AP Seminar
Today was our last full day in the library for preliminary work and research related to our IWA. Next class you'll have half the period to finish your work. Then we'll come back to class to look at a sample IWA and discuss the writing goals that we will need to accomplish for this type of essay.
Tonight you should be working hard to complete your document. Remember that I am looking for your finalized research question, your argument on this question, and the sources that you are planning to use. With each source I should have a formal citation and a reflection as to how the source will be used - this could be like what you did for your annotated bibliography, or this could be more of an outline - be sure that there's a record.
Advanced Russian
Today in class we checked in on our exercises and we took some time to work on our aspectual situations tasks. Remember that these situations should be reflective of the work that you are following in your research reports. I want to make it that most everything we're doing in class is devoted to helping us on our essays and presentations.
For tonight, be sure that you have your argument and topic sentences in English for the essay. Next class we'll have a chance to start transforming these into Russian. From there, keep working on your comic - be writing, finding vocabulary, and developing your language related to your research topics.
Lastly, finish your exercises. I want us to have a final check of these exercises on Friday. Keep studying your vocabulary - there will be a reassessment on unit vocabulary soon!
Russian I
Over the last few classes we've been focusing on our verb conjugation patterns. Hopefully you've started to learn this process and the steps for how to do a proper conjugation. If you need more review, look over page 45 so that you can see the endings and a review of the process.
Tonight, you've got homework to review this process. It's all about conjugating verbs. Complete Exercise 3 - practice conjugating the verbs отвечать / спрашивать - remember these are first conjugation verbs. Then move on to Exercise 7 - practice conjugating a first and second conjugation verb.
Remember as I said today in class - this is information you have to memorize. Work hard to know your endings.

Homework for the Weekend - 9 November - B Day
AP Seminar
Today we began the serious work of developing our questions and arguments with source material. As you are researching, it's important to keep coming back to your question. How does the source help you to further refine the question? Is this a useful source? What other perspectives should you consider?
For your assignment due on Friday I am expecting a revised question, your argument/position on the question, and then your five additional sources. Remember that you also need to include your anchor source, so I suppose I'm really looking for six clear sources. This work will be due at the end of our library session on Friday. We'll have the whole class on Wednesday in the library to continue working.
Advanced Russian
This weekend we have exercises to focus on our new skills (Russian III) or old skills (Russian II). Russian III students should complete Exercise 8.8 and 8.9 in order to practice with dates, months, and years. Be aware of how much of the date you are using - this determines what grammar you'll need to use.
Russian II students should use Exercise 5.9 as a final practice with aspect. Look at the clues in the sentence in order to determine if you need a perfective or imperfective verb. This is a good way to develop your vocabulary knowledge as well as work on your own ability to conjugate verbs. Don't forget to also spend time on the verb list on pages 202-203 - this information is key since you have some new vocabulary and conjugation patterns to learn now.
Russian I
Today was a day focused on pulling together everything we've done before now in order to move on. Based on our work, I think that we're pretty solid with possessive and subject pronouns - this is great. Now we've got to focus on learning our verb conjugations. Over the weekend I would take a look at the notes from the last few classes related to verb conjugation. You've got to memorize these endings so that you know what goes with what. Be sure to also review how to make the changes that you need to make in order to take a verb through conjugation.
There are good videos online to help with this - search for Russian verb conjugation on YouTube.
Complete your pronoun sheet for your homework. Go through the document and say who has what. Then, when you're finished, pick three verbs and conjugate them. What will you do in Russia?

B Day Homework and Reminders: 22 April 2015
AP English III
Today we had an abbreviated ending to Invisible Man, but it's all that we had time for unfortunately. For tonight, you should be working in earnest on your motif projects as well as reading the first text of our next unit related to truth and reality in art. The piece you're reading tonight is by Joan Didion and it's called "On Keeping a Notebook." It's available in 50 Essays, first edition, or at this link. Read the piece carefully and annotate. Keep an eye on the idea of truth as Didion expresses it.
In addition, remember that if you have a missing assignment from Ms. Alley then you must get in touch with her about submitting that assignment. Her email address is kta5duke (at) gmail (dot) com.
Your motif projects will be collected on Tuesday. I hope that I'll have your timed writings done by then as well.
English II
Your homework is in the post below. You should focus on either revising your argument statement so that it can earn a perfect score, or you should be working on finding evidence for your argument. Remember to think of examples or moments that prove your idea to be true. Could you use Anne's diary? Hotel Rwanda? A monument or day of remembrance that we've discussed in class? We'll be in the computer lab next class to do some research and planning.

Work over Break - AP English III and Russian I - 12/20/2013
Time for the last post of 2013! To all my students - I hope that you have a wonderful and restful break!
AP English III
As you know you have your website projects and your completion of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I'll be checking in on your websites sporadically over break, not for a grade but just to see how things are coming. Remember that I'm only an e-mail away. Feel free to drop me a question and I'll respond as quickly as I can. Anywhere I'm going to be over break will have Internet access.
Enjoy the ending of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it's hard to find a book with a happy ending in high school; this is the best that I can do.
Russian I
Over break you have two things to complete for sure, but many of you have additional tasks too. I need for all of you to be confident and sure in your abilities to decline adjectives, nouns, and pronouns in all six cases. When we return from break we will continue to move forward with our content which requires that these declensions are firm in your wheelhouse. Make flashcards of endings, drill yourself, use some of the internet resources below to help too.
You have your writing project as well as your extra credit to complete over break. The extra credit is due on the 7th/8th and the project is due on the 9th/10th. Remember that for the project you can send me as many drafts as you need to in order to get a perfect score, which all of you can attain. Use your notes! Learn your cases (notice how everything seems to come back to that). Also, use vocabulary from the course, don't rely on Google at all, many times it will give you a word which you don't know how to use yet.
Here are some good resources for help in Russian. Use these!
Master Russian - This site offers grammar outlines as well as sample exercises to quiz yourself and check your understanding. This site is exhaustive and goes over all topics all the way back to the alphabet and handwriting. This site also has a link to a java Russian keyboard so that you can type, and then copy/paste your content from the website to your word document.
Russia Today - Language - I don't know much about this site but it comes from a really good source. There are lessons and activities on this page which will help for a variety of topics. Remember to focus on the topics we've covered in class. Explore a bit if you want, but stay focused on shoring up your skills to this point!
