AP Research
Today in class we had a great time getting started on our QUESTS and delving into the first major assignment of the course which is our SOURCE LIST. The slides in Google Classroom outline the requirements for the Source List assignment. Hopefully these classes have been helpful for you in setting your pathway forward.
Remember that the assignment is due by the 20th of September. Your sources should be categorized and in APA format. All that I need is a list of your categorized sources for this assignment. Remember to continue working on Reading and Task logs as you need to.
Russian I
This week we will have our first quiz and it's on the alphabet. Today in class we practiced by writing and speaking a bit - this is a great way to prepare for what we have ahead. The quiz will cover just the letters, sounds, and some basic vocabulary.
I am also collecting handwriting packets through the week. They will be late if turned in after Friday.
For tonight, be sure that you have completed your handwriting, and that you are studying your cognate words [words that are the same in English and Russian]. Next class we'll start getting into some culture!
Advanced Russian
Today in class we reviewed how to form all three tenses in Russian - past, present, and future. And that's the main goal in tonight's homework. You should write a super short story -- three sentences, each sentence using a different tense. If you're in Russian III or IV then you should have at least six sentences. Additionally, you will need to complete your verb cards.
Wednesday's class is focused on review before the quiz on Friday. Be sure that it's productive by being prepared.

Homework for A Day - Weekend Edition - 30 August
Happy Labor Day Weekend Everyone! I'll see you all on Wednesday.
AP Research
Today's class is very similar to the class we'll have on Wednesday, except on Wednesday you'll be reading for your own QUEST and developing your own BoK. So, over the weekend you need to prepare for this. First, go to your PREP and in your Weekly Work Folder begin a Reflection Document. This week you'll complete reflection one. The questions are as follows:
What are you interested in researching this year in AP Research? Why? What problems are you interested in solving? Why are these significant problems that need solutions?
After you've finished this, take a look at the Task and Reading Log. Begin this work now! You're brainstorming by completing the reflection, so log that work!
Russian I
Today we learned our third group of Russian letters before having time to work with culture and the Russian holiday related to the first day of school. Over the weekend you should continue to work and practice with your letters, sounds, and vocabulary words. Our first quiz will be the week of September 9 and it will cover the whole alphabet. Prepare nightly now so that you are ready to move forward!

Homework for Winter Break - B Day - 20 December 2018
AP Seminar
Over our holiday break I think that it is so important that you all keep moving forward with your team work, but also begin to transition into your IRR work as well. Use the Unit Plan to know what will be assessed, when it will be assessed, and what the general process is.
On Google Classroom I've given you two packs of IRR and Scoring Commentaries. The rubric is also located with the scoring commentary. As you begin to craft and work through the IRR process be sure to use your previous work as well as all of the materials provided to us by College Board to be successful on our first performance task.
Advanced Russian
Come inside. Please. Come inside. Ask questions. Do what you need to do in order to close the gaps. Do something to make yourselves better than you were the previous days. Take advantage of what I'm giving you.
In this spirit, do what you need to do over break in order to close those gaps. I think that vocabulary is a big place to spend your time. We also have some of you missing projects. Those should be submitted as soon as possible.
Outside of this there is the Olympiada preparation (see the folder posted on Google Classroom). There is also our Chapter Preview. Chapter 6 is for Russian II and Chapter 10 is for Russian III. We are all going to be moving in to Verbs of Motion (time to talk about taking things and people and ourselves to different places)!

Today we began our next long process which is the learning and understanding of cases in the Russian language. Cases are a way of organizing a language and explaining what job a word has in a sentence. This requires us to understand a lot of grammatical vocabulary and terms, so I'll be teaching you a lot about grammar, in general, through this unit. We are starting with the Accusative Case since it is very easy to manage and learn.
Take the paper that I gave you and complete the required exercises. Put the words in the accusative case. Make the change to the endings. Be able to translate, if you can.
Additionally, be ready for your reassessment. Go back to our slides in Google Classroom and be able to conjugate verbs and use possessives. Spend time with your vocabulary to be able to learn it. It takes time, so put it in.

Homework for Wednesday - 8 October - B Day
AP Seminar
Hopefully after today's conversation related to dinner parties, similarities and differences, and points of view or perspectives, you have a bit more of an idea of what to do. Be sure to check the slides in Google Classroom if you need to.
As we move through the week, your task is to construct your annotated bibliography for your IRR. Remember to use the planning document and arrange your work around the rows of the rubric for the IRR. Your draft of the AB is due to me at the end of class on Friday. I'll go over the rubric with you on Wednesday for this.
Advanced Russian
Given what I am seeing from some of these quizzes it looks like many of you have a better idea of what you are doing and some of you still are struggling. Again, this is the last week to reach out for help and to make real improvements in what you are doing and in what you are able to do. Be sure that you are ready for the examination on Friday.

Homework for B-Day Students: 20 September 2018

AP Seminar
We will have our first Unit Examination on Monday. Remember that this will cover Freakonomics through fifty multiple choice questions and the EOC Task A. You'll have all 90 minutes to complete the assessment. Remember that you will be timed.
In order to prepare I would do the following:

You all also have an assessment on Monday - it will cover the One Stem Verb System in Russian for some of the most productive stems. I've uploaded the review sheet into your classroom on Google Classroom. You should be prepared to:

We will take our first quiz on the alphabet on Wednesday. I would like to spend more time on Monday with another activity as well as with some cultural work which will help you to finish learning your sounds and shapes. Over the weekend, take time to finish your handwriting packets. This is the most important task. The handwriting packet is worth 100 points - so it is a large amount of work to complete. Be sure that you have finished learning your sounds and shapes - like I said in class, there are tons of online resources to help you with this.
Lastly, if you see anything missing in your gradebook - be sure to have it ready for me by the end of next week. Some of you need to turn in a paragraph on the film we watched. Take care of that this weekend, and then turn it in to me

I would highly recommend working through the rest of your verb cards if you already have not, and you should complete Exercise 8Г on your own or with a colleague in order to review all of these skills together.

At the end of class today we divided up Freakonomics in order to prepare for next class. Next class we'll start working through some parts of our final assessment - the End of Course examination from College Board. To prepare for our first task, Task A, I want you to go through your chapter of Freakonomics and look for the:
Russian II/III
Today we reviewed the formation of the future tense as well as the declensions for accusative and prepositional case. Next class we'll apply many of these notes to our writing and speaking activity. Tonight, you should spend your time preparing for your assessment on Monday. Take a look at Exercise 8Г at the end of Chapter Four. This exercise identifies verbs and stems. Work with these - understand what the stem is telling you and the process of conjugation. That will be your major task on Monday. Make sure that you have your cards complete.
Russian I
We finished learning the alphabet today! Hooray! Now you can complete your handwriting packet as we get ready for our first quiz on the alphabet. You need to be sure that you know all 33 letters and the sounds that they make. We'll continue to play and practice with words and sounds as we review and prepare for the quiz. I would like to collect your handwriting packets from you on Thursday, but if you need to finish over the weekend, that's fine too. If you're having trouble with the alphabet, I would suggest that you listen to the alphabet song several times or find another good video to review. So much of this is auditory, so just looking at the letters won't help too much.

Homework for Russian Students - 2 January - Welcome Back!
С новым сладким годом! To a sweet new year! So happy to see all of you today - here's a quick recap of what we did in Russian as well as what you should do tonight to keep the learning going!
Russian I
Today we learned the five main jobs of the genitive case as well as how to change the endings of nouns so that they show that they are in the genitive case. Then we did some example sentences around the idea of ownership (I have a Honda. У меня есть Хонда.), lack of ownership (I don't have a Mercedes. У меня нет Мерседеса.), and stating where a person is from (I am from Durham. Я из Дарема.).
For your friend project you should write three new sentences using the genitive case. You should state something that each person has, doesn't have, and where each person is from. Remember you are only working on the slides about yourself, your male friend, and your female friend. You should already have sentences describing what they do and where they do it to accomplish your accusative case and prepositional case work.
You should also take a look at Exercise 8 in the end of Chapter One. This exercise is broken down for each case. You should take time to work on the genitive case so that you can learn your declensions better.

Lastly, keep in mind that you have one week to reassess or complete any missing work. The quarter for this class will end on Wednesday the 10th.

Today we began the journey of learning about verbs of motion in Russian. Primarily today we learned about going by one's own power or going by the power of another. We also discussed what it means for an action to be multidirectional or unidirectional.
Tonight for homework you should play with your new verbs (the four we conjugated today in class). You should be able to create a variety of present tense sentences which use these verbs to talk about going different places. Write at least eight sentences in Russian, two for each verb, and pair the sentence with an English translation.
Next class we will review this work and these verbs before moving on to the others. Be sure that you have written work to show next class.
Lastly, keep in mind that you have one week to reassess or complete any missing work. The quarter for this class will end on Wednesday the 10th.

- On Monday you'll take A lunch and then report to the Dell Lab for the Field Test. Ms. Oertel will be your test proctor. You'll complete listening and reading comprehension in Russian. This is a great way to get ready for your future AP Russian exam as well as to just get a general feel for what your skills are in Russian.
- On Wednesday you'll have your unit examination. Both classes will need to be familiar with telling time, taking about time expressions with prepositions and working with numbers. Outside of that, the exams are different. Russian II will see a lot of questions around aspect and aspectual choice. Make sure that you know when you should use perfective versus imperfective. Russian III will see questions related to reflexive pronouns and other types of pronouns. The exam will cover Chapter Five (Russian II) and Chapter Eight (Russian III) be ready!

If you did not have the chance to finish your sentences about yourself and your friend, then make sure that you get on Google Classroom tonight to finish that work. I will import grades tomorrow and give feedback before I return the assignment to you online. The assignment is a good practice for your mini-test next week. The mini-test will focus on verb conjugation and case declensions (nominative, accusative, and prepositional). During our review in class, many of you were able to generate the right answers - keep studying and practicing. Be sure to finish your exercises and to complete the extra exercises I gave you today in order to finish your learning!

Homework for Russian Students - 15 November
Good work today in class speaking and working with Russian. I like that I'm seeing a lot of engagement. Here are your reminders as you go into Friday.
Advanced Russian:
Since we didn't have a chance to do our workshop today, I want to make sure that all of you are continuing to work on your projects. Russian II - Since you got your rough drafts back today, focus on adding more complexity to your sentences. Add prepositional phrases, more verbs, and other vocabulary to help increase the complexity of the sentences. Russian III - Now we have a clear idea of our topic, the annexation of Crimea's effect on Russia's image in the world. Take this and move forward. Finish gathering your sources and start writing.
There are also exercises for you to consider. Russian III should look at exercise 21 on page 345. Russian II should look at exercise 9 in Chapter Five. Do what you can with these.

Homework for A-Day - 31 October 2017
English IV
Now that you know what will be on your exam next week, it is important that you start to study your notes and get yourselves together for the exam on The Canterbury Tales. Begin by focusing in on characters. Know who the characters are. Know where they appeared (which story/part of The Canterbury Tales). And, finally, know how they act and what their attitude is like.
Advanced Russian
II - You should be able to complete a rough draft of your Russian aspect sentences given the work we did in class. Begin to develop complexity in your sentences by adding in some of the prepositions we have looked at today. Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 8 September 2017
Russian I
Over the weekend you should be able to complete all of your handwriting practice packet. You do not need to do any of the word searches or any of the exercises where it asks you to translate from English to Russian. Do write all of the words that you are given in Russian in your best handwriting.
I will collect these packets on Tuesday. Tuesday will be a day that we will continue to work on phonetics and our sounds in the Russian language.

We're starting the process of getting more familiar with stems, endings, and how to combine different stems with endings. Over the weekend I want you to continue to apply what we have been learning related to non-past conjugations, past tense conjugations, and the different actions related to stems.
From the Chapter One through Four vocabulary focus on one verb from each chapter. Try to pick different stems. Work with the verb to show how it combines with other endings at the stem. Show the different processes. Work with this information. It becomes easier the more you spend time with it.
Further - if during our writing conference I asked you to revise your assignment, take care of that this weekend and have it ready on Tuesday. If your writing was not ready, be ready to hand it in on Tuesday.

You all got some great work done today in class related to your essays. Remember that you can go back to your DPSNC Google Drive account and continue working on this over the weekend. The goal is to have a complete introduction and body paragraph. We'll spend more time next week continuing to revise and work on these assignments.

Russian I
Now we know all of the letters except for the two silent ones! Hooray! I'll start to speak a lot more Russian with you now since we have a good base underneath us. For tonight as well as for the weekend you should be focused on continuing to learn the letters of the Russian alphabet. Eventually you will want to be able to read and write the letter without looking at your notes.
Be sure to practice with all of the letters and words in the packet. Give your best attempt at all of the writing in the packet!

We did not have a chance to get to our writing conferences today, and that's okay. Be sure to bring your writing with you on Friday so that I can review it then. For tonight you will want to work with the Russian II verbs on the sheet I gave you in class. You will find it helpful to use an online resource to help you with conjugations with these verbs. I stumbled across this site - http://cooljugator.com/ru - which does a lot of work for you. Remember with each verb to work through the tasks at the bottom. Russian II should do row one. Russian III should do all of the Russian II verbs.

Today in class we got a lot of good writing and planning done to set us up for Friday. On Friday, we'll be going into the computer lab in order to start writing our personal essays. Make sure that you have thoroughly thought about your brainstorming and that you have considered some moments from your life that you'll include in this essay as evidence.

Advanced Russian:
Tonight read over the section of the textbook that covers your new grammar for the beginning of the unit. For Russian II this really just covers page 209. Remember that you want to be reviewing and studying your nominative case and genitive case endings. Don't forget your vocabulary.
For Russian III we have the information on modal expressions which is covered on pages 364-369. You should focus on the usage of the dative and nominative cases in this section as well as the use of the verb "to be". You also have vocabulary.
For Russian IV there's the information on verbs of positioning. This is covered on 501-504. Remember to study your conjugations of the new verbs - there are some weird stems there. Did I mention your vocabulary work?

You have a quiz next class on verbs and conjugation. Remember our study guide that we created. Focus on your chapter one verbs and notes. Hopefully the constant practice has helped you to determine what to do with a verb and how to do it to form the present tense in Russian.

Homework for the Weekend - 2 September - A Day
Russian II-IV
This weekend I want you all to keep working with your verb knowledge. Now you know (or have reviewed) the present and past tense endings for the conjugation patterns as well as knowing how the stems relate to the conjugation patterns - it's time to put all of this together. Take the five verbs that you have been working on and conjugate them for present and past tense. As you conjugate - do the conjugations in ST before going to Russian. Show how the stem combines with the ending, show what process happens, and then show what this means in Russian letters. It's my hope that things are starting to make sense to you with all of this.
Be prepared for a transcription quiz soon.

We've now learned our three groups of letters - the friends, the false friends, and the Greeks - we only have one group left to finish the whole alphabet. This weekend, work on your handwriting packets. You should complete everything up through exercise thirteen on page six. Feel free to work ahead if you would like. I'll collect this when we finish learning our letters for a homework check.

This weekend you have some writing to do for us. Read the prompt on conformity carefully and go through the tasks on the front of the sheet. Work through those tasks and complete them on the sheet. They'll help you to put the paragraph together on the back. Do your best with this writing - we'll spend time working on it to revise it and make it stronger.

Between covering a class this morning and coaching swim practice before school even started it has been a crazy day. Phew. Here are your reminders moving to tonight.
Russian II/III
Please make sure that you are nightly reviewing your conjugations of the verbs of motion. This is key as we keep going through the unit since the verbs are the key goal we have within the unit. Make sure that you can conjugate both prefixed and non-prefixed verbs of motion in both aspects/types. For homework tonight there is a different assignment for each group:
Russian III - Make sure to finish the prefixed verb of motion assignment we began to review today in class. Then, make sure to finish the selection exercise that I gave you today.
Russian II - Now that you know about the prefix по added to unidirectional verbs of motion you have an exercise where you must select the proper verb for a given situation. Translate, look for key words, and remember that there are certain rules to follow when making your choice of verb - try to internalize these rules now.
