5 and 6 May - Off to the Weekend!

AP Language

We're solidly in examination time, so class is a space to work and have time as you need to accomplish your goals. The recording goes over the final projects in a bit more detail and some resources you'll need related to that. Check the unit folder for access to the templates and rubrics for the final projects.

Note that the final day to submit work for Quarter 4 is June 3. After this, only the final exam will be accepted to be scored. As always, please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

English 10

Today's class was our opportunity to complete our study of Japanese art and the poetry styles of haiku and tanka. I love a haiku. I think that the simplicity of their style belies the complexity of their meaning. The smallest things can be the most complex, and it's that paradox which really exists at the center of a lot of Japanese culture. 

If you are missing assignments take this weekend to complete and submit them. I've been contacting parents of people who are in danger for the quarter. With only eight classes left in the year, it's important that you get caught up if you've fallen behind. No work for the quarter will be accepted after 3 June. Exams begin on 3 June and only the final will be scored at that point.

Next week we'll begin with our major text in this unit - Spirited Away. I'm looking forward to sharing this wonderful film with all of you!

25 and 26 April

AP Language

A very low-key class in AP Language to start the week. We started our day with reading, had time to discuss our reading so far and our ideas about the novels, and then time to finish our day as we needed. I hope that you're enjoying your time as you work through the novels - keep meeting your goals as you're reading and thinking.

On Wednesday you'll have your reading SOL. Because of this, Thursday's class is going to be a bit of a review/reflection/recovery day. Right now you should be focusing on reading your books, reflecting on your reading, and completing your tasks related to the novel. There's a bonus assignment unlocked for you to help with the most recent MCQ - complete it if you'd like! 

English 10

Today was the end of our unit on Latin American literature. I hope that you enjoyed spending time with our neighbors to the south. Remember that all of these authors have written much more than what we read in this unit - keep exploring if you read something that you enjoyed. Marquez's novel called One Hundred Years of Solitude is a personal favorite of mine. 

Today's exam will be scored and back to you by the end of the week. Next class is our catch-up day for you to finish your projects, your SOL essays, or any other tasks that may still be out there for the unit. The last unit of the year is next - JAPAN! We'll have a film as the main text in this unit, so lots for us to look forward to as we close the year.

28 and 29 March

AP English Language

Wonderful work today during our seminar on Brent Staples's "Just Walk On By" - I think that our review lately has been a fantastic way for all of you to develop some important frames with which you'll read your novels. Consider ideas like double consciousness, the veil, stereotype threat, and necropolitics.

Next class is going to give you the chance to find these things as you'll have a reading day next class. We'll also take some time to review for the AP Examination and focus on multiple choice testing strategies and ways to focus on working faster AND smarter.

Remember that any missing assignments are due by the end of the day on the 31st. Our final grade for the quarter was today's seminar, so, if you're satisfied with where you are, then you're done! Focus on fourth quarter and read your novels. If you're not pleased, then be sure to see me and get caught up while there's time.

English 10

We had a good day today with Pablo Neruda, though some of you were a bit harsh on some of his poetry. We read a collection of poems, one of them even about a giant tuna fish. I was happy to hear you reading and discussing poetry, and I hope you found a new way to break down and understand poetry.

From there we completed our final task for the quarter - our poetry scavenger hunt. Be sure that you check SIS and see that you have no missing assignments. If it's missing, turn it in! Next class we'll do some reading together and then take time to close out the quarter.

Beginning the Week - Tuesday the 27th

English 10

Today in class we focused on reading to cover pages 117 to 126. This section of the novel is important because it highlights some important conflicts and examples of irony in the text so far. Next class we'll look at another section of the novel to prepare us for the end.

Use your homework time right now to catch up on any missed assignments. Remember that if you're missing an assignment from last week, there are recordings to help you with your submission. If you want to use a freebie or extra credit, please say so in a comment.

Next week we'll be finishing the book. Be sure that you're keeping up with your annotations and vocabulary. We'll have a final assessment at the end of the unit and then our end of the year work. Be sure to stay focused and use class time effectively to not have a lot to do at the end of the year.

AP English Language

Today was our day to work through a full length exam MCQ as a team. Since we were working as a team, you likely worked a bit more slowly than normal. Those of us in class took time at the end of the section to compare and discuss answer choices - especially some questions that were a bit challenging.

Be sure that your group has submitted answers via AP Classroom or a Google Doc on the assignment. All group names should be on the document if submitted there. I would also recommend submitting your answers on AP Classroom to get feedback on your choices. Grades will be posted for the groups soon and we'll review once all the data is in.

Tonight, be sure to work on vocabulary cards and your reading for next class. Today was a bit of a bore because of our focus on MCQs - so next class we'll have some time for arts and crafts, of a sort. Chapters 16, 17, and 18 are a great section of the novel. I'm looking forward to your thoughts.

Beginning Week 30 - 20 April 2021

AP Language

Today was our day to focus on reading quickly and addressing our required task - reading and writing. There was a secondary focus today on teamwork and building stamina as we had two things to complete - an MCQ and FRQ. We'll have a lot of extra credit built in to today's Matchbox. Scores will be uploaded later this week - it'll take time for me to read over the FRQs.

For this afternoon, be sure to complete your reading and annotating in Invisible Man - Chapters 13, 14, and 15. We'll work through the chapters as a team on Thursday. I've unlocked your next MCQ for your independent work. Remember it will lock at 11:45 on Monday. We'll have vocabulary turned in soon - you should hopefully be finding your tenth word soon. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you!

English 10

Today in class we spent our time reading and understanding a key component to the novel - Tiurin's Story. Remember that you can complete the reading questions via the Google Document or the PearDeck slides. I'll be checking them tomorrow for your answers and work. From our reading, you should also be able to find a few vocabulary words.

For tonight, be sure to keep reading. Make it through to page 100 to finish the scene of the men working. Also be sure to take time to check in on any missing assignments like your Illustrated Quotation or the Grammar Test on No Red Ink. These are both major assignments and worth a lot of points. I look forward to seeing you all next class for some more time in the prison and a closer look at some of our themes.

End of the Week - Thursday the 15th

AP Language

It's the end of another week here in Room A132. We focused today on the idea of allusions in Chapters 11 and 12 and how they're being used by Ellison to add a lot of meaning to TIM's process of creating and understanding his identity and role in the world. Today we focused on musical allusions, The Odyssey, and the Bible in these chapters.

Over the weekend, be sure to focus on reading in Invisible Man as well as your MCQ 5. Keep in mind that the MCQ is for accuracy, so failure to complete it will result in a missing score. If you have any missing assignments, get those turned in over the weekend so that I can update your grades.

English 10

Today in class we had a bit of a chill day - it was a day to take our End of Year Grammar Diagnostic on No Red Ink and then have some independent time for working as needed. Over the weekend, you should find time to complete and submit your Interpretive Reading assignment (paragraph and recording) as well as reading in your novel to page 80. In this section of the novel you'll want to pay attention to food and the way that Shukhov works and uses his time.

Next week we'll spend more time in the camp with our prisoners as well as discuss some other End of Year assessments. Keep pushing, we've just got 12 more classes left!

Ending the Week and Quarter - 29 and 30 October

Good Day Students and Families - Today is the final day of the quarter for the classes, and I wanted to post a quick overview for everyone as we move into the Election Day weekend.

All Classes

Note that Dr. Braband has extended the grading window for the first quarter of the year is now November 2nd at 5:00 PM. I will be able to continue accepting late work from quarter one until this date and time. I will also be able to accept resubmissions of work until this time and extra credit cash-in. Note that because of a School Planning Day on Monday, there will be no Office Hours.

Also, I will be participating in the in-person pilot program, so be on the look out for some changes next week! For those of you who are participating as well, I look forward to working with you in-person and welcoming you back to FHS!

AP Language

The only work that I see many people missing from Quarter 1 is the AP Multiple Choice Unit 1 on AP Classroom. Remember that you're getting points for completion of this task. Please log in and submit your work - I've reopened the assignment. All projects should be scored and in the gradebook by the end of the day, today.

Your work from the asynchronous day including reading in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the work with Amy Tan's "Mother Tongue", and vocabulary cards will be scored next week. There is also the lesson posted in NoRedInk on punctuating titles. Please reach out with any questions via email.

Be sure to check in on any assignments that are missing, incomplete, or in need of resubmission. As noted above, I can continue to take work for some time. The work from today's asynchronous day will be scored and collected next week. AP Research

We'll have quick conferences tomorrow - remember to have a rough draft of an Annotated Bibliography entry. This is an important time to be writing and generating content - remember the two step process in crafting an Annotated Bibliography - first go through the sources and consider their importance (remember our lesson in SMARTER annotating), then on your second pass, notice the connections and explore those. 

I hope you have found some use in the Lesson 6 Takeaways Document - I hope that it will guide some of our discussion tomorrow.

Reminders for AP Language and English 10 are the same as those listed below. Remember to submit any missing work this weekend from Unit 1 (since we're moving on) and especially the revised Writing Diagnostic. I'll update grades through the weekend and on Monday based on your submissions.

AP Research

Thank you for a productive day of conferencing based on your source list. I was very happy to see that you were immediately able to apply your findings from your Source List assignment to the further development of your research question. Remember that these sources may serve as models for you in a variety of ways - consider if their work is replicable for you in this course in any way, shape, or form.

Over the weekend you should continue to add to your source list - this should be a continuous process as we keep reading and working. Additionally, it is clear that many of you have found significant and important work which is guiding you. Apply our Lesson 4 work related to the Annotated Bibliography and begin to craft entries now. Remember that this Annotated Bibliography is one of our major assessments in this unit.

Next week we'll meet together to work through the reading of an AP Research paper and become familiar with the rubric used to score the paper. I think that you're ready to see the final product and understand the way in which this work we do now is going to find its way to that final product.

End of Week 6 - Blue Day - 15 October

AP Language

Happy Thursday, all! We had a thorough day reviewing some of our main concepts related to rhetorical analysis, appeals, and situations. I was happy to see the way in which a lot of us have grown as readers and analyzers, even in this quick time we've had to start the year. I'm glad to see that so many of you enjoyed reading James Baldwin - we'll be seeing more of him through the year.

Over the weekend, be sure to complete your NoRedInk Diagnostic - you'll be getting full credit for completion. This will help to guide our grammar work through the year. Also remember that Writing Diagnostic resubmissions are due on Monday. Highlight changes/updates so that I can see your improvements more quickly.

Our next unit will focus on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. We'll be looking at some shorter pieces and essays to begin our work before jumping into the novel, but be sure that you're ready with a copy of the book soon!

English 10

Today in class we had our first workshop on our final project - My Personal Culture. Remember that the goal of this project is to learn more about your cultural background but also to find ways that you're different and have made yourself into an individual. This project is due on 10/26 at the end of the quarter. 

Remember that next week we'll begin our study of graphic novels and our first major book Persepolis. If you didn't get a copy from school and need one, I'll be there to help you from 1-3 on Monday at Fairfax High School.

This weekend is a great weekend to submit any and all missing work from Unit 1. Since we're moving on, I won't be able to take work for much longer. Be sure that anything which says "MISSING" on Google Classroom or SIS is complete and submitted. I'll get it rescored by the end of Monday. If you want a new grade on your essay, do be sure to submit those this weekend so that I can reread them and score them.

Good Day Students and Families - 

Today is a day to get things done which may still be floating over us. I've been hard at work grading this morning and am happy to report that most everything from Week 1 and the summer has been updated in the gradebook. If you see that something is missing, go check Google Classroom - you may have not hit the submit button.

Assignments for today are anything from Week 2 - Especially the Homework Assignment 2. We'll begin to focus on writing skills, so these opening assignments are a good way for me to understand where we are in those skills.

Homework for A Day Students - 6 November - Election Day!

It's Election Day! Remember to remind people you know who are eligible to go and vote! The only way a democracy works is when we all contribute to its success and advancement! Outside of that, here are your other reminders for tonight.

AP English III

Some of you did not have annotations to be checked or vocabulary cards to submit. If this is the case you need to see me tomorrow with that in order for it to be scored. If you are missing the Act III/IV quiz then this should be settled this week as we are closing this unit and moving on to the next.

On that, be sure that you've secured your copy of Beloved by Toni Morrison. I would highly recommend ordering a copy of this book as it is very rich. If you need help with this, let me know. Additionally, as I said today in class, we'll be spending a lot of time talking about the experiences of African American women through this unit. Thus, it would be a good idea to do some research before Thursday. Look at the biographies of Toni Morrison and a few other African American women of your choosing. What do they all have in common?

Lastly, be ready for your presentation on Thursday. You will be expected to present your text, its comment on society, how that commentary is done, and if it is generally effective or not. Someone will also need to relate the argument for the team. Remember that your presentation will fall on Thursday, but the writing on the websites will not be assessed until the weekend - so you'll have time for final changes.

English IV

Today in class we finished reading "Showdown with Big Eva" and worked through the comprehension questions. We also reviewed a bit around the idea of irony as we discussed the story. Next class we'll finish our compare/contrast assignment between Laila and Nora before doing vocabulary. We'll also do a bit of work next class connected to our tests to do corrections. If you haven't taken the test yet, it's important that you do that before Thursday.

Homework for B Day Students - 26 September

AP Seminar

Tonight we are moving forward into our first theme based unit by developing questions around the topic of education. Take the work that we did today in class around topic development and go further. Take at least four lenses and develop questions related to these lenses.

Once you've worked out a question that you like - move forward into the development via research. Be sure to find an adequate source and use that to further refine your question/idea using the second graphic organizer. On Friday you'll be meeting as a team, so it's important to have this work done in order to meet your goals as a group on Friday.

Advanced Russian

We didn't get as far as I would have liked today - but we did get a lot of good speaking and listening done, so that worked out well for us. First, to go further from the speaking and listening today, spend time writing a paragraph in Russian that deals with your plans for the weekend. What are you planning to do this weekend? With whom? Where? Everything we did today while talking is great to set you up for this. You should write anywhere from five to ten sentences.

Next, collaborate with your team. Share a Google Document among your teammates and with me - dump all of your ideas as a team into this document. On Friday you'll meet and determine your topic.

Lastly, if you are working to correct your quiz to earn back points - do so. If you feel as though you really don't understand the One Stem Verb System, then I would complete an exercise. The exercise is on Pages 174-175. There is an article and a list of vocabulary words. Not all stems are there, and some are repeated: your job is to read the article and find your verbs. Organize them around stems - notice how they are used and conjugated in the text. Like Pokemon, gotta catch 'em all!

You'll want to turn in your resubmission work by the beginning of next week!

Russian I

Today we had our quiz on the alphabet as well as some time to work on our Russian city research projects. Next class will be the last day to work on our research before we present next week. For tonight, there are a few things that you should settle:

1. We're coming to the end of this first unit so all work is due. Make sure that you've done your handwriting packet, your name and paragraph about yourself, and any other assignments in PowerSchool. Missing assignments will be marked as a zero on Friday.
2. I'll have your quizzes graded for you next week. You'll be able to make corrections - remember that we'll have an exam on this same information, so it's important to learn all of these letters and sounds.
3. Focus on learning your new vocabulary - the greetings, introductions, and farewells. We'll be working with these words next class as we begin some speaking.

I think that's really it! Stay on your grind everyone - keep moving forward!

Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 9 March 2018

There are only 5 A-Days until the end of Quarter 3! Make sure you're getting things done and working to finish the quarter in a strong and solid position.

English IV

Today in class we got into some very complex pieces of philosophy by John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau - these texts helped us to discuss what it is that makes us who we are. Is it more that we are controlled by who we are or by what happens to us? Is it a question of nature or nurture?

We then discussed how The Creature is able to show this same debate. Class ended with some more reading of The Creature with the De Lacey family as well as his eventual expulsion from their house.

Over the weekend, get focused on your missing assignments or assignments that are scored low you will want to focus on that. We have very little time left to affect and change our grades for the better. The only real work to complete is our Frankenstein project. Be sure that you are engaged and moving toward completion.

Advanced Russian

Today in class we had our unit exams. I will work to get those graded and returned to you by Thursday so that you have time to reassess on any portions that you need to. Over the weekend, you will want to complete your Chapter Previews. Russian II will want to complete a Chapter Preview on Chapter 7 - This chapter focuses on forming plurals in all cases. Russian III will want to focus on Chapter 9 - This chapter focuses on supplemental vocabulary which helps to discuss needs and desires.

Be sure that if there is anything missing from our verbs of motion unit that you have settled that up this weekend. Begin to focus on your new vocabulary in your new chapters.

Russian I

We also took a unit examination today - but for us it was more of a cumulative test on the whole year - so it was much more of a Benchmark Examination than anything else. I will have these back to you next week for any reassessments that you may want to complete.

Over the weekend you have your Chapter Preview on Chapter 3. Focus on your new vocabulary here so that you are able to move forward into the chapter effectively. Additionally, MANY of you are missing project grades and these are really pulling you down. Work to get these grades submitted to me on Monday so that your grade accurately reflects your abilities in class.

Homework for Wednesday, February 28 - B Day - PLC Day

AP English III

There are a lot of things to take care of in advance of class on Friday. Here are your reminders in order of importance of what you need to do.

1. Your research paper outlines are due to me on Friday. You should submit a hard copy. If you submit the outline online, please remember to turn in your rubric. Friday is also the last day to resubmit research paper sourcepacks. Remember to submit your rubric to show that you are ready for the assignment to be reassessed.
2. You have reading due for Friday - Chapters 7 through 9 of Invisible Man. The priority as you read is to complete your vocabulary as you are reading. Annotate. Keep an eye on your motifs. This is a transition section for TIM as he travels to New York and gets acclimated to his new life. It's not all he expects it to be.

Next week we will have a quest on Invisible Man - Prologue through Chapter Nine. In class on Friday we will have time to work together and complete our blogs up to this point. Be sure that you are coming to class on Friday ready to work!

English IV

Many of you were able to take care of resubmitting and correcting your vocabulary quiz today in class. If there are other grades on your progress report that you would like to improve - be sure that you are settling all of that up ASAP. The quarter will be over sooner than you think.

For tonight, make sure that you are thinking about your missing work or any work that needs to be resubmitted. Next class we will see Justine's trial and continue to work on our projects about Frankenstein in popular culture.

Homework for Monday - 2/26/2018 - B Day

AP English III

I hope that you all enjoyed the timeline activity today. I think that we have a good understanding of how much TIM has changed and been affected by this eventful day at the college. Make sure that you continue to consider Dr. Bledsoe as well as TIM's Grandfather moving forward - both of these men are going to continue to have serious effects on him.

For the week we don't have anything due until Friday. On Friday you will be turning in your research outlines as well as completing the reading and annotating of Chapters Seven, Eight and Nine. These chapters take TIM to New York. Look at his first impressions in the city. Pay attention to how he's changing and yet not changing at the same time.

On Wednesday we will have our Timed Writing - it will be a synthesis prompt. We will also do some multiple choice practice to complete the day.

As a warning, next week we will have our first test on Invisible Man - Prologue through Chapter Nine. We will also have vocabulary cards coming due (ten total cards) as well as blog posts for the chapters we have covered.

English IV

Good work today with our reading strategies JAQ and BBB - make sure that you're using these in all of your classes to get through difficult texts with specific purposes. I think that you all did a great job getting through some really dense paragraphs with some complex ideas in them. Remember that you don't have any homework to complete tonight - if you have any missing work or assignments be sure that you are working to get those submitted ASAP.

Homework for the Weekend - 23 February 2018 - A Day

Russian I

Over the weekend you should spend time working on your family projects. You have two things to accomplish. First, locate your assignment on Google Classroom. There you'll find the online Russian keyboard as well as the instructions for the document.

Identify your family members. Write their names - first, middle, and last in the Russian way. Remember that you have to write about four generations.

After you've done this, take time to write a rough draft of one paragraph. Make sure that you use the outline provided.

Turn in this work on Google Classroom or share it with me daniel _ miller @ dpsnc . net (no spaces) so that I can mark this as complete and give you feedback.

Advanced Russian

I will not see many of you on Tuesday because of the ACT testing for Juniors. Because of this - the work discussed here will be reviewed on Thursday. Now that we have finished watching The Irony of Fate we can apply what we have learned about Verbs of Motion to the film. We did that today in class related to Ippolit and Zhenya - over the weekend, write about Nadya.

Use a variety of verbs of motion to write about Nadya. Be sure that you consider where she is when she ends the film and your point of view on the actions as you write.

Russian III students should use verbs of motion with prefixes as an extra practice - you may also want to activate your hypothetical and conditional mood for extra review of that too.

We will have our unit exam after next week. Please make sure that if you have any missing work or work to be resubmitted that you have handled this over the weekend.

English IV

You all did a great job today working through your vocabulary quizzes as well as our reading of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I know that the text is difficult, but that is why it is important to work with it. Make sure that you focus on what you understand and use that to make sense of the parts you don't quite understand.

Over the weekend you don't have any homework to complete for me. If you have missed something, it is important that you get that done over the weekend!

Homework for the Weekend - B Day - 16 February

English IV

Today you all received your progress reports and for some of you I also handed you an assignment that is missing and needs to be made up. If you have zeroes on your progress report, please make sure that you are taking the weekend to get caught up. We will continue working through Frankenstein next week - including the beginning of our film study as well as our independent projects.

AP English III

Very good work today getting into the beginnings of Invisible Man. There's so much to talk about with this book that we're only really hitting the major points. Make sure that after every class you are going back and checking on any questions that you may have had from your reading and thinking on your own.

For the weekend you have Chapter Two to read and annotate. Remember that we have a few standing assignments as we are going through the book as well. You and your groupmates should make sure to complete the post on Chapter Two for your blog as well. Then there's also the vocabulary card for Chapter Two.

This chapter is strange and disturbing because of the story that Jim Trueblood tells. Be sure to pay attention to it and analyze it on a symbolic level. There's a lot going on and we will delve into it on Tuesday in class. Be sure to generate questions for me to enrich our conversation.

Lastly, make sure that you have submitted/shared your sourcepacks by the end of the day today.

Homework for the Weekend - 25 January 2016 - B Day

English IV

A few of you were absent today for the test that we took on Twelfth Night. Be sure that you see me as soon as possible to get this made-up. You especially want to do it now while the information about what we've studied is still fresh in your head.

For the weekend there's not any real homework. If you have a chance, talk to people about Frankenstein. See what they already know or think about it. We'll start studying this text on Monday!

AP English III

I am so proud of the amazing level of analysis that you all brought to the Alabama Clergy's letter. You all found the holes in the argument and were able to see how King was immediately responding to them. We then went to the computer lab to do work on allusions, which will help us next class.

For the weekend you have a few things to do:

1. Reread Dr. King's "Letter from a Birmingham City Jail" and annotate the heck out of it. Now you know what he's doing on a macro level, so start to find how it happens on the micro level.
2. I gave you two sample SYNTHESIS essays. These are our next type of timed writing. Read over the essays and try to determine the task. What's the question? What do you have to do?
3. If you are missing anything, you will see zeroes in PowerSchool. Take the time that you have this weekend to get those things turned in ASAP. Remember, you have to get away from bad habits if you're going to be successful this quarter!

Snow Day Number 3 - 17 January

I posted yesterday's post, and then DPS cancelled school about twelve minutes later. I think that's the fastest cancellation ever.

See the post below about what you need to do before our next classes. A special note to Russian I, II, and III. If you see a zero for the viewing guide assignment for The Irony of Fate it means that I do not have an assignment from you. When we return to school you will only have one day to turn in a resubmission. It may be a good day to watch the film and make up the time when you were doing something else in class. We will discuss expectations when you are with a substitute at our next class as well.

Homework for A Day Students - 24 October 2017

Russian I

Tonight you should spend time reviewing the information in your textbooks on pages 38 and 39 about subject pronouns. How are subject pronouns different from possessive pronouns? How are they used in sentences?

Also, please find the list of people you would meet in Russia. We'll be doing an activity next class around these people and how to talk about them. Make sure you list at least ten people and identify if you would speak with them formally or informally.

Advanced Russian

II - At the end of the chapter find exercise number three. This is in two parts - A and Б. Look over the sentences and select five from group A and five from group Б. As you look at the sentences, identify the verbs and aspect used in each sentence. Then, write your answers to the questions.
