End of the Semester - Blue Day - 25 January

AP Language

Easy day to end the quarter and semester in AP Language. We're focused on researching, finding key sources to use for our arguments, and refining our topics even further. Keep checking in with our discussion board post and reply to yourself and others. Help to make ideas more specific. Consider the work we've seen so far from College Board and a synthesis prompt and response.

What can you discuss? What can you analyze? What is the argument on the prompt that you can make on the prompt? What's a possible counterargument or another approach to the issue?

Next week we'll discuss feedback from the Exam and look at our first task, the Annotated Bibliography. You'll want about five to seven good sources and a more refined research topic in order to really access the lessons next week. Enjoy the long weekend - remember that I'm not available until Monday.

AP Research

Simple day to end the quarter and semester in AP Research today. We looked at our unit plan for Unit 4 - Data Collection and Analysis. The major task today is outlining the next six weeks of your work in the course. It's a good idea to make a plan now if everything goes perfectly. Design your bailout plans and backup plans now so that you can initiate them when needed. 

Throughout this unit you're focused on collecting the data to answer the question. A lot of you are focused on working with other people, so you'll need to give yourself the time and space to do this effectively. Be ready to be annoying and be ready to use class time super effectively. 

We'll have six elevator pitches on Tuesday and then the following six on Thursday. Be sure to submit your visuals to the space on Schoology. New reflection question is unlocked for your consideration. Enjoy the long weekend!

17 January

AP Language

Really lovely beginning to our week in AP Language today. We were focused in on what the synthesis question is, what the prompt pack looks like, and what a high scoring sample looks like. I also took us through a bit of a revision activity so that we could focus on tweaking some of the content in order to clarify the content and especially the commentary. We ended our day with some time in our books to prepare for next class.

Next class is Meeting 2. Review the unit plan to see what you'll be doing. Remember that if you're responsible for bringing Passage 1, then you should have that selected in advance of the group meeting. Keep reading. Get into your books. If you have any work to complete from the AP Exam, it needs to be settled this week.

AP Research

Wonderful day in AP Research to start the end of the unit on method development. Today, since we're getting back into a focus on our presentations skills, we watched a POD. I hope that you enjoyed seeing the student's work and understanding the essential elements of the POD rubric and assessment. From there we talked about the elements of Elevator Pitch 2.0 and looked at some sample questions and work to help us put that together. 

Next class is a working day for us focused on the Elevator Pitch. We'll be writing, thinking, and crafting. This is a great chance to start putting your eventual slides together too. Remember to submit your drafts and your reflection questions. These are your final major assessments of the quarter. Be ready to pitch next week!

6 January 2023 - Closing out Quarter 2

AP Language

Ugh! The bane of our existence! AP Classroom. The program was super glitchy, so some of you may need to get in your extended time in Lion Time on Monday. Next class we'll complete the FRQ - Rhetorical Analysis and Argument; hopefully we won't have the same problems as we had today. 

If you have something to complete, please do so. A few of you need to submit your final five vocabulary cards and very few of you need to complete the discussion on your choice of book for Unit 5. We'll begin in earnest on that unit next week after we finish our exam. The next AP Exam will be after Spring Break, at the beginning of Quarter 4.

AP Research

Fun times in AP Research today. Interesting work and interesting conversations related to data, data collection, and the way that we weave our limitations into our discussions and analysis. I like the way that we're getting super aware of what we're doing and why we're doing it. Keep in mind the importance of Peer Review during this process. Having a friend to check behind you for limitations and gaps is important. It's easy to develop blind spots in this work, a friend can help us stay clear on the path.

Over the weekend, be sure to complete your newest PREP Reflection Question. I've updated the document in Course Resources. You'll have two more of these questions before the end of the quarter. You should also be actively writing and creating content. Draft! 

Next week we'll have a lot of working time. Be sure to get your permission slips signed and completed. Also, clear your revisions if you haven't yet. See you next week!

8 December - End of the Week

AP Language

Excellent day in AP Language today as we understood the rhetorical situation for The Crucible and some of the key motivations pushing Miller in the construction of his allegory. Be on the lookout for vocabulary as we are reading. The articles in this unit can get you all ten of your words. Continue to review previous readings if you need to. I hope that watching the film today brought some new understandings to the play.

For tonight, focus on any assignments you need to submit for Unit 3 including reading reflections and vocabulary. In Current Lessons there's a link to a cartoon. Watch the cartoon as you start reading the article I gave you in class "The Allegory of the Cave". You don't have to finish reading the article on your own, but you can if you want.

AP Research

Great day in AP Research. I love days when we get to talk and conference. The IRB had feedback for you all to push you in a good direction moving forward. Consider the edits and feedback you received today this weekend and into next week. I'll need to see your edits for you to clear the IRB. Remember that if you make changes to your research question, then those changes should be seen in other areas, like your survey questions.

Over the weekend, complete your newest PREP question. Check your email for your feedback written out. This is also a great time to be writing and pulling ideas together on your paper. I think that we're all going to be in a great place to get started with participants after Winter Break.

17 November

AP Language

Today was our assessment day - double timed writing - Question 2 and Question 3. I am very much looking forward to scoring these essays and getting you feedback to push you further into your development as readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators. I hope that you found that the prompts approachable and that you see improvements in some of your writing skills. 

Over the weekend, spend your time with Gatsby. We're finishing the novel before Thanksgiving Break so that we can focus on our summative assessments upon our return. Read and annotate Chapters 8 and 9. They run together to complete the conclusion of the novel. Think about who wins and who loses and how this helps Fitzgerald to communicate an argument about an idea. Your vocabulary can be submitted. Don't submit the motif tracker, but keep developing it. Be ready for assessments when we return from Thanksgiving. We'll complete most of the work in class. 

Our next unit will be on The Crucible by Arthur Miller. If you'd like your own copy of this play, now's a good time to order one.

AP Research

Today's class was very similar to our last class - it was our IRB Working Week this week. The work that we are doing now is some of the most important work that we have to do. I appreciate seeing your effort and the support that you are giving to each other. I'm also glad that so many of you are finding a new purpose for the work that we have done earlier in the course like our Annotated Bibliography and our Research Posters.

Next class we'll be having our Ethical Practices Check. This is for a grade. I've opened up your newest PREP Reflection question as well for the weekend. Continue to work, plan, and create. The goal is the pass IRB with as few revisions as possible in order to begin your work with your data.

AP Language

Lovely day for feedback in AP Language today. We updated our score sheets, saw a bit of growth, and reviewed targeted feedback for our next writing assignments. Keep in mind that the feedback you get is derived right from the work you've done. Take a look at the rubric you received and the work you did. Do you see the feedback in your work? You may want to annotate your work in order to prepare for your next attempt. We'll be doing a timed write again soon to resubmit these writing skills.

Tonight your goal is to complete Chapter 6. Read and annotate for more information about Gatsby and his past. Your timeline will be a helpful tool here. Also, be sure that you complete your motif tracker as you are reading. Keeping up with this assignment bit by bit will really help you. Consider why Fitzgerald organized the appearances of the color in this way. How does it help him to make an argument about an idea?

AP Research

Today was our kickoff for Unit 3 - Method, Approach and the Design of Scholarly Inquiry. This unit is the make or break method because it's what distinguishes the pass from the fail. You have to have a means to answer your question and you have to be able to explain and justify each part of that plan. I think that a lot of you are now seeing a new way to use your existing work, be sure to keep paying it forward as we move forward. 

For tonight, you should complete your Expert Advisor Research - find one potential expert in your field. Research them. How may they be helpful for you? This is a great chance to try to reach out and get additional help - for some of you it may be a chance to get ready for your futures. We'll discuss these people next class as a means to discuss ethics and proper work in our field. Also, keep writing. Use the plan and sketch your outlines. Putting the content together helps! 

26 and 27 October

The blog was blocked yesterday, so here are updates for yesterday's English 10 class and today's AP Language and AP Research classes. Remember that tomorrow is the last day of the quarter and an early release day, there's no Lion Time. Any work (or revisions) submitted by 9:00 am on Monday will be scored for this quarter.

English 10

Great day today in English 10 as we got started on our first major writing assignment - our definition essay. For this assignment we're defining a concept - a hero or a villan - and using a text or several to provide examples. Remember that you'll get a full grade for this assignment - on each part of your essay. Today we worked through the assignment and the outline; we also planned our evidence. This will put us in a great place for our writing workshop next class. We also finished up with Membean. Remember that we'll take time each class for this, so have your laptops ready.

For tonight, be focused on the end of the quarter. If you have a project resubmission, be sure to give me the rubric. If you see any missing assignments, now is the time to complete them to raise your grade for the end of the quarter.

AP Language

Great day today in AP Language as we focused in on lies, Chapter Three, and the simmering conflict between fantasy and reality in the text. We discovered the ways in which many of the characters, including Nick, lie and began to understand some of the reasons for those lies. Continue to notice trends in the text related to this essential conflict.

Over the weekend, we're taking a break from Fitzgerald and spending time with Andrew Carnegie. The article is posted on Schoology for you. Read and annotate. Consider what Carnegie's burden is for other rich people. How do the people of The Great Gatsby measure up? 

If you have any work to submit - vocabulary or America projects - they are due. I'll be able to score work submitted by Monday morning and update grades.

AP Research

Easy day in AP Capstone today as we had our end of unit working day. The priorities in our room are as follows:

1. Complete any tasks for the end of the quarter. Some of you are missing your reflections for the quarter and your Annotated Bibliography. If you would like to do a reassessment of either task, be sure that the reassessment is in by Monday morning to be rescored.

2. Your next class is for your poster and pitch. You'll have two minutes to present your pitch. Fill in the blanks on the three sentence starters. Use the template provided. Submit a PDF of your poster to the assignment to the space. We'll be focused on giving and getting feedback next class - it's your first presentation day!

3. There's a new reflection question posted for your PREP. Be sure that you are avoiding vague language or concepts. Define everything. Don't just say method - which one? Why that? Evaluate, define, and specify at all times. 

30 September - Happy Friday!

AP Language

Easy peasy, pumpkin squeezy as we round out September and kick off October! Today was our end of Unit 2 working day. There's a few goals that we have as we close out, so let's review:

1. Do you have a missing project? I'm working through grading and should have them finished by the middle of next week. Be sure to submit if missing. I'll give back rubrics with feedback to guide revisions if needed/wanted.

2. Vocabulary is open to be collected. Remember that words should come from class readings or resources (like the tone word sheet). If you don't know why you lost points on earlier vocabulary cards, be sure to reach out and ask. 

3. Our seminar is next class. Be sure that you have finished your choice reading and annotated it for the author's message and elements of the rhetorical situation. How does the author convey an argument? What stands out to you? What connections can you make?

4. Your final project for this unit has been assigned and reviewed. I'll be giving you some more time over the next classes to work on this further. For now, start by considering your examples and your thesis. What is America to you? How can you prove that? What's the counter argument?

Lovely Friday! We took our time today to read a Level 4 paper and understand some of our key elements that are at play in the paper. From there, it was off to the mines as we are writing, finishing work from Unit 1, or completing reflections on our work so far.

Next week will be a lot of time for you to write your Annotated Bibliography. Don't be afraid of being repetitive. Use the templates and support that you have to complete this work. It may seem daunting to write twenty five entries, but the supports are there to help you do it.

Enjoy the weekend. Your Annotated Bibliography is due Week 8 - that would be October 14.

7 September - Blue Day - Wednesday

AP Language

Great day today in AP Language - we reviewed our diagnostic exam (I'll have the scores in soon) and then got started with the main thrust of our class, "What is America?" Throughout the year we'll be exploring the concept and working to define it using our various texts and authors through the year. We're starting with our first reading tonight - Thomas Jefferson's "The Declaration of Independence". Find it in your textbook, or the scanned copy in the folder, and annotate for purpose and audience (consider that there are multiple audiences and the purpose will shift for each one). Keep your textbook at home, but have your notes in class!

AP Research

We continue to build our research question by refering to the work of others in our field. This is the first and likely one of the most important steps of our whole process this year. Working with our Body of Knowledge is key to ensuring success in this class and the work that you'll be doing through the year. 

Continue farming the databases, ask the librarians for help, and begin to work with your classmates who are in similar fields or disciplines. You are your best help in this process. Building your source list will help you to check for holes in your QUEST - if you find them, plug them. And let me know how I may be able to help.

24 August - Wednesday

AP Language

Today we finished our MCQ diagnostic and moved into the FRQ. In the FRQ there are three essays to write - the synthesis (with sources), the rhetorical analysis (you read and explain a text), and the argument (you argue your point on a topic). Most of you worked through Question 3 today, which is what I recommended given the timing constraints.

Next class we will finish our diagnostic exam. You will have completed your first timed essays of all types and seen questions. Be sure that you've collected about FIVE vocabulary words from the exam, you'll need them next week for vocabulary cards. As always, reach out with any concerns or questions.

AP Research

Great day today, y'all. We did some great thinking and working around key concepts in our classroom. It's important that we shift our ideas and perspectives on some words and concepts so that we can work through our class with our heads on straight. We also spent some time with our Academic Paper Rubric - understanding this and the importance of the research question to your success on the rubric will help you to frame the early work that we are doing.

The second part of class was for us to set-up, share, and populate our PREP Folders. Be sure to follow the instructions in the folder under Current Lessons. Most of your work will be logged in the PREP and we will fill all our folders through the year. Most of your work right now will be in Weekly Work. 

Your first homework assignment is posted. It's due next week. Follow the instructions and complete your research on a Nobel winner of your choice. It's a great way to show your understanding of the essential vocabulary from today.

Early Release Day - 5 March 2021

AP Research

Next week is our final week of this unit. The major tasks that we have ahead of us are meant to provide a check-in on our larger process and make sure that we're all moving toward our goals in the class. On Friday of next week you'll meet together as a writing group to discuss your academic paper drafts and give constructive feedback. We'll do some work as a group on Friday before you meet to discuss the rubric and what to look for as you read.

Data collection should, mostly, be complete at this point. If you're still chasing down a few sources of information or a few last survey responses, that's not a bad place. But you may want to ask yourself if that additional data is needed at this point. Is it possible to go deeper into the analysis of the data you have instead of finding more?

I'll be available on Monday and Wednesday to assist you next week asynchronously. We'll meet on Friday to submit tasks and do our writing workshop. Be aware that your PREP Check deadline has been extended. The newest reflection question has been posted.

13 January - Wednesday - Grey Day

English Students - Be sure that you are actively moving through your goals and assignments here at the end of the quarter. 

AP Language - Note that all of your assignments have been assigned/posted. No more grades will be done for the second quarter, but we will open quarter three with several major tasks related to developing research papers. 

English 10 - Be aware that we have two writing assignments in the next few classes. This will provide a fair amount of points and affect standing at the end of the quarter. Be sure that you are working to complete these important tasks in the class time given.

AP Research

We are quickly approaching the time of the year where most of the work is up to you to work through and complete. It's now time to move forward into recruiting and working with participants or just simply finding data for your further analysis in reaching your research goal. Be sure that you have a list of tasks and to do's as well as a calendar to help you move through these next weeks. Also remember that you have a lot of support in this classroom and building for your work. Reach out to resources as you need to so that you are able to problem solve as you keep moving forward.

Use your PREP regularly to document your process, collect your work, and continue to reflect. Remember that you will have a new reflection question posted every Friday on Google Classroom.

AP Research

Today was all about getting organized, checking in, and making sure that we are ready to move forward. Like I said today with the writing and revising guides, today is a good time for us to make sure that we're ready to go forward by ensuring all of our preliminary work is gathered and organized. Be sure to keep working with your PREP as we move forward so that everything you've done and need is readily accessible.

Homework includes finishing Expert Advisor research to prepare for our brief presentations on Friday. Additionally, finish any and all revisions in advance of the IRB's next meeting. There will be a place for you to submit your revised proposal and tools on Friday.

Updates for All Classes - 13 March - Before the Closure

AP Research

Welcome to crazy town everyone. Over the next few days (or weeks) I hope that all of you stay safe and secure. Remember to think and be smart. Don't panic. Plan! Don't freak out. Focus!

You should continue to move forward with your work for this class as it related to your Academic Paper and Presentation/Oral Defense. I have posted the reflection questions in the document to take you to the end of the quarter. Additionally, I have posted PREP Check 3.2 to outline what is due for your final PREP Check. Be aware that you will need to be creative in your approach to peer editing during this time, but I think that you can do it.


Once I have an idea of the expectation related to instruction, I'll let you know. Let's just keep moving forward with what we know we need to do. Remember, 46 days are left until we submit!

AP Literature

If you did not complete your sonnet group projects today and submit them, please be sure that they are submitted by the end of the day on Monday so that I can assess them and get them in the gradebook for you all. Remember that we will not be evaluating each other as members of the group. Since we are not able to present in person, I would like for you to submit a recording of what you would say to accompany your slide. You could also submit a video with your slides if you would like.

Outside of this be sure that you are finishing Twelfth Night in advance of our timed writing on this text. I'll post reading and analysis guides for you next week. The timed writing will likely be the final assessment for Q3. We will return and jump into our independent novels. Go ahead and get started on your pamphlet, heck, go ahead and read a few extra books if you can!

Homework for A Day Students - 11 March 2020

AP Research

Today was a day to kick-off Unit 5. This unit's goal is for us to have ample time in class for us to finish the work that we are doing in this classroom. Remember that your paper is the key because the POD is based off of your paper. I hope that our reading of a paper today was helpful for you. The takeaways related to the METHOD/LIT REVIEW/RESULTS and connections between these sections were key. You may find it helpful to reflect on all the papers we've read today as you consider what you need moving forward. If you need another sample paper, please ask and I'll find what I can.


Tonight, complete Reflection 23. This is the end of Week 23. Tonight you should complete writing through to METHOD (perhaps revising based on what we saw today) and start to outline your RESULTS section. We'll be doing some PEER EDITING on the 17th after tomorrow's work day. Be ready!

Russian I

Today we had a great day learning some new grammar/vocabulary as well as playing with dominoes to see the matches we can make in Russian for agreement. Remember that some of our words can be wild-cards -- they work with any gender and case.

For tonight you should finish your house project floor plan and a rough draft paragraph. You'll turn this in to me on Friday before the quiz so that I can check for completion and mark any errors. We will have our quiz on Friday - it will cover adjectives and their endings. I think that you'll be prepared if you keep studying your charts.


Outside of this, focus on vocabulary. We'll be wrapping up the quarter soon. Be sure to check for any missing work.

Advanced Russian

Today in class we had a day to work with music and find lots of language related to our verbs of motion. I enjoyed seeing a lot of you really listening intently, and finding that you were able to understand a bit of these songs once you focused on the grammar you know. This is a great type of activity to learn how to use language and grammar more conversationally.

Tonight, you should all focus on your projects. You should walk into class with a ROUGH DRAFT of one of your stages of your journey. Use the slides to see the example. Follow the template and remember that you're writing only A and B type sentences for the stages.


Your unit examination is going to fall on the 23rd of March. The projects will be due shortly. I'll have a unit study guide for you soon.

Homework for B Day Students - 10 March 2020

AP Literature

Today in class we had time to review the various ways in which language is manipulated to create meaning in Shakespeare's sonnet as well as in key moments of Act 3. We finished our day by watching the comedy come alive as worked through the Globe Theatre production.

For tonight you should spend time reviewing Act II and III in advance of the assessment on Monday. Remember that vocabulary cards will also be collected. The tenth card can be one of your own choosing. Remember that we have multiple major assignments coming up soon to prepare for including a timed writing, MCQ, and our group presentation. Next class you should be coming in with a clear idea of what your portion of the presentation will be.



AP Research

Today was our final working day for this unit. Hopefully by the end of today you were able to get to the point that you are either done with your POD/PAPER through to the data section. If you don't have this complete, I hope that you have a clear plan by which to complete this.

Russian I

We did so many things today in our classroom today! We were designing our Russian houses, we were practicing with our grammar through a quick exercise review, and we were also doing some culture as we celebrated International Women's Day. I hope that the women in your lives enjoy the cards you wrote for them.

Tonight for homework our main goal is to prepare for Friday's quiz. You'll be quizzed on your adjective case endings. Can you do the exercises? Can you finish them? This is a great practice for you. Also, use the example paragraph to complete a rough draft of your project paragraphs. Come in next class with at least one of your paragraphs done.

Wednesday will be our last review day before our quiz on Friday.

Advanced Russian

Today in class we had a day to work on our projects (and to look at an example version of the writing) as well as to review our translations related to verbs of motion in our chapters. Tonight, there are a few tasks for you to complete in order to prepare for Wednesday.

First, remember that your reassessments of your quiz are due next class. You can also put rubles on your assessment. We will be taking our unit exam around the 23rd of March, so remember that these quizzes are your way to prepare. Second, you should be able to write the rough drafts for your projects tonight. Follow the project guidelines and the sample paragraph. That will help a lot as you finish your work.

Next class we'll spend time with some real Russian texts that use verbs of motion, should be an interesting day to say the least.

Dear students! Please turn in your documents for your PREP Check 3.1 to Google Classroom. If you don't turn them in by Sunday, I'll go hunting in your portfolio for what I need. As a reminder you should submit your:

• Reflections to Number 21
• Record of Communication (Expert Adviser and Participants - If none, say none.)

This is forty points for completion. This is also a good weekend to check on everything! Be sure that you have POD Slides started, you've revised your paper, you're continuing to get ahead for what you have coming next!

Russian Classes

I hope that you all enjoyed your day with Russian culture and investigations. If you did not turn in your work to the substitute today in class, then give it to me on Monday. Remember that next week we will have quizzes (Russian I) and the days to complete our grammar/vocabulary project (Russian I-IV). This weekend is a good one to study vocabulary, complete exercises, and work on your projects.

Homework for B-Day Students -- 4 March 2020

AP Literature


Today we read and discussed various features of Sonnet 55 (including meter, scanning, caesura, assonance, enjambment, and other devices). The best way to get a handle on iambic pentameter is to memorize a perfectly metrical line and always have it ready to hand (mine is: "she is as in a field a silken tent"). Some lines in Shakespeare are not always perfect, which can affect meaning. Then you all gave me some great starts for your pitches for the sonnet projects. We will keep fine-tuning this as we go along, but I was impressed by your attention to the companion sonnets. We then began watching a different version of TN, Act 3 scene 1. This scene is pretty complicated! We did not get to discuss it in its entirety. I would like everyone to use the viewing guide to review/reread the scene, in addition to Scenes 2 and 3, for Friday. We will also talk about Sonnet 94. Be sure to annotate!!! Point out devices, key words, images, anything that stands out, and comment on what you observe. See you Friday!

AP Research

Good Afternoon All! Today was a day to begin our conferences and our check on data check. We will finish these on Friday with Mr. Ellison leading the conversation. I want to remind all of you that you are having your first PREP Check this weekend. I'll be looking at four folders for documentation. These are as follows:

1. Research Records - I should see data sets here. Even if they are blank, they should be here.

2. Records of Communication - Participants and Expert Advisers should be logged here.

3. Weekly Work - 21 Reflections. Task Log updated to most recent tasks.

AP Research

Good Morning All! Today was a day to begin our conferences and our check on data check. We will finish these on Thursday. I want to remind all of you that you are having your first PREP Check this weekend. I'll be looking at four folders for documentation. These are as follows:

1. Research Records - I should see data sets here. Even if they are blank, they should be here.
2. Records of Communication - Participants and Expert Advisers should be logged here.
3. Weekly Work - 21 Reflections. Task Log updated to most recent tasks.

4. Assessment Task Drafts - A draft through the method section.

Russian I

Today in class we had a day to review our case endings and to begin on our grammar and vocabulary project - The House of My Dreams / Дом Моей Мечты. For this project you need five rooms and two items. You should use adjectives to describe everything, especially in your writing. We'll take a look at a sample paragraph next week.

I also reviewed the quiz goals for next week Wednesday. Make sure that you're reviewing your charts and grammar packets daily to be ready for the quiz. Working with the exercises that I've assigned are also helpful.


I'll be available for extra help on Monday and Tuesday for the quiz. You'll get progress reports on Thursday!

Advanced Russian

Today in class we did a bit of everything. We now have our paper that goes over ALL of the prepositions we can use with verbs of motion and Russian III/IV students learned the last few verbs of motion in the language. Remember - I will never ask you ask you about these words; they're just for extension and awareness.

From there we moved to review our translation exercise to see A, B and C type sentences and how to transform them into Russian. We finished with a review of our most recent quizzes and our newest project.


Next class we'll have time with Anna as well as time to work on the project assigned today. This will be your first in-class workshop, so remember there's just one left after that.
