Week 15 - The End of 2020

Good day all around today everyone! I was happy to see a lot of forward movement with our website task and to see the amazing amount of collaboration to improve your work and make each other better. Keep in mind that finishing this task is going to be our key focus for this week. Be sure that you take time to post your materials. If you need additional help, let me know. English 10

Today we took time to read and analyze an important chapter for us as we consider how people and relationships change over time. Your PD Takeaways on Google Classroom have your notes. There are also the slides posted for the questions and key panels for analysis. In "The Horse" we looked at Marji and her mother as well as the irony at play in their developing relationship. 

From there, we took time at the end to work on and submit projects. Remember that projects need to be turned in this week. If you've finished your project, then you should watch the movie for Persepolis. Everything is posted for you in Google Classroom under Classwork.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 10 May

AP English III

For those of you who were away taking the AP US History Examination this morning, I wish you nothing but the best. I hope that your DBQ was clear and that you were able to bring some of your own information to the forefront. Here are your reminders for the weekend:

1. Motif Projects - Be sure that you have completed your 1Q1P, motif charts, and illustration of the quotation. I'll accept these on Monday and Tuesday if you were not in class today.
2. Steinbeck Nominations - You'll have one more section of class to work on this. Remember that there is the poster and the presentation. Know what you'll be arguing about your nominee to give them the best chance of winning.
3. Exam Needs Assessment - Next class we will be doing our full AP Exam review. Please go to Google Classroom and complete the form so that I can tailor our review to be the most helpful.

Your examination will be on Wednesday morning. Be at the church on time. I'll be there to wish you all the best and give you any last words before you go in and do the dance!

English IV

Today in class we looked at a different type of text and a different type of question. Remember that you'll see a few different types of texts on your NCFE. That's why we've read so many different types of things. Be ready by reviewing strategies for each type of text/question. From there it was independent working time for novels, study guides, or book projects before we finished up with our book and vocabulary quiz.

For this weekend it would be a good idea for you to complete your brainstorming related to your essay. Remember that you are selecting a major character from your book and talking about the type of person the character is and comparing the character to yourself. This is our key work to finish the year - so be sure that you're ready to work on this over the next few classes!

Homework for Monday - A Day - 25 February

AP English III

Today we began to scratch the surface of Dr. King's article by focusing our discussion on his larger context and his use of allusions in the text. Next class we'll begin to formalize his argument as we compare and contrast his text with the others in this unit. Begin to draw connections now so that you're prepared for that conversation.

Tonight you should read what may be our last text of this unit - Zora Neale Hurston's "How It Feels To Be Colored Me". This text is available in 50 Essays as well as at this link. Next class we will be doing some more multiple choice practice. Be ready for that!

Outside of your reading, be sure that you are pulling together your research for your Synthesis Packs. These will be assessed next week and they are a major grade. Follow the instructions and use the template documents in Google Classroom. Additionally, all Transcendentalist Projects should be submitted to Google Classroom. I'll read and return rubrics to you later this week.

This unit will be ending next week and we'll be going on to The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Be sure that you have secured your copy of the text.

English IV

Today in class we completed our Poetry Unit test in which I asked you several questions about the different poems that we've studied and then to write a paragraph to show your skills in writing and reading poetry. I'll have this work graded and returned to you by the end of the week.

Next class we'll begin with our literature circles. Each of us will be reading a different book (some in small groups) in order to work on setting goals, accomplishing them, and studying a novel for your own enjoyment. Be ready for things in class to be a bit different as we move forward.

Be sure that if you have anything missing from this unit that it is complete by the end of the week!

Homework for the Weekend - Valentine's Day - B Day

AP Seminar

You did it! Achievement unlocked! You presented your TMPOD and we are moving on to our next task. I am very proud of the work that you all did today and the way that you all rose to the occasion. I have released the stimulus pack to you through Digital Portfolio. We will start working through this on Monday as we begin Performance Task 2. I would recommend reviewing the documents this weekend, considering any connections you may see between them, and then being ready for some focused study of these documents over the next few classes.

Don't forget to complete the Week 2 Reflection as well as submit your IRR to Digital Portfolio this weekend.

Advanced Russian

This weekend we should all be focused on project work and reviewing verbs of motion that may have been challenging to us on the quiz today. On Google Classroom you'll see slides for today which include the example slide for your project. Use this as an example of what to do as you are working.

The other project is our poetry memorization - this should be complete on Monday or Wednesday. Come in and present your poem to me aloud. If it's not good enough, I'll invite you to return.

Russian III Students need to complete reading in your textbook - pages 419 to 421 review the conditional and hypothetical in Russian. Review these pages and take notes so that we can review the concept on Monday. This is the last grammar concept before our Unit 10 examination.

Russian I

Today in class we did a lot of great writing and speaking to focus on the different cases, their sounds, and their jobs. We reviewed our film and discussed Nadya's actions through the film. From there, we spent time with our laptops working through our projects about ourselves.

This weekend you should finish the draft of your slides and writing. There should be an answer for each slide and there should be a photo. By the end of the project you should have used all six cases, a variety of verbs, and practiced with a lot of your Russian language skills. I'm available all week to review your work with you.

There are also our poem projects. Have your four lines memorized so that you can get your easy A on this assignment. You can come to me at any point next week to perform your poem.

Homework for the Weekend - B Day - 16 November

AP Seminar

Today in class we worked hard to finish our IWA Planning Document. I'll be assessing these over the weekend. Make sure that it is shared to me (daniel _ miller @ dpsnc (dot) net) or turned in on Google Classroom. If you didn't finish in class, you have the rest of the day to complete your work. Be sure it's ready for me tomorrow morning.

After this, it was on to the IWA. On Google Classroom you'll find the slides from our analysis of the rubric as well as the sample IWAs and scoring commentary. I think that it's important for you to take a look at these documents as we begin moving into the drafting phase.

For the weekend, be sure that you are keeping your final task in mind. Keep researching, keep finding sources, but start writing too. Now that you've seen some samples, you should have an idea of what you need to submit.

Advanced Russian

The main task this weekend is working on the essay and visual. We'll also take a quick look at vocabulary related to time expressions on Tuesday as well - be sure that you're studying your new words related to your new grammar. You should know days of the week, words related to time, months, and prepositions. It'll be connected to what you're learning, so be ready.

Russian III students should focus on writing this weekend. We have the structures for the argument and the topic sentences. Keep moving if you can. Structure your essay, build your title page, abstract page (already done) and then section off your paper. Don't forget to include your references.

Russian II students should focus on those visuals this weekend. What's the visual? How does it connect to the paper? What's being shown? Use your language and reflect on aspect as you are writing. Put the visuals in the context of your group's essay topic.

All of this will come together for our big project grades this quarter. We'll be using the visual and the paper as a rehashing of our comic strip assignment.

Russian I

Today we focused our class completely on verb conjugation for regular first and second conjugation verbs before we moved on to a bit of Doctor Zhivago to end our class. At this point you should know several things in Russian including:

• identifying part of speech in Russian
• identifying gender for nouns
• stating/talking about ownership in Russian
• identifying verb conjugation pattern (first or second)
• conjugating verbs based on pattern (first or second)

To finish our study of regular verb conjugation, we have the exercises I gave you today. These are for practice and will not be checked. If you would like to use them to review with me, that's a great idea. One of the exercises is available for extra credit on your quiz. Complete these, especially if you've been struggling to learn your conjugations. If you would like to come in next week to review, I am available for that.

Remember that on the 27th you will have a quiz on verb conjugation - you'll probably see some other questions on there too related to other skills. Review and study and ask for any help that you may need.

Homework for A Day Students - 6 November - Election Day!

It's Election Day! Remember to remind people you know who are eligible to go and vote! The only way a democracy works is when we all contribute to its success and advancement! Outside of that, here are your other reminders for tonight.

AP English III

Some of you did not have annotations to be checked or vocabulary cards to submit. If this is the case you need to see me tomorrow with that in order for it to be scored. If you are missing the Act III/IV quiz then this should be settled this week as we are closing this unit and moving on to the next.

On that, be sure that you've secured your copy of Beloved by Toni Morrison. I would highly recommend ordering a copy of this book as it is very rich. If you need help with this, let me know. Additionally, as I said today in class, we'll be spending a lot of time talking about the experiences of African American women through this unit. Thus, it would be a good idea to do some research before Thursday. Look at the biographies of Toni Morrison and a few other African American women of your choosing. What do they all have in common?

Lastly, be ready for your presentation on Thursday. You will be expected to present your text, its comment on society, how that commentary is done, and if it is generally effective or not. Someone will also need to relate the argument for the team. Remember that your presentation will fall on Thursday, but the writing on the websites will not be assessed until the weekend - so you'll have time for final changes.

English IV

Today in class we finished reading "Showdown with Big Eva" and worked through the comprehension questions. We also reviewed a bit around the idea of irony as we discussed the story. Next class we'll finish our compare/contrast assignment between Laila and Nora before doing vocabulary. We'll also do a bit of work next class connected to our tests to do corrections. If you haven't taken the test yet, it's important that you do that before Thursday.

Homework for the Weekend - 19 October 2018

English IV

Be sure that over the weekend you take a look at your scores on PowerSchool on the most recent assignment - if you have an A on the assignment then you are ready to move on to your final drafts. If you have anything less, then you are missing big pieces of your "This I Believe" Paper and need to finish those ideas.

We'll try to finalize these papers next week so that we have our big final grades in before the end of the quarter.

AP English III

Today was a crazy day since we didn't have a lot of time. Hopefully the slides on Google Classroom will help make sense of what we've done. Here are your reminders about what to consider over the weekend:

1. Act III will be discussed on Tuesday. Remember that this is a great section for you to consider around social commentary - look at power and the justice system in Act III. There's a lot of commentary to consider.
2. Essay revisions are important! A lot of you made a lot of great strides today and I think that you understand what you have to do a lot better now than you did before. Keep pushing, keep collaborating, and keep asking for feedback. Remember that final revisions are due on Thursday. You must turn in your first essay with your new one.
3. You should also be working on a draft of your rhetorical analysis for your projects. With the work we did last class you know how to organize and set up your approach to the essay. Look over your text and focus on how the author is making the point to you. Explain that as you explain elements of the text.

Homework for A-Day Classes

Phew - It sure is good to be getting back to normal. Here are the announcements for today. Be aware of what's going on and prepare for what we have ahead!

AP English III

Ms. Coco and I ended up changing the homework ever so slightly for you since it makes more sense for us to change things. The reading of Oluadah Equiano's "Narrative" will not be done until later in this unit, we'll be using it more as a bridge piece to Beloved instead.

For Wednesday, prepare for your quiz on Acts I and II of The Crucible. Remember that the multiple choice section will be open book, but the quotation identifications and the short answer will be closed book. You'll also be getting back your essays and timed writings on Wednesday as we discuss revisions and the process moving forward.

Thursday is our field trip - dress for the theatre. No athletic attire will be accepted as attire appropriate for the theatre. Jeans are acceptable. Shorts are acceptable. But please, no athletic shorts.

Friday we'll be discussing the first half of Denisovich. Focus on your characters and the front cover annotations. Remember that these characters are not actual people but more the amalgamation of many people that Solzhenitsyn was in a prison camp for many years and that these people are based on whom he met while he was there. We'll also be discussing Zinn on Friday.

Lastly, keep working on your group project. By the end of this week you should have thoroughly analyzed your chosen text for its social commentary and the way that it makes that commentary clear to you.

English IV

Over the long weekend I had a chance to look at your rough drafts online. Some of you have really complete drafts and you've settled up your "This I Believe" essay. In this case you received either twenty or nineteen points. Others of you need to keep writing, probably because you weren't here for all of the days at the beginning of the unit. If this is the case then you have fifteen or sixteen points.

If you need to spend time revising or finishing, please do so. We'll be submitting final drafts soon to finish Quarter 1 - be aware of this deadline!

Homework for the Weekend - B Day - 8 February 2018

AP English III

Today we did a lot of really good thinking and reflecting related to the concepts of "the veil" and "double consciousness" - these understandings will lead to a lot of benefits as we move through Invisible Man for the rest of the unit. I look forward to looking at your takeaways and self-reflections.

For the weekend you should all be focused on your synthesis sourcepack assignment related to your research papers. If you go to Google Classroom you will find template documents which you can use and edit to create your own sourcepack. You should actively use SIRS or other online resources to help you compile and create your documents. It is completely possible that you can submit this early and have this part of the research paper finished.

Otherwise, make sure that you are ready for Monday with a copy of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (there will be some in class for you to check out if you need to). Wednesday we will do our first synthesis timed writing. Friday I'll be collecting your synthesis source packs. Be sure that you use this weekend to get prepared for the week ahead!

We will begin reading the actual text of Frankenstein next class after we finish our presentations. Make sure that you have communicated with your group to complete all of the questions, import images, and complete your citations for your information. If you need to finish your project at all, be sure that it is finished this weekend.

Good work today analyzing Gothic elements and working through an episode of The Simpsons for a view of Gothic literature in a bit of a fun way. Next class we will start wrapping up this introduction unit before we go on to reading and studying Frankenstein. Also next class will be our last chance to go through our projects before we present them. Projects should be complete next class.

AP English III

There are a few things that you should be working on as we move through to next class - here are your specific reminders below.

• Research Papers - You have access to the Synthesis Sourcepack documents via Google Classroom. Alter the templates so that you are going through your question, your sources and documents, and your context for your issue. Use SIRS or other resources to collect and organize your documents. This is a useful assignment and should be an easy A for all of you.
• Reading - I feel as though our conversation on Baldwin's "Notes of a Native Son" could have been richer had more of you thoroughly read it. We will continue to look at the piece next class as well as the poems. Be sure that you have thoroughly read and analyzed it using our discussion today as a jumping off point to the text and understanding Baldwin's larger points.
• Upcoming - Next week we will begin reading Invisible Man as well having our first Synthesis timed writing. Please have a copy of the text and be ready for your timed writing.

9 January - B Day - And a good day was had by all...

AP English III

Way to go on completing your midterm examination today. I will have scores for the multiple choice put in likely today or tomorrow and the essay scores will go in as soon as they are all prepared. You will receive a grade for completing both portions of the midterm, separately.

For tonight, you have some reading and writing to attend to. In terms of your reading, spend your time with Emerson's "The Over Soul". As you read you will want to find different elements depending on your class period.

3B Students should focus on finding elements of Transcendental philosophy in the text as well as deriving questions for our large class seminar. 4B Students have not yet had the lesson on Transcendental philosophy, so you should be looking at areas of the text related to truth and reality as Emerson defines them. Remember that you should thoroughly read and annotate about half of the piece (to approximately paragraph twenty).

For your writing, there's your group synthesis assignment on The Great Gatsby. For this assignment you are working collaboratively in Google Classroom with your peers to present a theme shared across several excerpts of text. Be sure to review the instructions on Google Classroom for these details.

English IV

If you did not submit your humor essay today, then it will need to be done by Thursday. If not, we will grade what you have. This is a good time for you to start looking over your notes on Twelfth Night since we will quickly finish the play and move on to our final test on the play soon.

Homework for English Students - B Day - 3 January

With the one-hour early release the classes for AP are a bit off from each other. We'll be caught up by the end of next week again.

AP English III

Next class you will have your AP English Language and Composition Midterm Exam. You can't really study for it other than to review any devices that we've studied this year as well as to look at your notes around the different timed writings we have done. You will have twenty eight multiple choice questions and one essay.

The other assignment that is shared for both classes is the work on our Gatsby Synthesis assignment. In this assignment you should be working in the same document as the rest of your group. As a group you have determined a theme that is shared among all of the texts. This is stated in a shared introduction. Then, each person should import one of their texts from their annotated bibliography with annotations. This should be paired with explanation and analysis that shows how the text develops the shared theme. There should be transitions to the next person's text. At the end, there is a shared group conclusion. This assignment is due on Tuesday. You'll receive group and individual grades for this work.

3B - Since you all had a full class today you should begin to read and annotate "The Over Soul" by Ralph Waldo Emerson for homework. We'll begin to work through this piece on Tuesday of next week. Remember, he's defining a concept. Stay focused on seeing how he explains what exactly the OverSoul is.

4B - Since you all only spent thirty minutes with us we did not have time to begin the unit. I will give you Emerson to read after the midterm on Friday.

Today, we had a pretty productive class despite the excitement of the shortened day. We began our reading of Twelfth Night, Act III and then made some more progress on our short writing assignment comparing Twelfth Night to She's the Man. Before next class, spend some time planning out your essay so before the end of next period you have a workable draft to submit for feedback. This is the last significant assignment of this semester, so make sure you are doing well with it! Have a good day, and see you soon!

Winter Break Reminders!

English IV

Today, we did much of the same work as your counterparts in 2A. We finished watching She's the Man and completed our viewing guides that accompanied the film. After a discussion of the similarities between the film and Twelfth Night, we began working on a short writing assignment. When we return from break, this writing assignment will be our primary focus as we get back into Twelfth Night. Have a wonderful break, have fun, and make good decisions. We'll see you in 2018!

AP English III

Today, we had a couple of great classes engaging with William Buckley, Jr.'s essay, "Why Don't We Complain?." Overall, Mr. Miller and I were very impressed with how thoughtful each of you were in engaging with a complicated topic. We also went over some Rules For Good Writing and connected some overall threads from the entire semester. Over the break, you are tasked with completing the first part of the annotated bibliography assignment on Google Classroom. Start looking at that sometime this weekend, but don't worry about submitting anything until December 28th. Have a wonderful break, have fun, and make good decisions. We'll see you in 2018!

Homework for Russian Students - Winter Break Edition

With the completion of your exams today in class we can say that you have made it. Вы все дошли до конца! Here is what you need to make sure that you are doing over break to make sure that you're ready to come back and finish the quarter/semester strong.

Russian III - Over break you should read the excerpt from Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Don't spend your time looking up every single word, but focus on learning what seem to be the most important words in the sentences or paragraphs in order to understand the gist or general meaning of the sentence/paragraph. This is also a chance for you to see how much Russian you can understand and how much grammar you see that you know.

You also will need to complete your Chapter Preview of Chapter 10 - we're skipping 9 and will come back to it later. This chapter looks at verbs of motion with prefixes. You may find it helpful to review non-prefixed verbs of motion too (Chapter 6).

Russian II - You also have the Solzhenitsyn reading to complete. Your Chapter Preview will focus on Chapter 6 - verbs of motion without prefixes. Make sure that you go through the topics and do some preliminary studying so that you are ready for this unit.

You may also want to do some final studying to prepare for any reassessments you want to do to close out the quarter/semester.

Russian I - You will need to spend time looking at the second half of Chapter One where we will learn about the last three cases in Russian (genitive, dative, instrumental). This is pages thirty-three to forty-one. You may also want to review other parts of Chapter One including verb conjugation and the other cases too. You can also continue to work on your projects over Winter Break. I placed grades in PowerSchool today for your first check-in on that project and if you had work on Google Classroom - I left you comments where I could. Some of you will need to import work on Google Classroom and let me know to update your grades.

Lastly, you should continue to study and work with your vocabulary from Chapter One. We will finish this unit very soon and you will have the complete Chapter One exam quickly once the quarter ends.

You may also want to do some final studying to prepare for any reassessments you want to do to close out the quarter/semester.

Homework for A Day Students - 20 September

English IV

Remember that on Friday you will be finishing and submitting your drafts to be scored. Take some time before Friday, if you haven't already done so, and log in to your draft on Google Classroom in order to see the comments you've been given by Mr. Bernhard. Try to address these comments before Friday so that you can do some final checking on Friday and then print your draft.

Advanced Russian

You have been given the new vocabulary for Chapter Four - focus on the nouns and adjectives. As you study and review these vocabulary words, try to work with them in different cases. If you need a refresher on your case declensions for nouns and adjectives, check out this really great online resource. You can follow each link for work on each case.

Russian I

Today you were given some new vocabulary words as well related to greetings, introductions, and farewells. Start to study and learn this vocabulary. Also, if you haven't turned in the handwriting packet or the name project, you have these things to complete too.

Russian Students - Keep in mind that if you would like to redo the quiz you took today that you can. You should study and prepare so that you do better next time!

Homework for B-Day Students: 19 September 2017

English IV

Keep in mind that on Google Classroom you now have drafts of your essays as well as feedback from Mr. Bernhard as to how to develop your ideas in to full drafts. Before Monday of next week make sure that you address these comments so that you can quickly revise and print your draft to turn it in to us.

AP English III

On Thursday we will have our first timed writing opportunity and it will be an argumentative prompt. To prepare for this complete the assignment on Google Classroom. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Go to http://classroom.google.com. Login using your DPSNC credentials which are first-last@dpsnc.net and the password is your computer network password.
2. Enroll in our class. 3B is 0xpab07. 4B is 69gnon6.
3. Once you enroll you'll see the Quick Argumentative Outline Assignment. Create a Google Doc, give your argument on the prompt, at least one topic with evidence and explanation, and a clear refutation with evidence and explanation.
4. Turn in the assignment when you're done.

Additionally, bring your copies of In Cold Blood on Thursday if you would like a new grade for annotations on the text. If you have any resubmissions to turn in, those should come in too.

Remember that you will have a rough draft workshop on Wednesday, not Monday. This is a change.

Homework for A-Day Students - 18 September 2017

English IV

Good work today on your characters everyone. Next class we should have a chance to finish up the first portion of the Character Project and continue reading more of The Canterbury Tales. For tonight, it would be most important for you to revise and check-in on your essays. Mr. Bernhard went through your work on Google Classroom and left comments for you all. Go in and revise your essays to address those comments. We will print and submit drafts on Friday - so it's important that you finish these revisions before that.

Advanced Russian

Next class you will have a quiz on the One Stem Verb System. You will be expected to know:

• how certain stems operate.
• how to tell stems from each other.
• how truncation and addition function in past and non-past forms.
• how mutations are triggered.
• how to transcribe infinitives, non-past, and past tense forms.

Hopefully our workshop in class today was helpful in addressing these areas. You should work with the verb handout I gave you as well as the textbook in order to discover more about stems.

Additionally, continue to review our work on cases as they are paired with verbs. Complete exercise 7A, numbers 1-10. Read and analyze the sentence, then change the verb and case in order to make a synonymous sentence. We'll review this work on Wednesday, after the quiz.

Russian I

You also have a quiz next week that will focus on your knowledge of the Russian alphabet and handwriting. You should know:

• the sounds that each letter makes.
• the shape of the letter in print and in handwriting.
• the cognate vocabulary from English.

On the quiz you will be asked to listen to Russian and write what you hear, to write words given to you in print, and to explain what cognates mean. Study and be ready!

Also, keep in mind that handwriting packets and name projects must be turned in on Wednesday or they will become zeroes.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 14 September 2017

Russian I

Over the weekend you should be focused on finishing your handwriting packets for the alphabet if you haven't already turned that in and received a grade. If you have a grade then you can work on revising your work for a new grade if you would like.

Advanced Russian 

Over the weekend you should be focused on the reading passage at the beginning of Chapter Four; it's found on page 143. As you read determine the main idea of each paragraph. Find all of the verbs that you can. If the verb is not already in its infinitive form, then derive the infinitive based on your knowledge of stems and conjugations.

Russian Students - Don't forget that you will have your first quiz of the year on the 20th.

English IV

If you have not completed your first draft of your "The Me You Don't See" essays then spend time this weekend to have those completed. You'll be getting feedback this weekend as we begin to turn these into final drafts across the next week.
