Homework for A-Day Students: 19 February

AP English III

First, there are some big changes to your unit plan outline to be aware of. First, I completely messed up your project reflection timetable. By Monday the 25th you should have seven small daily reflections and the overall reflection completed. All of this work is submitted to me via Google Docs. I appreciate the fact that I have already received some work from you! The first journal should focus on how you've changed your life for this project and why. Beyond that, the other daily journals should just focus on your process. Additionally, the next part of the research project that will be collected is the synthesis pack - this is where you'll codify your question and pull together some of your research. We'll work on this in class on Thursday.

There is no reading for Thursday, I want you all rested and ready for your ACT. There are vocabulary cards due for Thursday. On Thursday, we'll be doing some test related skills and then working on our research papers and the synthesis prompt. Continue to revise your research question and argument as you continue to find important source material.

For Monday, we'll be working through Dr. Martin Luther King's "Letter from a Birmingham City Jail" - this text is located in 50 Essays as well as at this link. The text is very long. It would be a good idea to divide it over the weekend.

English IV

Today in class we read the final four poems that we will see on our poetry examination next week. At this point we have read several poems and we've continued to focus on many of the same skills of determining vocabulary, focusing on figurative language, and then looking at the details which lead up to the theme. All of this is the key work to do on the NCFE at the end of the year too!

Tonight everyone who hasn't finished the TP-CASTT for their individual poems really needs to. We're going to move on to writing our essays and this first step is necessary.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day Edition - 8 December

Advanced Russian

We have a quiz on Monday which will focus on the new grammar and vocabulary in the unit.  Here are some reminders for what to study over the weekend:

Russian II - numbers (spelling and counting rules), time expressions and prepositions with time
Russian III - forming imperatives in Russian from verbs
Russian IV - forming superlatives and comparisons in Russian from adjectives

Additionally, you have your writing assignments.  I was happy to see so many of you working diligently in the lab today.  These projects will be collected on Friday.  We will have a bit of time in class on Monday and Wednesday to keep working.  We will also be going on to the next piece of these chapters on Monday.

Russian I

You will have a grammar quiz on Wednesday which will focus on the three cases (Nominative, Accusative and Prepositional) as well as verb conjugation.  Make sure that you use the exercises that we have now completed to prepare.  We will play a lot of review games on Monday to prepare us for the quiz.  We'll also get back to Zhivago.  Please be actively studying and reviewing this weekend.

English II

Over the weekend you have your writing to complete about your personal hero.  Make sure to write a one-paragraph response which uses a topic sentence, clear example, explanation of the example and a brief conclusion.  Your writing should reflect what you know now about effective writing.

Also, our essays will be due next week.  For those of you who finished today, we'll be looking at draft workshops next week for you.  For those of you who have yet to finish, please work with me outside of class to get this done.

Homework for the Weekend: 26 February 2016 - A Day

English II

We had a pretty great day today in class discussing Chapters Two and Three.  Next class we will have a bit of a catch-up day to work on our in-class essays, our tests, and to finish projects with a late penalty for anyone who needs to.

Remember that you need to read Chapters Four and Five for Thursday's class.  Make sure that you fill out your detail grabber for these chapters.  We're almost halfway done with the book!

Don't forget that I'll take projects today with no late penalty.  Just email it in.

Russian I

This weekend for homework I want you to spend time working with the three tables that we have made for Russian grammar.  You have your case table, your pronoun table, and your possessive pronoun table.  Use these to complete exercises 15 and 16 in Chapter Two.  They're located on pages 88 and 89.  Please do not just fill in the blanks but go through and rewrite the sentences with your answers filled in.

You will be having a quiz on this information on Monday the 7th.  Study and learn!

Russian II/III

This weekend you have a few things to settle as well.  You will have your unit exam on Monday the 7th.  We will have next week to review.  Make sure that for Tuesday's class you have:

  1. Rewritten your journal entry to correct mistakes.
  2. Done research on your selected Moscow metro station.  Remember that you can pick a station on the ring line or within the ring.  Use www.metro.ru for research in Russian.  Wikipedia is also good.  You can find a lot about these stations.
  3. Make sure that you've gone through the reading and dialogues for your chapter.  You should be able to read, translate and discuss the dialogue and the reading as well as answer questions.
With that - I hope you all enjoy the weekend.  I'm off to work all weekend.

Homework for A Day Students - Weekend Edition - 19 November

Happy Thursday everyone!  Here are your reminders for the weekend -

Russian I, II, and III

We will be reassessing on standards from the previous quiz on Monday.  Make sure that you are reviewing and preparing to earn back points and show mastery of concepts. Russian I Students - Focus on your cases, possessive pronouns, and your vocabulary in chapter one, especially the nouns.  Russian II Students - Focus on your counting rules and the spelling of your numbers.  Russian III Students - Focus on your use of modals as well as vocabulary in chapter nine.

Russian II/III

Other than preparing for your reassessment on Monday I would like for you to complete your journal writing this weekend.  The phrase for the week is "кому/чему не удалось" meaning "it didn't work out for whom/what".  Remember that this phrase uses the dative case for the person/thing it didn't work out for.  Think about this as you use this phrase.

Russian I

You have your reassessment to prepare for this weekend.  Additionally, you can spend some time working on your family writing.  Next class we'll likely get started on our next case - the accusative case, so be ready for that excitement!

English II

You all have your extra credit assignment to work on over the weekend and on through Thanksgiving break.  Remember that the assignment can be turned in early or not at all since it's for extra credit.

Your required work for the weekend is to finish your project - the personal narratives focusing on a moment in your life.  On Monday we'll have our presentations of the projects, finish discussing "The Passport" chapter and then likely work on the film.

Friday, November 6, 2015

Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 6 November

English II

We had our exam on the first half of Persepolis today and began our in-depth study of the film.  I enjoyed the fact that so many of you noticed so many things about the adaptation of the book to the film.  Make sure that you've selected one element from question one and that you've written down one clear detail from our study of the film today as well as your opinion of the detail.

We'll work more on this as we continue to watch the film.  Make sure that you put in some work on the personal narrative project this weekend.  Many of you are off to a good start - it may be a good idea to see us with a draft of your project for some comments.

Russian III/II

You have your journals to complete this weekend as well as a second quiz on Thursday.  I would like for those of you who need to be reassessed from the first quiz to settle that before quiz number two - that makes everything easier for all of us.

With your journals - don't forget our phrase of the week:  не откладывай на завтра то, что можно сделать сегодня.  A good reminder for all of us, all the time.  II's - I want to see you using your time expressions as they work well with this idea.  Make sure to write out all of your numbers.  III's - use modal expressions and talk about what you need and/or need to do.  I'll be collecting all journals on Tuesday.  (G/SC/V/CU/C)

Russian I

There was a lot of good writing going on today in class and we didn't get to our game - things to get to on Tuesday.  For the weekend, focus on your writing and your notes from the writing workshop.  From what I saw there were two big areas:  verb conjugation and preposition usage (in Durham/in school/in Alaska/in Russia) that were throwing off a lot of you.  Remember to use the model expressions and my notes as you revise and rewrite.

Additionally you have your practice exercises.  These aren't for a grade, but they're good reinforcement and will help you learn your skills.  We'll likely look at a few of these on Tuesday as part of our review.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day Students - 16 October

It's been a long week, but we made it to the end yet again.  Here is your homework for the weekend.

Russian II/III

You have your new phrase this week for your journals which is:

вольный как птица

Remember that as you use this phrase the adjective will change to refer to the thing/person/group which is free as a bird - so make sure to think about your adjective rules and declensions if those are triggered.  I will be looking for journals from everyone in class on Tuesday, both your first and second entry for the quarter - be sure that those are settled.

In addition, you'll have your verb exam on Thursday.  Study and prepare - I've been seeing clear growth as we've been working in class.  Make sure that you are settling your misconceptions to get things learned, for real this time!

Russian I

This weekend I want you to talk about the things and people you have in your house.  You should make a list of anywhere from ten to fifteen things and create complete sentences which work to express your possession (or someone else's possession) over the item.  Review your gender rules as well as your possessive pronouns; there will be an exam soon!

Don't forget too that we have a song to learn - here's the video to the song.

Practice your reading and your speaking with the song.  Make yourself an expert.

English II

This weekend you have two chapters of Persepolis to read "The Bicycle" and "The Water Cell" - as you read continue to take note of new vocabulary and add to your notes about the main characters.  What do we continue to learn about the Satrapi family?  The handouts are yours, so feel free to make notes in the packet.  Remember that your homework is to read, so you know what may happen when you have reading homework...hint...hint...

Homework for the Weekend - A Day Students - 10/3/2015

Sorry for not getting this up before now; I didn't realized that I'd forgotten.  Here are your reminders:

Students of Russian/Дорогие мои студенты русского языка!

I wanted to post a few things for you to use as you are writing your journals (Russian II/III) and working on your grammar homework and preparing for your first major quiz (Russian I).  First for II/III -

  • Your homework this weekend is one double-spaced page in your journal using the phrase "Ни пуха, ни пера! К черту!".  Remember as you write to apply your knowledge of stems and the one-stem system.  I want you to edit and revise.  Read and consider - use your knowledge and your notes.
  • If you need a dictionary there's this wonderful online resource from Duke - A grammatical dictionary of the Russian language.
  • If you would like a reference guide for grammar you can use this - also from Duke and actually from one of the authors of our textbook.
Russian I Students - You should continue working through the exercises on gender as well as studying your vocabulary words in chapter one.  In addition to the nouns you should know the possessive pronouns (моя, твое, его, их, наша, ваш) and the question words that we have learned in connection to the intonation patterns.  All of these things will be part of your vocabulary quiz on Thursday.  Don't forget too that you will have your project presentations on Thursday - is anyone bringing Russian food?

For all of you - here's our video about Кострома which we started in Russian II/III for the warm up - feel free to watch it to the end.  Remember our guests will be visiting in about a month!

English II:

If you didn't turn in your viewing guide from the Bulgakov film today then you will need to finish that for homework to turn in on Tuesday.  In addition, we'll be working on our projects on Tuesday before the due date and presentation on Thursday.  Feel free to work on your projects this weekend in preparation for our library workshop on Tuesday.  If you do research online, try to save the website addresses so that Ms. Ginocchio and I can show you how to complete your bibliography.

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Homework for All Classes - A and B Day - 22 and 23 September

I'll be out tomorrow in observance of Yom Kippur, so I wanted to go ahead and make this post now to everyone.

Russian II and III

On Thursday you will have a vocabulary quiz on your nouns in Chapter Four.  I will ask you to put these nouns into several cases and they may be paired with possessive pronouns in some areas.  This is a reminder to continue to study and review your case endings - the results of the test showed me that this is still needed.

Russian I

You should begin to review and study the vocabulary words in Chapter One of our textbook.  Begin your work on the nouns because that's where we'll start on Thursday.  In addition, you have some new readings that you can use to help you study and review the alphabet.  If you are still feeling behind on the alphabet or anything from the first test, please make time to see me and build in extra practice - you'll need to get this down pat!

English II

Tonight you'll be reading the fourth part of "The Overcoat" - it's when things really start to go downhill for Akaky.  As you read, pay attention to your new vocabulary and do your definitions - we will likely check vocabulary in the next few days.  Also, think about and take note of the following ideas as you read:

  • How do the police/government officials treat Akaky?  Why?
  • What generally happens to Akaky in this section?
  • Is there any irony in this section?  Where?
We'll review things on Thursday/Friday and start wrapping up this story and our unit on Russian literature.

AP English III

You should now have your journals to keep working on your Transcendentalist for a Week reflections.  Feel free to staple the previous entries into your journal instead of simply recopying them.  For tonight, you should spend time working on your vocabulary cards - remember that you need to do cards for five words.  Follow the instructions on the cards and ask if you have questions.  I also recommend using www.dictionary.com for this assignment as well as the website in your assignment sheet.

Additionally tonight you should begin drafting and working on your rough drafts.  The drafts will be workshopped in class on October 1 (the same day that your cards are due).  You need to have fifty percent of your final draft to get credit - my recommendation is that you do (at least) your introduction, two body paragraphs, and your conclusion.  After our workshop, Ms. Ginocchio and I will be available for conferences.

Have Thoreau and Emerson as well as Steinbeck in class on Friday - we'll be pulling a lot of ideas together.

A Day Homework - 21 May 2015

Well, we've survived our first day of exams.  Here are the reminders for A-day students to take them through the weekend.

Russian I and II

Your final exam study guides are now in your hands and you have your final assignment which is your last journal entry.  We will have time to really focus on the study guide during our review period before the final exam.  As you review the study guide, use your textbook and other resources.  Begin reviewing grammar, go over your quizzes to see where you have gaps, and learn your vocabulary.  Do a bit each day so that you can accomplish what you need to.

Your journal entry is due by the review session.  I know that many of you have things to prepare for, so I don't want to add to your list.  Some of you got this done today in class, and I applaud that.  Remember that the final journal will focus on the phrase "Это палка о двух концах!"  Write about this phrase, work it into your writing, and remember that by writing you're able to practice your language skills.

English II

Everything is due tomorrow:  essays, extra credit, missing work, everything!  I'll be grading essays this weekend and finishing your grades.  Don't miss this chance to do the final push on your grades.  Some of you have already told me your essays are ready - I'm very proud of how hard you've worked to accomplish this!

A-Day Students: Homework

A-Day Kids:  Sorry for not posting your work for the weekend.  It slipped my mind.  This will actually serve to get you ready for Thursday.

Russian I and II:

Your journals are due on Thursday as well as any make-up work or finishing work that you need to do.  You'll be watching a film and getting your study guide.  We'll be doing a lot of review the next few days so use the study guides to prepare yourselves.

English II

Essays are due on Friday (normally I'd say Thursday but Friday is the last day, so I'll call it there.)  I'm free after school on Wednesday-Thursday to help you if you need it.  I'll go over the rubric with all of you on Thursday so that you can make any final tweaks to your essay before the final due date.

Friday, April 17, 2015

Homework for the Weekend - 17 April 2015

Russian I and Russian II

Both of you started a project today and both of you have started a journal entry today.  My recommendation would be that you work on your journals and your projects in order to prepare for your quiz next week.  Both of you have quizzes on Thursday.  The phrase of the week is:

Не имей сто рублей, а имей сто друзей!
Don't have 100 rubles, have instead 100 friends!

Remember to write a full page in your journal incorporating this phrase.  Make sure that you double space your entry.  If you need anything else to do this weekend then you can work through and review your dialogues we went over today in class.  That will be helpful too.

English II

For homework this weekend you have a bit of writing to do for me as we are beginning our major essay on remembrance and tragedy.  Work through to the top of side two on your question sheet.  Have your answer and the counterargument figured out.  We'll put it all together on Tuesday and start planning the essay.

Also, if you would like to explore more of the Anne Frank House, please visit this website:  http://www.annefrank.org.  You can learn a lot more about the annex and the families hiding there.

Homework for A-Day Students - March 23, 2015

It was so good to see all of you today!  Let's go over what we need to do for tonight to get ready for Wednesday.

Russian II

Tonight you should make sure to finish your journals if you haven't yet.  I need them submitted before school tomorrow so that you can avoid a late grade.  If you turn it in past 7:30 tomorrow morning, it will be late and I will take points.  Make sure that you've got four entries with each entry using one of the phrases.  In addition, you need to make sure that your viewing guide for Служили два товарища has all questions answered so that we can do our writing workshop next class.

Russian I

I did not collect your journals today since I have the Russian II journals to grade.  Make sure that you have your journals for me on Wednesday as I'll collect them then for full credit.  You also have the task of completing your viewing guides on the film tonight and answering all questions so that we can have our workshop next class with new vocabulary and writing.

English II

You all have your next chunk of reading for tonight.  Continue working through Purple Hibiscus.  Read to page 140 in your books and make sure to reflect on what is happening to Kambili as she is spending time with her Aunty and cousins.  You may also want to think about how Ifeoma's family is different from Eugene's.

Friday, March 13, 2015

Homework for the Weekend - 3/13/2015 - A Day Students

Russian I and II

You have your journals due on Tuesday for the quarter.  This quarter you should have three entries.
  1. С кем не бывает?
  2. Маслом масленное
  3. Убить двух зайцев
Remember to use the phrase in the body of your writing.  Write one full page in your journal, double spaced.  Feel free to write about anything you would like but don't use translators.  Just write what you know and use your vocabulary.

If you didn't finish your test today, make sure that you finish it on Monday.

Russian I

Don't forget your family assignments are also due to me on Tuesday with your journals.

English II

Meet your next reading goal - you need to be to the end of page seventy in Purple Hibiscus by Tuesday.  You will be doing a lot of reading over Spring Break - read ahead now to be ahead for break.

Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Snow Day Number 6

It's one of these winters again, and they say that we're going to get more snow tonight.  Goodness.

Russian I and II

Make sure that your journals are complete.  Make sure that you are studying nightly to practice your grammar and vocabulary.  A great thing to do is to listen to Russian music and follow along with the lyrics - think about the grammar being used, use the Yandex translator to define words and build your vocabulary.  Keep using and studying Russian during this time.  There's a YouTube channel called ELLO which is all Russian music videos.

AP English III

I hope that all of you are using this time to get ahead on Invisible Man as well as your research.  When we return there will be a new, accelerated reading schedule as well as a quick overview on the idea of research outlines before you need to turn them in.  Be productive on these days off, a bit of work now will save a lot of work later.

English II

Just like AP you all should be getting ahead with your reading.  Spend time daily with Purple Hibiscus so that when you return you can be ahead.  Pay attention to characters, work on your vocabulary, and enjoy the time to simply read and get to know these characters.  The more you read now, the less you'll have later.

Monday, February 23, 2015

Homework for A-Day Students: 2/23/2015

It was great seeing all of you again today.  Here are your reminders to get you to Wednesday's classes.

Russian II

For tonight you need to work in your journals to revise or rewrite your last entry.  You should have two entries in your journal by Wednesday - one for week one and one for week two.  Make sure that your week two entry includes the phrase about good on good (маслом масленное) as well as the verbs of studying used in the correct forms and with the correct cases.

Outside of this feel free to work on studying your genitive plural irregulars that you learned today.

Lastly, the weather reports have been moved to next week (Tuesday and Thursday) you'll also likely have a quiz on Genitive Plural next week - prepare yourselves accordingly.  Missing assignments and quizzes need to be made up by Friday of this week for progress reports next week.

Russian I

For tonight, if you did not finish the twelve sentences about your animals, please make sure to finish those tonight.  Make sure to have two answers for each of your questions - one for your masculine animal and one for your feminine animal.  Use adjectives as much as you can to practice with your case endings.

As stated above, make sure to have your journals ready to be checked/collected.  You just have two - make sure that the second entry uses your phrase from last week.  You can also continue writing about your animals if you would like.

Lastly, remember about making up missed assignments by Friday.  Many of you have at least one thing missing.

English II

Make sure that you have met your reading goal for Purple Hibiscus on Wednesday.  Some of your classmates have gone as far as to already finish the whole book!  Be like them.  Read!

Friday, February 13, 2015

Homework for A Day Students - The Weekend!

Russian I

This weekend since you have Russian on a Friday you have an entry in your journals due for me on Tuesday.  Try to continue the same type of work that we were doing in class about our animals.  Write a variety of sentences using adjectives and nouns in as many cases as you can.  The more that you use the language the quicker you will acquire it.

Russian II

You also have your journals to write this weekend.  Make sure that you attempt to use the verbs of studying as you write this weekend - remember the case connections that you need in order to work with each of the verbs.  In addition, we will be working on our weather reports more in class on Tuesday.  Presentations will happen starting on Thursday.  This is an extension for your projects.

English II

For your first reading goal you will have until Thursday to read to the end of the first group of pages (to page sixteen).  As you read, try to focus on the characters - what are your first impressions of them?  Also, make sure that you are collecting vocabulary as you read to make sure that you are engaged and understanding what you read.  We will have more time to work on our projects next week - feel free to continue on those if you would like, but you should really prioritize your reading.

Thursday, April 10, 2014

Spring Break Announcements!

My break started about twelve minutes ago!  Your breaks will start tomorrow!  Here are all of your tasks to take you through break for all classes.

Russian I

Over break you need to spend time reviewing and learning the vocabulary for chapters one through four.  We will retake the most recent quiz again after break, so thorough vocabulary study will work well for that.  I'm posting here the links to the audio files for the vocabulary.

For the most part, the vocabulary is at the beginning of the chapter.  You will be held responsible for vocabulary in chapters one through four after the break.  Make sure to find ways to make this meaningful - label things in your house, use the vocabulary daily.  The more you interact with it, the more you'll actually learn.

AP English III

Over the break you will need to finish your reading and annotating of Invisible Man.  Also, I would suggest putting forth work on your motif projects which I gave to you today.  These projects aren't due until the 29th of April - so the week after we return.  I would like to see a lot of you the week after we return with drafts and ideas for this project so that we can review them together.

Furthermore, remember that when we return on 4/21 we will have a SYNTHESIS timed writing and I'll be checking your journals.

Honors English II

Over the break you should acquire yourselves a copy of Elie Wiesel's Night and work on the final drafts of your change essays.  Remember that these are due from you by the 24th, the day after our field trip.  I have given you this due date so that it is impossible to procrastinate (though I'm sure some of you still will).  I'll have the rubric for you on the 22nd so that you can use that to make some final tweaks.

ESL English III

You don't have any homework over the break to complete.  We will also be reading Night by Elie Wiesel, if you would like to get a copy and start reading before we return, that would be a good idea.

With that - I'm off to South America!  I won't be able to be reached past tomorrow morning so if you have an e-mail or a question, best to ask it sooner rather than later!

Homework for the Weekend/Monday - 11/30 and 12/3

Some important reminders for all of you to be aware of this weekend and Monday to prepare for Tuesday/Wednesday's classes.

First, all of you will be getting official progress reports on Tuesday/Wednesday.  I expect that you will take these home and get them signed so that I know that you have been in communication with your parents.  If you receive any additional paperwork to take home, I expect that you will also return that to me.

Freshman Focus

No homework for the weekend; we will have an assignment related to the Utopian School Projects on Tuesday/Wednesday night, so do be prepared for that.

AP English III

Over the weekend you need to be working on meeting your next reading goal which is to be to the end of chapter twenty-two by the class on Thursday/Friday.  This next section is vitally important in Huck's development.  Also, we will begin on our major project related to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and satire.  Make sure that your google accounts are active.

Next class you will have your first rhetorical analysis.  Prepare by reviewing your notes.  This will be a prompt you've never seen before, but the process is always the same.  Just be sure that you're ready.  Remember - car and driver - you've got to have both.  While you complete the timed writing I will be grading your journals and your vocabulary bookmarks.

English IV

Now that we've finished reading 1984 I want you to tell me what you thought of it.  Please answer the following question in a one page response, using clear details from the text to explain your opinion.

What did you think of 1984?  Why?

I will be collecting this assignment for a grade on Tuesday/Wednesday.  Also, if you have any tests that need to be turned in or any other make up work to turn in, get that done this weekend too as the window to submit those assignments will soon be closed.  And by soon, I mean Tuesday/Wednesday, after I give out progress reports.

Monday, November 17, 2008

Homework for 11/17 and 11/18

Tonight's homework will be a journal entry. I want you to think over all of the adventures that Odysseus has been on and answer the following question:

What do you think has challenged Odysseus the most? Why?

Answer in a complete paragraph in your journal.
