able to find an online copy of the introduction so if your copy of the novel doesn't contain the introduction please stop by to get yourselves a copy of the reading. As you read the introduction, consider what Ellison says his purpose is in writing the text. In addition, consider the major themes or ideas that you see in the introduction as they will be significant as we begin in the prologue next class.
Lastly, remember that with this book you're expected to basically read ten pages a night for nine weeks. You can do this - don't get behind and then don't blame us when you fail your reading quizzes.

To pair with your diagram of your house's floor plan make sure that you have three sentences about what is in these rooms or what happens in the rooms. Remember that the goal is to communicate and own what you say.

Remember as you write you need to first have a clear topic sentence which answers the question and gives a reason behind your answer. You need two clear details in your writing with explanation which help prove your point.
Show what you've learned about good composition and writing and put this in to this assignment. Don't also forget that the last day to turn in the tone assignment is next class.

We didn't get as far as I would have liked today, but we had a good class nonetheless. For tonight, work on your exercise focusing on using the word интерес. Write a brief story using this word in a variety of contexts. Make up a situation. Project to your future. Whatever you'd like, but use the word and use it correctly. Remember the examples you have and the analysis we did in class. Come and see me if you need help.
Also remember that if you haven't submitted your translation sentences these are due on Friday for final call.

These two assessments will count as two grades. Make sure that you have your copy of The Crucible with you next class as Ms. Alley and I will be looking at your annotations of the text.

There's no homework tonight except to finish the tone/image assignment from "I Have Visited Again" by A.S. Pushkin. Make sure that if this is reading as a zero on your PowerSchool that you have settled this by next class or those zeroes will become permanent.

Take notes. Be able to explain the difference between the singular and plural usage in your own words on Wednesday.

Homework for the Weekend - B Day Classes - 1/23/2015
English II
If you didn't finish your tone illustration from Pushkin's "I Have Visited Again" then you will need to finish that over the weekend. In addition, don't miss assignments in the second semester. If you didn't get your vocabulary work done, you'll need to make sure that you consistently do the rest of your assignments for the quarter! Don't make the same mistakes you made last year.
AP English III
For homework this weekend you have two things to do. First, finish reading The Crucible. As you finish reading, finish your annotations. Pay attention to the ideas you see in the text and the ideas you've seen throughout the whole text. Make sure that your covers show your reading from the text.
When you've finished the text, then move on to your writing assignment. Your writing is a simple three paragraph essay which answers the prompt: What would Arthur Miller think of Mean Girls? As you write follow this structure:
Paragraph One: DADS Argument based on the prompt.
Paragraph Two: Body Paragraph. Use an example from The Crucible as well as one from Mean Girls to support and prove your argument.
Paragraph Three: Brief conclusion. Reconnect to the argument.
In all your piece should be no longer than one page. Focus on getting to the point quickly and clearly. Answer the question and be insightful.

If you didn't get your vocabulary work done, you'll need to make sure that you consistently do the rest of your assignments for the quarter! Don't make the same mistakes you made last year.
AP English III
For homework this weekend you have two things to do. First, finish reading The Crucible. As you finish reading, finish your annotations. Pay attention to the ideas you see in the text and the ideas you've seen throughout the whole text. Make sure that your covers show your reading from the text.
When you've finished the text, then move on to your writing assignment. Your writing is a simple three paragraph essay which answers the prompt: What would Arthur Miller think of Mean Girls? As you write follow this structure:
Paragraph One: DADS Argument based on the prompt.
Paragraph Two: Body Paragraph. Use an example from The Crucible as well as one from Mean Girls to support and prove your argument.
Paragraph Three: Brief conclusion. Reconnect to the argument.
In all your piece should be no longer than one page. Focus on getting to the point quickly and clearly. Answer the question and be insightful.

Homework for A-Day Students: 1/22/2015
English II
You all have no homework for the weekend except to finish your tone illustrations if you did not finish in class. As we move forward, please make sure that you continue to meet expectations and complete all assignments. Today a lot of you missed the chance to submit your vocabulary work which does not set a good trend for the rest of the quarter.
Russian I
For the weekend you have two tasks to complete. First, dress up your basic sentences by adding adjectives. Remember the rules of agreement for case and gender. Use colors or any other adjectives from your vocabulary sheet as the goal with this is to create complete sentences using grammar and vocabulary concepts.
In addition, you have the reading for chapter two. Here is a link to the Chapter Two audio. First there is the vocabulary read aloud for you and then you have the reading. With the reading, follow along and read it several times. Then, do your analysis of the reading. Find all pronouns, nouns, and adjectives and analyze the case in them. Make sure that you have your original illustration with annotations as well as your updated version. In addition, you can have a notecard to help with your presentation. Using your new vocabulary for the day create a paragraph which uses five of these words. When you use the word in your paragraph, try to make sure it's clear you know the meaning of the word. Don't just say something like, "I had a tsar." Tell me something along the lines of. "The tsar hated everyone and nobody could do anything about it. He was too powerful." Show me what you learned. You can use vocabulary from the lecture/game about Russian culture or from Pushkin's poem.

A quick note about some rooms as you put them in prepositional case: If the ending is ая in the nominative, like гостиная, then the ending becomes -ой in the prepositional, like в гостиной.

We will finish presentations about Russian holidays on Thursday and then move on into the new unit on weather. Also, I have a wonderful preview for you all - we're finally going to start learning plurals in all of the cases! Get ready for a lot of work with your favorite Russian sound Х!

Oh My! The Whole Last Few Days...
Everyone! My sincerest apologies for leaving off the blog post for two days. Here's what needs to be done over the long weekend as well as some reminders.
Russian I
We will begin a new unit on Tuesday which will look at adverbs, adjectives, and a few other types of pronouns. To prepare for this, start looking at your chapter two vocabulary. Much of this vocabulary focuses on the house and family, so I would recommend labeling things around your house to help you. Make some flashcards and mark stress on them. Just work on identifying and memorizing.
We're going to keep working on cases in this next unit and how these parts of speech (especially adjectives and pronouns) continue changing for case. Practice with your case endings. Memorize. Drill and practice. Ask for suggestions if you need them.
Russian II
Tuesday will officially be the end of the semester for you. We will finish the exam and then finish project presentations on Russian Holidays. I've received two new prezis but I don't know how the other groups are planning on presenting, make sure that you are prepared for Tuesday.
In addition, you've all seen the exam now so I expect that you'll be studying over the weekend and practicing with what you've seen. Expect a few additional questions on the same concepts to test your knowledge.

Some of you still need to tie up some loose ends from the end of the semester on Tuesday. I know that a few of you have made arrangements to take the Heroes Unit Quiz with me after-school. Thank you for that, make sure to meet your commitment. In addition, there are also the speeches. The scores will be entered on Monday and finalized on Tuesday - so if you have your speech and haven't yet submitted it (you'll see a score of 50%), then stop by and see me on Tuesday.
I also want to take a quick second to remind you all about second semester. No more free passes.

Over the weekend you need to begin with your study of The Crucible. If you have yet to begin your reading of the play then you will now be paying the piper with some heavy reading for the weekend. Your task is to read to the end of Act II. As you read, you must also start your front cover annotations on characters. Remember that since this is a play you will be given a character list in the play. Use this.
The language of the play is simple and direct. So look for the complex in the simple. Read Miller's "Why I Wrote The Crucible" - annotate it heavily and understand his context and purpose for the play. From here, you should be able to begin the annotation of your back covers and within the margins of the text. Remember that this is an allegory - connect the dots.

Snow Day Number One - 1/14/2015
Having this day off today means that we lose that day off next week, oh well. Keep in mind that this means when we return on Thursday that we will be having an A day. Here is what all of you can do today to make sure you're ready for the end of the quarter.
English II:
All of you should take this time to prepare for your quiz on The Odyssey, Musashi Miyamoto, and Exodus. Remember to review characters, the elements of being a hero, and the elements of the hero's cycle. If you don't have notes - ask a friend or send an email to me.
In addition, be aware that you need to turn in your speech and do your presentation if you did not do this on Monday/Tuesday. Thursday and Friday will be the only days left to do this, so get it taken care of. A lot of B-day students were not in class because of the lockdown; make sure you submit this last major assignment.
The only minor assignment you can still submit is the bumper sticker assignment. Do that if you do not have a grade.

You have your mid-term next class. Please let me know if you need help as you are studying and preparing. I had a bit of a mini-review session with some Russian II students yesterday which was really productive and went over some key parts of the exam. Let me know what you need!

I enjoyed the activity today in our mad libs activity. Tonight you need to finish your preparation for the mid-term examination. Make sure that you can work within all six cases in Russian and that you can work with the verbs. If you are able to do this with few to no errors then you're in good shape. There are several online exercises on the UCLA Beginner's Russian website as well - you'll have to pick and choose to see what is most useful for you.

Remember that if you did not present your speech today in class then you will need to present on Wednesday or outside of class. Also, if you didn't have your speech ready to be turned in today, make sure that it is ready for us on Tuesday or Wednesday. For tonight - focus on reviewing for your quiz next class. This weekend your major goal is to finish the final draft of your This I Believe speech. Remember that in this assignment you need to speak as someone else - don't use your voice, but that of another person. Follow the guidelines on the assignment sheet. Make sure you have a title for your speech.
You will need to read your speech aloud - if you don't want to read in front of the class then make sure that you plan to read privately to me and Ms. Gerdes.
This is your last major test grade of the quarter so make sure that it shows your best work!

Tonight everyone you need to continue working on the verbs of motion assignment on the film Ирония судьбы. Please make sure that you have at least two sentences written using two different verbs in each group - this is the next step of the assignment. Make sure to really understand the difference between the sentences when you use the different verbs of motion. Continuing to practice and work with these concepts is really the only way to improve on these.
Also, please do what you need to do in order to be successful. Too many of you had blank homework sheets today in class - this is completely unacceptable. You need to try and come to me with questions if you don't know what to do. That's the acceptable way forward.

For tonight, read David Sedaris's "Me Talk Pretty One Day." It's available at this link. You can also read the copy from 50 Essays, First Edition. The other editions have a different Sedaris piece. Make sure that if you use the piece from the link that you only read pages one through five, the essay itself.
In addition, remember that you have your exam on TAoHF on Tuesday next week and your presentation of your website projects on Thursday. We'll spend time on Friday preparing for both of these things.

Homework for A Day Students - 1/6/2015
And now welcome back to all of you! Here are your reminders for getting you to the next class.
English II
Your final drafts of your speeches are due on Monday. You will need to make sure that you have a final draft, your draft packet, your outlining sheet, and your assignment sheet. If you are missing any of these documents, make sure to get them so that you can receive full credit.
Next class we will continue watching the film and hopefully finish it.
Also - apologies for this but we will need to deal with the DPS English test next class. Remember that this is a skills test for which you cannot study. We'll go over it before we start on Thursday before we start the assessment.

For tonight you should focus on writing the answers to the questions on the cartoon we watched in class. Remember to use the question as a starter to your answer. Use your grammar and attempt all of the portions so that we can have our workshop next class. If you'd like I'm putting the cartoon below so that you can watch it again if you need to.

Your final drafts of your speeches are due on Monday. You will need to make sure that you have a final draft, your draft packet, your outlining sheet, and your assignment sheet. If you are missing any of these documents, make sure to get them so that you can receive full credit.

For tonight finish your sentences using verbs of motion to describe actions in the film Ирония судьбы. Remember to start with the English version of what you want to describe and then move on to the Russian. Use the notes on the back for locations and character names.

Welcome Back Everyone! Homework for 1/5/2015 - B Day Students

For homework tonight you need to prepare for next class's drafting workshop on your Odysseus "This I believe..." speech. Remember to take your work from your drafting packet and rewrite it as a whole speech either typed up or written out. As you write the paragraphs, try to create transitions from one paragraph to the next so that your writing flows seamlessly from one idea to the next.
Make sure to have these speeches with you as these speeches will likely be your last major grade of the nine weeks.

You've finished reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn so now we just need to finish the connected work. You will finish up your seminar on the end and whole of the novel with Ms. Gerdes on Wednesday - make sure that your texts are fully annotated to reflect the thinking you've done as you've been studying this novel.

Hey everyone. I'm getting my computer out today to get started on some things I need to get done over break. I figured I'd take this chance to give you some progress checks.

Hopefully by this point you have taken the work from your drafting packets and transferred it onto paper or typed it put. Remember to work on putting your paragraphs together in a way that they flow together. Go smoothly from one idea to the next. Transition.

Keep reading Huck. Annotate and read closely. Notice how ideas come to a conclusion and how Twain resolves his main points.
For your group projects get your analyses written and uploaded as well as your annotations. I can take a look at them on your sites and give feedback, as can your group.
Lastly, remember your illustration assignment! Find the illustration, annotate and recreate.

Go through your books and study what we've done. Memorize case endings and functions. Practice with nouns and possessive pronouns. Use Russian and practice. Try to set a review goal each day and meet that goal. You know what I'll ask you to do - be perfect. Work hard to reach this point and prepare questions for me when we return.

You do not have anything that you need to submit over break but you should all be working daily on reviewing and studying the content we've learned so far this year. I would highly recommend the exercises in our textbook, the exercises from the Schaum's Russian Grammar, or the online textbook from UCLA located at this link.
Remember everyone that when we return from the break we will have cumulative mid-term examinations. Focus on the topics we've studied, review and practice. Spend time with authentic uses of the language like television shows or movies - especially those of you in Russian II to learn more about the use of verbs of motion or aspect as it's really more of a sense of how it works more than anything else.

- Complete your illustration assignment - remember that our first day back will have some time for asking questions and getting assistance. Be sure that you are prepared for this help session. Remember that our presentation of these illustrations will fall on the second class after break - Wednesday, January 7, 2015.
- Continue working on your group projects - over break you should finish your analyses of the different pieces and get them uploaded. You should be able to finish everything except the synthesis. We will knock this out when we return.

Tonight everyone you need to start reviewing for your semester exam which will fall on the final day of the semester, 1/16/2015. The mid-term exam will have everything from Russian I as well as the work we have done on aspect, numbers and counting, and verbs of motion. Practice and review nightly. I would also recommend going through your portfolios and looking at your previous mistakes - this is key in starting to begin your growth.
Lastly, do some pre-research on your holiday choices. Rank your top four as we will pair off for holidays next class.

- Using your textbooks revise your sentences. Your sentences must be ready to turn in next class with no mistakes. For details on this assignment, look below to last class's homework.

Tonight for homework you have a bit of a process - here's that process outlined for you. Go back to the post which has the exercises and finish the last exercise on using all verbs of motion. Repeat this exercise until you have 100% correct. Then, once this is done, move on to your handout. On the handout, you need to fill in the blank on all sentences and then select a group of five in a row. Once you have selected these, go to VOKI and create your VOKI reading your selection. Send your VOKI to mrmillerjhs (at) gmail (dot) com - with your name in the subject line or the message. I will confirm receipt next class.

We will be returning to the computer lab next class to finish our work on the verbs of motion and the VOKI assignment. Please continue to review these online exercises as you keep studying and reviewing over the weekend.
For homework this weekend I would like for you to do some writing in Russian. Select two verbs of motion (which is actually four when you consider the pairing) and the verb носить/нести. Create eight to ten sentences using these verbs in a variety of contexts and tenses to explain your motion and travels. Feel free to be creative, they don't have to be factual, just grammatically correct.

You are also doing some writing this weekend. Using our verbs читать, писать, говорить, и жить create sentences which use these words with at least three additional cases (nominative, accusative, prepositional, genitive, dative). Remember to pair your sentences with translations in English.

Russian I
The presentations on your Russian cities are due on Tuesday. Remember that for extra credit you can include some sort of cultural relic from your city and explain it. We wrote our sentences in Russian in class. Make sure that these sentences appear in your presentation. I'd recommend using http:\\russian.typeit.org and copy/paste from the window to your document.
Practice your reading of the sentences. Be prepared to present on Tuesday.
English II
Anything that you have to do in terms of major assignments needs to be settled soon. Nothing will be accepted past the beginning of Winter Break.
For tonight you don't have any homework per se, but it would be a good idea to work on your Odysseus speeches. A lot of you wrote some good main idea statements. Try to move forward with an example. Tell a story!

Homework for B-Day Students: 12/4/2014
AP English III
This weekend you have a few goals to accomplish so that we can move forward to next week. Over the weekend make sure that you complete your reading of Oluadah Equiano as well as the next chapter chunk from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, chapters seventeen through twenty-two. In addition, you will have a collection of your third installment of vocabulary cards next week. You'll need five new cards reflecting words from our most recent unit.
Also, be sure that you are working on your group projects - you'll have some meeting time on Wednesday to check in; have something to show for this. Here is the resource for the covers of the New Yorker if you're interested in pursuing one of these as your image analysis.

Russian II and Russian I
Please remember what I said today in class about our new warm-up procedures. Study and know your declensions and your verb conjugations. This is an effort to make sure that you learn what you need to learn in order to be fully successful in Russian. Get it done. Ask for help.
Russian II
Today you got your exercise packet on the beginnings of verbs of motion. You should be able to work on the exercises up to the information on пойти which we will discuss next class. Try to do one or two questions from each exercise. The whole packet is due next week, so take this time to try to get something started and ask questions next class if you're confused or unsure.

The presentations of your Russian city projects will be on Tuesday. We will return to the library on Friday to finish the research on the cities. Tonight, I would like for you to try to write your sentences about your city. What is in the city? Что в городе? What does the city have? У города есть что? Who is from the city? Кто из города?
We'll review some of these structures next class as we continue our work moving forward with cases.

- Reading of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn needs to be done by the 8th. You need to be to the end of chapter twenty-two by this date.
- Reading of the excerpt by Oluadah Equiano is also due for the 8th.
- You should be working on your projects nightly - you'll have some time on Thursday to finish up your contracts and begin on your first goal.
- I would like to see your vocabulary bookmarks on Thursday - make sure that you have new words from TAoHF - look at slang and any other words used in a context that you're unsure of.

Tonight is your night to get things settled. Make sure that you have completed your test and your project and that all of these things are ready to turn in next class so that you don't earn any penalties.

Complete your cheat sheets on aspect. Be sure that you have HCB on one side and CB on the other side. Try to simply the rules around choosing the perfective or the imperfective form of the verb. Make sure that this is completed as you will need it for class on Wednesday when we begin working on verbs of motion.

The multiple choice portion of your exam is coming on Wednesday. Based on what you saw today you should have a good idea of what is coming for you tomorrow. Study and prepare.
