Homework for the Weekend - B Day - 12 March 2020

AP Literature

Today in class we had a day for group work. First we completed our review of Act 3, Scene 4 via a translation into a more modern context. From there, we went into our Sonnet Group Presentations in order to prepare for the final presentations on 3/24 and 3/26. Please be sure that you have downloaded and shared the templates amongst your group. The project is due by 3/23.

Over the weekend, prepare for your assessment on Act II, III, and Sonnets. There are also vocabulary cards due. This also is a great weekend to get ahead on your reading for the Companion Novel Assignment.

Stay safe! Stay sanitized! I'm sorry that our field trip was cancelled, I'll have refunds to you as soon as I can.

Today was a day to kick-off Unit 5. This unit's goal is for us to have ample time in class for us to finish the work that we are doing in this classroom. Remember that your paper is the key because the POD is based off of your paper. I hope that our reading of a paper today was helpful for you. The takeaways related to the METHOD/LIT REVIEW/RESULTS and connections between these sections were key. You may find it helpful to reflect on all the papers we've read today as you consider what you need moving forward. If you need another sample paper, please ask and I'll find what I can.

Tonight, complete Reflection 23. This is the end of Week 23. Tonight you should complete writing through to METHOD (perhaps revising based on what we saw today) and start to outline your RESULTS section. We'll be doing some PEER EDITING on the 18th after our next work day. Be ready!

Homework for B-Day Students -- 4 March 2020

AP Literature

Today we read and discussed various features of Sonnet 55 (including meter, scanning, caesura, assonance, enjambment, and other devices). The best way to get a handle on iambic pentameter is to memorize a perfectly metrical line and always have it ready to hand (mine is: "she is as in a field a silken tent"). Some lines in Shakespeare are not always perfect, which can affect meaning. Then you all gave me some great starts for your pitches for the sonnet projects. We will keep fine-tuning this as we go along, but I was impressed by your attention to the companion sonnets. We then began watching a different version of TN, Act 3 scene 1. This scene is pretty complicated! We did not get to discuss it in its entirety. I would like everyone to use the viewing guide to review/reread the scene, in addition to Scenes 2 and 3, for Friday. We will also talk about Sonnet 94. Be sure to annotate!!! Point out devices, key words, images, anything that stands out, and comment on what you observe. See you Friday!

Good Afternoon All! Today was a day to begin our conferences and our check on data check. We will finish these on Friday with Mr. Ellison leading the conversation. I want to remind all of you that you are having your first PREP Check this weekend. I'll be looking at four folders for documentation. These are as follows:

1. Research Records - I should see data sets here. Even if they are blank, they should be here.
2. Records of Communication - Participants and Expert Advisers should be logged here.
3. Weekly Work - 21 Reflections. Task Log updated to most recent tasks.
4. Assessment Task Drafts - A draft through the method section.

Homework for B-Day Students - 2 March 2020

AP Literature

Today we watched and discussed Twelfth Night 2.5. We discussed complexities in Malvolio's character and the various ways in which the comedy functions (physical, props, wordplay). We also talked about some strategies for comparing sonnets. Pitches Wednesday! Be sure to see the final slide to review your homework before next class. Read and be ready for that!

Today was our day to start to talk about DATA! And I don't mean the android from Star Trek. Today we started to build our data tables - think about our organization - and consider how to make our data digestible to our readers (bite-sized). Take all of this forward as you're working this weekend. Remember that as we work we are building the next section of our paper - RESULTS.

I've posted Reflection 21 for you to complete. Remember that you should also check in on your previous POD Questions. Next week I'll be checking your PREP Folders for your first check - have everything ready and organized for me.

Homework for the Weekend - 27 February 2020 - B Day

AP Literature

Today was a day to focus on language and its usage in Act 2, Scene 4 as we understand some of what is going on between Orsino and Viola/Cesario. It's also an important day for us to look at the way in which comedy can be used in order to open up a text and make us question some of the actions of our characters in this play.

For tonight/the weekend there are a few things to be aware of. First, finish reading and reviewing Act 2. We'll finish our study of Scene 5 in class on Monday. Check in with your notes and viewing guides. Remember that we're combining the Act II Quiz with Act III. This is also a time to make sure that your vocabulary cards are complete for Act II. Secondly, collaborate with your group and consider your companion sonnet. Next class you'll be able to make your pitch. Lastly, take a look at Sonnet 53. What do you notice about the structure? What do you notice about the style Shakespeare uses?

Any missing assignments should be completed/submitted by Tuesday, at the latest.

Today was our day for another round of Peer Editing. Thank you for giving thoughtful feedback to your classmates and for your feedback to me about ways that we can make the class productive moving forward. We have THREE sections left in our paper. But thankfully, they'll go pretty quickly - all we need is the DATA! So, here are my suggestions for tonight:

1. Spend some time with your PREP Folder. Remember that next week I'll check them. Have updates in your required folders (Weekly Work, Research Records, Assessment Task Drafts). Also, be sure that all of your reflections are complete.

2. Work on your POD slides. Do you have slides that line up with where your paper is?

3. Get your data sets together. Next class we'll start to discuss and consider ways to represent our data for our reader/viewer. Bring in what you have, even if it's empty, so that we can build what we need!

Homework for B Day Students - 25 February 2020

AP Literature

Today was a class geared around sonnet analysis and skill as we worked through Sonnet 29 in class and then went forward with our sonnet analysis projects. Remember that in the project you should work to compare and contrast a Shakespearean sonnet with one of your own choosing. The sonnets should have something in common (theme/image/tone/idea) and some difference as well. There are roles for each people in the group.

For tonight be sure to read Act 2, Scene 5. This is the scene where the plot against Malvolio goes. Pay attention to the humor and comedy - consider the idea of comedy at someone's expense. Is it still funny? Additionally, be sure that any missing work is turned in this week so that I can update and complete the gradebook this weekend.

Be sure to see us with any questions or concerns.

AP Research

Today was our working day to prepare for our Peer Review 3.0 Day. Next class you will be expected to have a full draft of your Introduction+Literature Review and Method. Hopefully after our work on crafting Literature Reviews and the templates/requirements of a Literature Review, you feel more prepared. Check out Reflection 20 - It's a good question to use as you draft or review your draft.

Have a full copy of your draft as a hard copy or as a full document in Assessment Task Drafts.

Our next classes will focus on data analysis, data sets, and data visualization. It's time to finish our process and move on! Remember the elements of your PREP folder which should be updated as you are working.

Homework for English Students - A Day - 13 November 2017

English IV

Today, we began class with a survey from Mr. Nowak relating to college choices and your perspectives on what services the guidance office could provide students at Jordan. After that, we discussed the makings of an effective love song, and connected these traits back to Shakespeare and sonnets. We read Shakespeare's "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day," began thinking about Twelfth Night, and watched the trailer to She's the Man. Overall, we had a productive day, but I would love to see the energy level get higher as we continue to move through the quarter. For next class, jazz yourself up to work on props, costumes and ideas for our class version of Twelfth Night. Have a great week!
