Homework for 13 February - A Day - PLC Day

Happy Early Release Day! Here are your reminders for Friday.

AP English III

You have now received your information on registration for next year. Remember that you have due dates and expectations. Please see me outside of class for recommendations on what to take next year based on my opinion - and I'll remind you that it's just that, my opinion.

For tonight you should complete the reading of Emerson's "The Over Soul" as well as complete your research topic planning document in full. I'll be collecting your research topics on Friday. We'll be doing a lot of discussion and work with Emerson on Friday as we understand what exactly the "Over Soul" is and what Emerson wants us to know about it. We'll also be getting more into the weeds on the philosophy of Transcendentalism. Your notes from Monday would be key in working through Emerson's writing. Our brief discussion and notes on rhetorical modes are also helpful and important. I posted an electronic version of the text in Google Classroom if you need it.

If there is anything that has not been graded or submitted for the Beloved unit then your time is quickly escaping. Books should be turned in tomorrow before school if they were missed today. Please see PowerSchool for the most updated information including those of you who are still missing an element of your final projects.

English IV

Today in class we started to end our unit on studying and reading poetry by completing our final TP-CASTT study of a poem as a group. Then, we transitioned into working independently on our own poetry study. Remember that this poetry study is going to end in a formal writing assignment. An essay in which you explain what the poem that you have chosen means to you and how the poet has developed that meaning to you.

If you did not finish your individual TP-CASTT sheet in class, it is important that you finish that for homework. I'll return the ones that I have on Friday and then we'll get started with writing and planning our essay responses.

Homework for the Weekend - End of the Quarter - 11 January

English IV

We are all done for the quarter. All that's left is to do Acts IV and V of Twelfth Night which is going to happen next class. It would be a great idea to spend some time going through your notes and organizing them so that you can easily study for our unit exam on Twelfth Night and Shakespearean Comedy. This exam is going to happen on 22 January for B day students. Be ready!

AP English III

Today was a bit of a whirlwind in order to get 4B caught up with the early release last week. After today's class we should have a better understanding of what Transcendentalism is, who Ralph Waldo Emerson is, and why "The Over Soul" is an important text. Remember that with a complex text like "The Over Soul" you will want to review it many times especially as we continue to learn more through the unit.

Tonight you are starting your reflections for your Transcendentalist for a Week project. Tonight's reflection is "What I gave up and why." Be sure to write a thoughtful paragraph that accomplishes this. The rest of the weekly reflections will track your progress and what you are learning from day to day. Lastly, next week, you'll look over the days and write a reflection on the week. I'll collect your larger reflection, as well as the minor ones, next week on the 18th of January.

Over the weekend you'll also want to read and annotate Zora Neale Hurston's "How It Feels to be Colored Me" - As you read this, pay attention to how Hurston herself is very much a Transcendentalist. Look at what she has to say about nature and music, about identity, and about how people can be different and yet the same. There's a great metaphor at the end of her article that is important to look at. Hurston should help you to make sense of Emerson - so go back to him, after you've visited with Ms. Zora.

Lastly, remember that your final work on your Gatsby synthesis assignment is due tonight by 11:59. Be sure that it shows good work so that Mr. Bernhard can finish your grades for the quarter.

9 January - B Day - And a good day was had by all...

AP English III

Way to go on completing your midterm examination today. I will have scores for the multiple choice put in likely today or tomorrow and the essay scores will go in as soon as they are all prepared. You will receive a grade for completing both portions of the midterm, separately.

For tonight, you have some reading and writing to attend to. In terms of your reading, spend your time with Emerson's "The Over Soul". As you read you will want to find different elements depending on your class period.

3B Students should focus on finding elements of Transcendental philosophy in the text as well as deriving questions for our large class seminar. 4B Students have not yet had the lesson on Transcendental philosophy, so you should be looking at areas of the text related to truth and reality as Emerson defines them. Remember that you should thoroughly read and annotate about half of the piece (to approximately paragraph twenty).

For your writing, there's your group synthesis assignment on The Great Gatsby. For this assignment you are working collaboratively in Google Classroom with your peers to present a theme shared across several excerpts of text. Be sure to review the instructions on Google Classroom for these details.

English IV

If you did not submit your humor essay today, then it will need to be done by Thursday. If not, we will grade what you have. This is a good time for you to start looking over your notes on Twelfth Night since we will quickly finish the play and move on to our final test on the play soon.

Homework for English Students - B Day - 3 January

With the one-hour early release the classes for AP are a bit off from each other. We'll be caught up by the end of next week again.

AP English III

Next class you will have your AP English Language and Composition Midterm Exam. You can't really study for it other than to review any devices that we've studied this year as well as to look at your notes around the different timed writings we have done. You will have twenty eight multiple choice questions and one essay.

The other assignment that is shared for both classes is the work on our Gatsby Synthesis assignment. In this assignment you should be working in the same document as the rest of your group. As a group you have determined a theme that is shared among all of the texts. This is stated in a shared introduction. Then, each person should import one of their texts from their annotated bibliography with annotations. This should be paired with explanation and analysis that shows how the text develops the shared theme. There should be transitions to the next person's text. At the end, there is a shared group conclusion. This assignment is due on Tuesday. You'll receive group and individual grades for this work.

3B - Since you all had a full class today you should begin to read and annotate "The Over Soul" by Ralph Waldo Emerson for homework. We'll begin to work through this piece on Tuesday of next week. Remember, he's defining a concept. Stay focused on seeing how he explains what exactly the OverSoul is.

4B - Since you all only spent thirty minutes with us we did not have time to begin the unit. I will give you Emerson to read after the midterm on Friday.

English IV

Today, we had a pretty productive class despite the excitement of the shortened day. We began our reading of Twelfth Night, Act III and then made some more progress on our short writing assignment comparing Twelfth Night to She's the Man. Before next class, spend some time planning out your essay so before the end of next period you have a workable draft to submit for feedback. This is the last significant assignment of this semester, so make sure you are doing well with it! Have a good day, and see you soon!

B-Day Student Homework - 9/16/2014

AP English III

Tonight for homework you should spend time reviewing and rereading "The Over Soul" so that you are prepared for our discussion of this piece on Thursday.  Also, make sure that you are filling up your vocabulary bookmark with new words and definitions.  We will soon move on to the second portion of this assignment which is the word study.

English II

Tonight you need to prepare yourselves for your quiz.  Study and review what we've been going over in class as these questions and texts will be part of your quiz on Wednesday/Thursday.

Homework for the Weekend - B Day Students - 9/12/2014

AP English III

This weekend you have a very difficult piece to read and annotate, due to its difficulty we will not be working on this piece until Thursday the 18th.  I would like, however, for all of you to have given this piece one solid attempt before Tuesday's class because we will be touching on it and may have the chance to start asking questions.

Your task is to read Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The Over Soul" and annotate the text.  Your annotations will likely be focused around asking questions of the text because it is wordy and complex, especially in terms of the sentence length and complexity.  As you read, use the rhetorical modes to help you.  Remember that this piece is centered around Emerson clarifying a concept - look for definition and exemplification.  Try to come out of this piece understanding what the Over Soul is to Emerson.  It may be helpful to consider connections to The Grapes of Wrath as Steinbeck is thoroughly influenced by Emerson, think especially of Ma and Jim Casy.

English II

Your task for the weekend is the same as the A-day students.  Complete your poetry study of your favorite song or the other poem that was on the back of your copy of "In Praise of Feeling Bad About Yourself."  Remember to work through all parts of the VLSITFT model and apply these ideas to your favorite song.

Homework for 9/18/2013 - A Day Classes

Students!  I hope that your Wednesday has been as wonderful as mine!  Lots of stimulating conversation in my AP classes and some amazing progress in our Russian speaking ability in class too!  Keep moving forward!  Never stay still!

AP English III

Tonight you have two key tasks to prepare you for our class on Friday.  First, I would like for you to read an annotate the excerpted version of The Grapes of Wrath which I gave you in class.  The text is from my own copy so you can see how I annotate a text.  As you work through the four excerpts, I want you to "find the Over Soul" -- How do you see Emerson's philosophy reflected by the characters and scenes I've given you.  Focus on the five essential elements of Transcendentalism as well as our discussion to get you through this.

In addition, you need to read Henry David Thoreau's "Where I Lived and What I Lived For" which is in 50 Essays or available at this link.  Remember to use this as an outgrowth of our discussion of Emerson.  How is Thoreau living the philosophy?  Where are some issues related to practicality?

I look forward to another hearty discussion on Friday!

Russian I

Tonight you need to all practice your reading, writing, and phonics.  Practice the lines in your skit.  If you're still having trouble with the alphabet - then continue to study that.  Your test is coming next week!  You need to be ready.  If you're having serious trouble, then come see me so that I can help.  Remember, I can't learn it for you.  You've got to do it for yourself.

Homework for Monday - 9/16/2013

AP English III

By next class all of you should have finished Emerson's "The Over Soul" and have thorough annotations to take you through the piece.  As you read, continue to mark vocabulary and add to your bookmarks.  I'm looking forward to our seminar on Wednesday; remember that participation comes through both asking and answering questions!

Russian I

Next class we will continue to work on phonetics related to consonants and voicing rules.  For tonight, you should complete your worksheet on the different cities in Russia and the handwriting practice.  Continue researching your city if you need to.  Next class we will start writing scripts for our presentations.

Quite the Day Today. 9/12/2013

Today was quite the day at Jordan High School.  I don't know where all of you evacuated to during third period, but I want to say a special thanks to my 3A Russian class for staying together, staying calm, and following instructions.  Спасибо!  AP Students, this update is especially important for all of you.

AP English III

With today's evacuation we did not have fourth period so Monday's class is going to become Wednesday's class to make sure that all students are in the same place in the calendar.  You should still put in and hopefully finish "The Over Soul" this weekend.  The extra day will be great for you to review it before class and to write down any questions which you're going to ask in class during our seminar.  You've also got some time to work on your vocabulary bookmarks.  I will want to collect one of those from you soon, be sure to go through Emerson thoroughly as he's got a highly elevated diction in his writing.

If you need the link to the article, see last class's post.  If you need a paper copy, please see me tomorrow to collect one.  4A - You will get your essays back on Monday and we will have today's class then.  2A - We will have an enrichment day on Monday.  I look forward to that with you.  It may also give us a chance to read a bit more together.

If you have any questions, please come see me tomorrow.

Russian I

I want all of you to think of this first quiz as a challenge.  Even if you did very well, there are still places where all of you can improve.  Focus on reviewing your handwriting very thoroughly as we go through the weekend.  We will begin with a speaking and culture activity on Monday and Tuesday.  I wanted to give 3A the handout today, but we were busy evacuating and not only did I leave my phone and car keys in the classroom, I left your handouts too.  I'll get these to you tomorrow morning during our short time together (see below).

To those of you who did not perform as well as you had hoped on the quiz, I especially want you to practice and study and review.  Remember that language needs to be experienced daily.  Over the weekend, it's your job to expose yourself to Russian!  Write your name, review your alphabet, listen to recordings as you look at your handouts and notes.  Remember that I'm also available during some lunches, before and after school for help and to review.

Here's that film we watched today in class.  I hope that you all enjoyed the beauty of Moscow.  Those of you in 3A - you're among the few people who know why I don't chew gum.  Congratulations.

All Students

Mr. Leathers will be calling tonight about tomorrow's schedule.  We are starting with 3A and then going to our normal schedule.  This will allow you to collect any belongings you left behind.  We will be in 3A only for 10 minutes.
