Today we spent a lot of time working on vocabulary, and we started to get into reading for us. Always a fun thing to do in class. Continue to review your vocabulary skills and apply these skills as you are working and reading in the world around you. You may find that you know a lot more words than you think! All you have to do is break them up!
AP English III
With the fact that the world exploded this morning and got all over us, we didn't have the chance to do our essay drafting workshop today. No worries, this will now happen on Wednesday! Be sure that you have a hard copy of your draft, and your outline (redone and original) if you plan to resubmit for a new grade. This is the main task for Wednesday. Your other Wednesday task is to bring in your copy of In Cold Blood and review Section IV. Don't forget to take some time to update your back cover annotations too.
On Friday you have FIVE vocabulary cards due. You've already done one - apply the feedback to make it perfect if it isn't already, and then do four more. Get into the habit of having five cards due every two weeks (aka - they're due when we have class on a Friday!)

Homework the Weekend - A Day - 7 September 2018
AP English III
Today
we talked about arguments in section III of In Cold Blood. For homework this weekend you have three things to
focus on. First, complete 5 vocabulary notecards. These vocabulary words come
from your vocabulary bookmarks. Choose five words (from In Cold Blood, Didion, Ericsson, or the AP Multiple Choice). On the
front side of the card put the word, sentence in which you found it, page
number (not necessary if you chose it from AP multiple choice), other forms of
the word (verb, noun, adjective, etc.), and its etymology. Google is one of
your best resources for finding the prefix/root/suffix. THIS is
also a helpful website. One the back of the card, you should put your own
definition and synonyms (explain any difference between the definitions!). Remember
– 5 cards on Tuesday, they will be checked for completion.
The
second part for homework this weekend is to revise your outlines. Ms. Coco will
be available Monday before and after school, as well as A lunch if you have any
questions. Mr. Miller will be back on Tuesday. You can always email either/both
of us as well if you have any questions.
Finally,
work on your rough draft of your In Cold
Blood essay. You should have ½ of the rough draft done by Thursday, Sept.
13. Come to class with a printed copy so we can have a writing workshop.

Homework for A-Day - 5 September 2018
AP English III
Sorry that we didn't get to touch on the outlines that you built around Section II of In Cold Blood. Please hang on to this work as we will likely take a look at it next class or next week as we spend time working on outlining and writing skills. Today you all got some great direct instruction in writing an argument, particularly on structure, organization, and thesis/argument statement writing. Start to apply this now to your outlines. Begin the revision process.
Next week will will have a rough draft workshop - more instructions will come on this Friday and Tuesday. You should work through half of your outline and turn it into a rough draft. To me, it makes most sense to do your introduction paragraph with your argument as well as a topic or two of the body.
Next class we'll be focused on Section III of In Cold Blood. Be sure that you have updated your vocabulary bookmarks with words from Sections I, II, and III - have pages numbers and synonyms. We'll be going on to the next phase of vocabulary work on Friday, and you'll need full bookmarks to do that.

31 August - Homework for the Weekend - A Day
We're done with August and done with the first week of school! Hooray! See the information below as you prepare for our next class.
AP English III
In class as we were leaving I handed out the questions to go along with Section II of In Cold Blood. Over the weekend, I would like for you to outline your response to ONE of these questions. I direct you to certain parts of the text in the questions - use those areas as a starting point. Remember that at its core an outline is a plan. We should be able to read your outline and have an understanding of what your answer will be and how you will use evidence to clarify and explain that answer. You are outlining a response of around a paragraph in length.
Further, there's a piece called "The Ways We Lie" by Stephanie Ericsson that I would like for you to read and annotate. It's available in some editions of 50 Essays and at this link. As you are reading, pay attention to the idea of honesty versus lies. Is Capote using any of these "lies" in his text? Are any of the characters? How does this piece help us to better investigate the idea of author credibility in the text?
Lastly, this weekend your scores for the Summer Outline will be populated into PowerSchool. Remember that you will have the chance to resubmit this work as we go through our writing and revising process. Class on Wednesday will focus on proper outlining procedures and expectations, so the revisions will begin then!

Ms. Coco and I were very happy to see how engaged you all were today in class as we worked through Langston Hughes. Next class we're going to continue reading and spend a lot of time focused on vocabulary learning.
For tonight, we are going to stay focused on learning about ourselves and telling others about ourselves. For this, find a song that you think represents you well. Bring in the lyrics or the song itself (YouTube video, website, recording) to show us how the song connects to you. If the song is not in English, translate a bit so that we can understand.

Our main goal for next class is to work through Sections I and II of In Cold Blood. Be sure that you have reviewed your annotations in these sections and prepared your vocabulary bookmarks for these sections too. 27 August - Homework - A Day
Welcome back to Jordan High for the 2018-2019 year! I'm so happy to be back to teaching and learning with you all in Room 301. Here are your reminders and announcements to get you going into our next class on Wednesday.

Today was a wonderful day where we all got to know each other just a bit and we began to work on some of the important work in our class, like how words are built to create meaning. Next class we'll keep working with these new vocabulary skills as well as with a poem related to our opening theme.
For tonight, be sure that you've completed your Parent Contact Sheet - you'll want to turn that in to us next class. Then, take some time to think and make a list of about five things that are important parts of your identity. Try to make these specific to you. Don't just say "cooking" but think of an item that you like to cook more than any other. What does that say about who you are as a person?

Today we had a great opening class in which we reviewed the class policies and procedures, you turned in your summer assignments, and you've already received some grades as well! Ms. Coco and I will be working hard to score your summer work and return it to you in a timely fashion, likely later this week or at the beginning of next. Remember that you can resubmit most of your summer work for new scores after you've learned the new expectations related to writing, outlining, and annotating.
For tonight, your main goal is to complete your paperwork (Contact Sheet/Honor Code) as well as complete the reading of "Keeping a Notebook" by Joan Didion. I was very happy with how class went today. Everyone came ready to focus and discussion was very lively. Let's keep this momentum going as we move through the rest of the semester! We will be finishing our unit on the Canterbury Tales very soon, so if there is any work you have missing, be sure to turn it in as soon as you can. We'll be working a little more with the Canterbury Tales, before finishing up the unit with a test and a final writing assignment. Remember that all missing and redone work needs to be complete by the time we give the final unit exam. Have a great weekend!

Remember that on Monday you will be taking a quiz on Acts I and II of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. For the quiz, you will be expected to answer multiple choice questions, perform quotation identification, and write free responses. Use your time wisely this weekend to study Acts I and II. As far as your In Cold Blood essays go, final drafts are now due on Wednesday, October 11. Mr. Miller and I have opened up some more slots for writing conferences, and highly encourage you to come see us for help. Many of you have already done this, and can vouch for their usefulness. Have a great weekend, look forward to seeing all of you on Monday!

Homework for B Day Students - 21 September

Remember that on Monday, we will go to the computer lab to finish our "Me You Don't See" essays and turn them in to be graded. If you haven't already checked on your draft in Google Classroom, make sure you do before Monday to see and respond to Mr. Bernhard's comments. Try to respond to these as soon as you can, so on Monday we are able to finish the drafts quickly.
Although we got some good work done, today's class meeting could have been more productive; we can always improve at staying on task and following directions. Before next class, mentally prepare to finish the Creative Writing part of the Canterbury Tales character project and get a good start on the Professional Writing portion. Have a great weekend, and arrive on Monday ready to work!

Great job today grinding away at the timed writing prompt. Writing good essays in such a small amount of time is challenging, but you will be very well prepared come AP Exam season in May. - Once you enroll you'll see the Quick Argumentative Outline Assignment. Create a Google Doc, give your argument on the prompt, at least one topic with evidence and explanation, and a clear refutation with evidence and explanation.
- Turn in the assignment when you're done.
Additionally, bring your copies of In Cold Blood on Thursday if you would like a new grade for annotations on the text. If you have any resubmissions to turn in, those should come in too.
Remember that you will have a rough draft workshop on Wednesday, not Monday. This is a change.

Today was such a productive day! We've got some of the big conceptual understandings now about how to approach argumentative writing. Remember that over the weekend you have a major task - the revision of your outlines. All revised outlines should be turned in no later than Thursday the 21st. This is so that we can give you feedback to develop rough drafts. As you revise follow the steps:

- Edit your argument so that it passes the DADS test. It's gotta be Debatable, Analytical, Defensible, and Specific!
- Reorganize your textual support around clear and specific topics. Generate topic sentences that explain the connection to your argument.
- Develop a refutation from the evidence in the text.
- Explain all of your evidence in the context of your argument. Show how this relates and why it is important.
You have everything you need to improve your standing (aka revising outlines and questions) in this class and in your approach to writing. It's time to get it done.
Also, read Eudora Welty's "Listening" for class on Tuesday. There's a link to the article here. As you read, annotate the piece to discover what Welty's argument is.

Take a look at the feedback and comments that Mr. Bernhard and I have put on your assignments and address those as well as the rubric as you work on resubmitting the In Cold Blood questions. We will continue to work on other elements of improved composition throughout the year.
Other homework for the weekend is vocabulary. I would like for you to take five words from either your AP practice sets, the articles we've been reading, or In Cold Blood and complete vocabulary cards for these. If you need guidance on how to complete a vocabulary card - see this document for instructions. The link should open a Google Document with instructions and an example. Account for all parts of the card. Use appropriate online resources. You can submit your cards via Google Slides shared to me (daniel_miller (at) dpsnc (dot) net), on index cards, or on paper. Homework for B-Day Students: 6 September 2016
AP English III
Tonight you have a few things to complete to prepare for our next class meeting. First, please read and annotate Stephanie Erickson's "The Ways We Lie". It is available in the first edition of 50 Essays or at this link. As you read, pay attention to the way that Erickson sections her piece and the way that she uses definitions in her article. You may also want to consider how this piece relates to Didion and Capote, especially as regards their idea of truth and lies.
Following that, make sure that you have reviewed Section III of In Cold Blood as well as the vocabulary for that section on your sheet. We'll be working on the vocabulary in earnest next class in the computer lab.

Tonight for homework we have some writing to do and some planning to do. Please follow the instructions on your assignment sheet to review the prompt and to then complete the planning on the front. You should then use the back of the sheet to draft your response. This will allow me and Ms. McCormick to understand where you're starting as a writer this year.

Homework for B-Day Students: 1 September 2016
Happy birthday to my Oma! I'm calling her right after I finish writing this. Here are your reminders for the long weekend in which we celebrate the Labor movement (go workers!) and my birthday!
English II
There's nothing for you to complete this weekend - if you were newly added to class, please complete your forms. If you are interested in learning more about the Holocaust and other genocides around the world, the US Holocaust Memorial and Museum has some really great resources. See their website at https://www.ushmm.org/learn.
On Tuesday we'll start watching our film and work more with new vocabulary.

This weekend we're going to continue reviewing Capote's text and do some close study of new vocabulary from the text. On Tuesday, we'll be discussing Section II of the text - "Persons Unknown" as well as getting to Didion. To prepare, review your annotations and maybe reannotate some passages based on our very wonderful discussions today.
Also, you have your vocabulary for the book to begin to study. As you look over the list, follow the instructions on the bottom to work through this assignment. Find the context, decide the meaning, investigate the structure isolate any known word parts (including prefixes, roots, and suffixes - morphemes of all types). I highly suggest working in that order. We'll start to investigate them as a class on Tuesday and work with some very productive ones from the list.

Tonight we have two things to complete to prepare for our next class. First, make sure that you have reviewed In Cold Blood - section one "The Last to See Them Alive". As you are reviewing, consider your annotations. You may see something that you missed before, mark it now. Secondly, we have our article by Joan Didion called "On Keeping a Notebook" which is found at this link.
Please read the article. Take notes on paper or print the article and annotate it. Be sure to organize your notes by paragraph numbers. As you read, consider the questions we discussed at the end of class today:
1. Why does Didon write? Why does Capote write? Are their goals similar or different? How?
2. Does art have to be true? Can there be numerous kinds of truths?
Outside of this - have your parent contact form and your honor code pledge.

Don't forget to complete your parent contact form and to get your supplies for this class. After that, remember our key question from today: What happens when there is no respect in the world? Try to consider this as a jumping off point for Thursday's class.
