Homework for Thanksgiving Break - B Day

AP Lit

No homework to assign over break except to rest, relax, and recover. I hope that you all enjoyed today's class and meeting The Underground Man. I would highly recommend reviewing Part One (especially if you didn't read too carefully) since you'll understand a lot more of him after today's class.

Next week we'll work through Part II. The assessment on this novel will happen on 11 December - It'll be another Question 3. Don't forget to complete the survey below to give your feedback on the most recent unit! I've also posted on Google Classroom the play An Evening with Dostoevsky (it's in Russian) to give you an idea of The Underground Man. This play is a one-man show based on Notes from Underground - so even if you don't understand Russian, you can get a good idea of who this guy is.

If you didn't complete your vocabulary card I'll take it next week!

AP Research

This is the major push time everyone! It's time to put together all of the pieces for IRB approval next week. This is your major goal. In order to pass IRB you will need the DPS Proposal Form complete as it applies to your study. You will also need to have any consent forms and method tools like surveys and questions prepared. I would compile everything into one space and share that with Dr. Spencer. Her email is julie_spencer [at] dpsnc.net.

Outside of this you should start writing. Complete your outline documents and then start writing it all up. Use Manzanar as a model for this work. Use your templates too. If you have more of this content written now, it makes the work ahead even easier!

Enjoy Thanksgiving Break!

There are no assignments for you to complete over Thanksgiving Break! I hope that you all enjoy the time with family and friends away from school. I would suggest finding time every day to work on and review your grammar and vocabulary skills while you're away. Spend time with Duolingo or with your vocabulary/grammar skills from your textbook.

Be aware that we will have a test on Chapter One on 12/6. When we return from break we'll prepare for this test and keep learning some of our cases in Russian grammar.

Homework for the Weekend - B Day - 22 November

Lots of absences today with good reason. Remember to check Google Classroom for the slides and handouts.

AP Literature

Howdy y'all! Здравствуйте всем! Today we learned a lot about St. Petersburg, Russian culture and history, as well as a good introduction to our narrator and also the author of our text (note - these are not the same person).

If you were absent you should review the slides and handout before you read Part One. You are not required to annotate this text - it's confusing and hard to follow; I've read it seven times and I still get lost - so your annotations are going to be a bit different. Remember that the first part of this text is a monologue. Read and write questions to this narrator. Tie the questions to page numbers or Chapters so that we can all get to the same place in the text.

Don't forget the form below, test corrections on The Stranger, Part 1, and to enjoy the reading this weekend. See you on Tuesday! Remember that the text is linked in previous posts.

AP Research

I really enjoyed our conferences today and the clarification that you were able to bring to our conversations. If we didn't conference today, then we will on Tuesday. A lot of you were absent today, so we'll talk Tuesday. Over the weekend, it's important that you work to complete any of these questions to add specificity to your method and research proposal.

Over the weekend, complete the Method Outline form. Be sure that you're working through all the parts of this element of your paper. Having this done will lead you to a much easier time when writing the paper. Additionally, complete as much as you can of the DPS proposal. Be sure that all of your supporting documents and tools are with it so that you can pass IRB.

See you next week for our super short week!

Today in class we finished our review of the cities in Russia and then we had time for our verb quiz reassessment. If you weren't in class today, you can complete the reassessment at home or with me. Just remember that if you want to redo the vocabulary score, then you'll have to do that with me.

Over the weekend finish your work on Prepositional Case by completing the exercise on page 53. Read the sentence and make the needed change so that you can show prepositional case. Next week we'll learn a new case!

Advanced Russian

Today in class we took our spelling quiz on numbers before we ordered some groceries in Russian to practice our dialogue skills and our number skills. I liked what you all were doing because you're showing growth in your skills. Keep working and studying and you will keep growing. Next week we'll have a short week - so it's time to review our skills before we move on.

Complete your exercises related to your new grammar topics. Russian II should complete exercises in Chapter 5 - numbers 12, 15, and 16. Russian III should complete exercises in Chapter 8 - numbers 7, 8, and 11. Russian IV should read the section of Chapter 11 on Participles and complete the guided notes.

Homework for B-Day Students: 20 November

AP Lit

Today in class we had an assessment - Multiple Choice and then our essay on The Stranger. Remember that the questions on the assessment asking about poetry and poetry reading skills will not be part of your assessment, they were more of a pre-test to see our skills before we get into poetry next.

Tonight, be sure that all of your work from this unit is complete and turned in. If you're seeing anything missing in PowerSchool, be sure that the work is to us by the end of the week. We'll be starting with Fyodor Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground next class. I've shared a link on Google Classroom to a copy of the text if you choose not to purchase it for yourself.

AP Research

It's time for revising y'all! Now that we've gone further into method, I invite you to look back at your work on your proposals to tighten up and specify your work. Today we were focused on developing, clarifying, and defining a specific method for your specific question. This was a way for me to provide feedback to all of you on your method section of your draft proposal. Tonight you should take a look at the questions and the work that we have done today. What questions can you answer? What clarity can you provide? What can you do to make sure that your method is workable to others? Have you clearly defined all of your tools to complete your method?

It's important that everything aligns. Can you draw a straight line through all of the parts of your proposal? Make changes, make updates and edits. We'll conference on Friday about your proposals.

Russian 1

Today in class was all about reviewing everything we've done. We conjugated verbs, applied prepositional case, and we worked through a review of our cities. Next class we'll finish our review of the cities and then we will have our retake of our quiz on verb conjugation. Be prepared for that! Study and review. Know how to use the word wall as a resource. If you need additional help, let's meet up at lunch this week!

Advanced Russian

Today in class was all about time. Telling time. Working with time expressions. Understanding that numbers don't really change, but they cause a lot of changes around them. I hope that as we are practicing daily you're getting better and stronger with using and navigating our use of numbers.

For tonight we have our exercise on translation. Read through the letter in English. Find what you can translate related to time expressions and work through those translations. Use the notes and work we did with filling in the blanks.

This is a great way to prepare for your quiz on numbers next class. It's a spelling quiz, so, can you spell and translate your numbers?

Homework for Monday - 11/18 - B Day

AP Literature

We had our final work with The Stranger today in class as well as a circle discussion to review some of our main themes and takeaways from the novel. I was really happy to see you all in the circle room as you tried something new, listened and respected each other, and you all engaged in creative and critical discussion about the novel. Молодец! Wonderful! All of this discussion is key in preparing for Q3 next class - Hopefully you see the connection to the various themes.

Tonight you should spend some time at AP Classroom. Look at your Unit 1 MCQ - What did you get wrong? Why did you get it wrong? Why is the correct answer the better answer? Be sure that you're looking at the specific verbs and adjectives/adverbs - that's usually the difference between better and best.

Prepare for Q3 (The FRQ) by reviewing your annotations. Checking in on your back covers and understanding connections between those elements is key. Also, be sure to look at the practice we did in class related to Q3.

Lastly - we'll start Dostoevsky on Friday. Get yourself a copy of the novel - or save the link here for a copy of it. Remember, no matter how you read, you are still expected to annotate. We'll be reading this book fast - it's a quick read.

AP Research

Today was a workday for all of us. I was reviewing your proposals and you were working with each other or on your own. I'm planning to sit with you at the beginning of next week to go through your proposals and address feedback. As you are working this week, don't forget that we have a new reflection posted.

I would highly suggest that you all spend the time that you need this week working through your method. Do you have a firm understanding of what data you need to collect and how you are going to get it? How are you taking these generalized methods and making them specific to your question and study?

You'll have the chance to recoup your points this week if you missed any. Please review your work as it is returned to you. I'll hopefully have them all returned to you on Google Classroom by the end of tomorrow.

Today in class we finished the first part of Doctor Zhivago and did a bit of review on prepositional case. Next class we'll review prepositional case even more. Be sure that you've finished the exercise where you use the verb "to live" and change the location into prepositional case. Take this time to learn this pattern so that you know it for the rest of this class.

Advanced Russian

We went to the grocery store today to learn about Russian habits related to food. We also spent our time using numbers in a variety of ways to talk about quantities and the cost of things. Fun times! Over the weekend you should all be focused on learning your numbers both in terms of how to spell them and how to use them. I hope that our work together today was helpful in reminding you of the key patterns when using numbers.

Focus as well on genitive case - we use it a lot when working with numbers. Next week we'll keep working with numbers as we learn more about telling time and dates next week.

Homework for the Weekend - B Day - 14 November

AP Lit

Today in class we had a great time discussing elements of rationality and irrationality in the text and the way in which they are connected to some of the major themes of this novel. Are there ways that these ideas also connect to some of our philosophies as well?

From there we spent the great majority of class preparing for our assessment on The Stranger. Next week you'll have our Unit Multiple Choice Practice as well as the Free Response. The free response essay will be a Question 3 and you'll be expected to use The Stranger for your response.

For tonight, construct your book card for The Stranger. Read Chapter 5. Be ready for our final class on The Stranger in which we'll make a circle and some big discussions.

AP Research

Today we had an assessment followed by working time. I was happy with what I saw on the assessment. If you missed something, it was probably because you were confusing unethical practices with poor method design. Remember that if we're working in the spirit of ethics, we are doing what is needed. There are some issues that we can't correct, but we need to be able to explain them clearly.

Tonight your first priority is to complete your DRAFT proposals. Submit that to Google Classroom so that I can read and review. After that, it's time to start constructing the pieces for your beast. Think about your method. Conference with your peer. Log your work and conferences! Think about your consent forms and instruments. Keep grinding away!

Today in class we started our work with cases. We're focusing on learning the PREPOSITIONAL CASE first because the changes are pretty straightforward and easy to track and see. Tonight, practice with this first case by completing the exercise given to you. Look at the question. Write your answer using the verb жить - to live. Be sure to put the word in the parenthesis in the PREPOSITIONAL CASE by changing the ending.

Remember that we'll have our verb quiz reassessment next week. Review and study - let me know what you may need.

Advanced Russian

Today in class was all about numbers, the genitive case, and vocabulary! Lots of new words and information today in class, so we'll be working with it over the next few days. Begin to learn the numbers and the questions/prepositions used with them. Tonight, your homework is pretty basic. Learn the numbers. Learn how to say them. Write them. Use them. The more that you do, the better you will learn.

Complete the three exercises on the sheet I gave you today in class. Write out all numbers as words. Be sure that you are focused on learning the spelling and the pronunciation of the words. We'll be playing with numbers all this week!

AP English Literature 11/12

AP English Literature
We had a great class detecting theme changes in Part 1 and 2 of The Stranger. I some of us were confused about how to analyze why meanings change or how they change and that is OKAY. We are just getting started with high-level analysis and this will only make us grow as readers and writers.
I appreciate that we all put our best feet forward today and worked with such a complex novel.

Homework:
Read Chapter 4 Part 2 of The Stranger- Make note of a memorable scene from Parts 1 and/or 2 that you may use to answer an essay question. (You can even think of more than one...but make sure you at least have one in mind!)
And, a few reminders:
1. Show annotations to me or Mr. Miller this week.
2. Please make-up your unit test this week if you have not already!
3. Next Wednesday: MCQ and FRQ test!

Have a great night and stay dry!

AP Research Homework - 12 November

AP Research

Today in class we were a bit rushed for time because of the early release schedule. We'll plan to finish any remaining conferences next class, so please be ready if you have not yet crossed that threshold.

Tonight your main task is to finish your DRAFT proposal. It should be submitted by the end of this week to Google Classroom. Next class we will have our ethical dilemmas assessment. You'll be able to use your notes that you have taken in this unit to help you. Remember that these issues don't necessarily have right or wrong answers (well, sometimes they do). The important thing is to always make sure that we are working in consideration of any ethical implications, even those that don't affect us right now.

The weekly reflection has also been posted. As always, reach out if you need anything.

Homework for the Weekend - 8 November - A Day

AP Research

Today we had our workday on our proposals as well as time to finish our conferences related to where we are so far. As you are working this weekend it's important to finish your DRAFT proposals. Remember that all work related to your proposals (including surveys, interview questions, consent forms) should be in your PROPOSAL FOLDER so that you can easily share with Dr. Spencer for review.

The newest reflection question is posted in Google Classroom, as are the slides. Enjoy the long weekend! Be sure that you are documenting all of the work that you are doing in your PREP folders and in the documents.

Russian I

Today in class we had an assessment on verbs and conjugation as well as a bit of vocabulary. From what I saw, I think that a lot of you need to spend time with your vocabulary lists this weekend. Make a way to study the words. Write them. Say them. Use them when you can! Try to listen to Russian music and catch these words when they're used by others. The more you use these words, the better you'll remember them.

Next week we're getting into the really difficult part of Russian grammar. It's going to require some memorization. Be sure that you are studying and reviewing every night. Remember that if you didn't finish your project today in class that it should be done ASAP and turned in on Google Classroom.

Advanced Russian

This weekend gives you a great opportunity to get working on your projects and to review anything that was difficult from the quiz we took today in class. I'll have these back to you next week - after that you can resubmit what you would like.

For the projects, remember that we have different projects for the different groups. Russian II students should find a text (I recommend a song, poem, or short story) and then analyze different examples of aspect being used. You'll pull out sentences and then analyze how aspect is being used and why. This is paired with a small artistic component. Share the text with me for points!

Russian III and IV - You get to make a presentation on any choice of Russian culture. Maybe you like science, maybe it's fashion or art or music. Whatever your interest is - that what you should explore for us. The goal is about a five minute presentation in a mixture of English and Russian.

The vocabulary for this weekend is NUMBERS! Russian II should learn from zero to twenty. Russian III should learn up to 1,000. Russian IV can go to 1,000,000. Next week we're focusing in on numbers since it's a place where we can all work together for a bit!

Homework for the Weekend - B Day - 7 November

AP Literature

Today in class we had a lot of great work going on related to themes and the way that they are developed through a text. We really enjoyed seeing the work that you did and the questions that you developed related to this text.

Tonight/This Weekend there's Chapter 3. Be sure that you're looking at the themes, topics, motifs, and Mersault. What's changing? How is it changing? Why is the change important?

If your tests or annotations are missing, be sure that they are complete by the end of the week. Any missing projects should also be turned in this week to be considered on-time. We'll hopefully have everything back to you next week.

AP Research

Today we had our next ethical dilemma as well as our work with the DRAFT proposal form (simple really is better). I enjoyed having the opportunity to conference with you today. If we didn't talk today, then we'll talk on Tuesday. The ethical dilemma assessment will fall on Thursday!

Be sure that you are updating your PREP folder as we are working in this unit. Your expert adviser research should go in Weekly Work; there should also be the Planning Out the Work document that should be updated daily. Today, if we conferenced, be sure to log that in the conferences folder.

The proposal folder should also be populated. There's the DPS proposal form, copies of any questions or surveys, consent forms, and the DRAFT form.

Today in class we reviewed the way that we do conjugations for first and second type. It's an important process to learn. Be sure that you are taking a look at the process for first or second and then to learn the endings that are connected to each person.

Use the slides to remind yourself of the process. Use Duolingo to review too. I'm available for extra help if you need it. We also have exercises for practice too.

Next class we have our quiz on verb conjugation types and our city projects are due. Be ready for these assignments!

Advanced Russian

It was all about using the language today in class so that we could accomplish some key goals. It's really all about vocabulary right now - because knowing some of our key words and phrases will help us to make the choices that we need to make. Be sure that you're focused on vocabulary, declensions, and conjugations as we prepare for the assessment on Friday.

The assessment will focus on vocabulary (Everyone) and then be different for the different classes after that. Russian II will be deciding on which aspect and why. Russian III and IV will be looking at new vocabulary and declensions of those new vocabulary words.

Be sure - Russian II - that you have decided on a text for your aspect project. Also be sure to look over your exercises and your notes to review. If you have questions on exercises, I'm available outside of class.

Homework for B-Day / 5 November

AP Literature

As we discovered in class today, this book isn't all gloom and doom. There's a bright side to absurdism too as it leads us to a certain amount of satisfaction with our life as it is. We recognize what we can fix and what we can't. We also learn to accept ourselves for who we are, no matter what others may say or think.

Take this with you as you go into Chapter Two. Look at how Mersault and others react to the idea of change. Why is change an important idea in this book? How could it connect to our philosophies?

Don't forget that if you missed the Part One test that it should be made up this week. We are also missing annotations from some of you. If your pop-culture/philosophy project is missing, be sure that it is complete and shared/turned in to Ms. Metcalf by the end of the week.

AP Research

Today was all about making sure that we work with a mind on making the most ethical choices that we can given the limitations that we face. Remember that this class is a process and that it will reveal a lot of moments for us to reflect on the work that we have done so far. Take this time to reflect. Have you checked for ethics in your BoK? How about your expert advisers? Are you asking the right questions? Are you citing everything?

Next class we're going to have a workshop on method and development of the method. I'll also be conferencing with each of you about your work so far this quarter - be ready for our conversation!

Homework for Monday - A Day - 4 November

Welcome to Q2! We're going to keep the party going as we move toward our breaks in this quarter of the year.

AP Research

Today we had a very thorough lesson on ethics as it pertains to designing our method and making sure that we always work with ethics in mind. I've posted today's slides as well as the TEDxVictoria talk on ethics and honesty in research/science.

These issues are all important for us to consider as we develop our means of completing our research and fill out our proposal to Durham Public Schools. Remember that part of submitting our work to outside review is to ensure that we are working ethically.

Tonight, prepare for our workday next class. I'm going to sit down and speak with you about your expert advisers. Are you prepared for that conversation? Are you completing your proposal? Are you making decisions with justification? We should be working and chipping away regularly - that's how we will get this finished!

Russian I

Today in class we reviewed the process for completing First and Second Conjugation! Now we know a lot about how to work with verbs. Remember that we either drop ть or we drop it like it's hot. Then we add the ending. Remember the key questions:

1. Who is doing the action?
2. Is it first or second or a mutant?
3. If you know these questions you can do the conjugation.

To review tonight we have an exercise focused on just second conjugation and then a mixed one! Do what you can and be ready for another help session! We'll have our quiz on Friday.

Advanced Russian

Today in class we were working all together to review the essentials of aspect and then we split to look at our individual topics in more depth. Remember that there will be a quiz on Friday related to new vocabulary (Russian III and IV) and key words related to aspect (Russian II). Start preparing now for this quiz.

Tonight you should continue to work through exercises to practice with your skills. Russian IV and III have exercises on paper. Russian II are on page 215. Be sure that you find the key words to choose the aspect, then use the list of verbs to find the right verb and put it in its proper form. Don't forget - lose the coin toss - show me your work!

Next class we're going to the post office! Be ready!
