AP Literature
A pretty easy night tonight as you don't have much to do. Be sure that your projects are complete and that you are ready to present them this week. We can't grade your final product until you complete your presentation.
Tonight, it would be a good idea to find time to work with Camus. Get to know him by doing some preliminary research on his biography, his beliefs, and his philosophy. Jot down some notes since we'll be getting into the text next class and understanding him will help us a lot in understanding the text he's written.
Additionally, remember what I said about your recommendation letters. Be sure you have my correct email in as I do not have a Common App account with Daniel _ Miller.
AP Research
We're moving quickly to the end of the quarter and the end of our second unit. Next week we will be presenting our FIRST poster and pitch. For the poster, you need to work only through the required elements in the slides from today and your pitch is only three sentences (though filled out with details).
Don't forget to create a document in your PREP folder in the Assessment Task Drafts Folder. Go through the nine elements of an introduction and write a definition of this element and its purpose in the academic paper. This is the beginning of your introduction outline which we will continue to work through next week.
Remember that all Annotated Bibliographies should be in this week. I will be conferencing with you on Monday about your work, so be sure that what you need to have in is in.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day Students - 5 April
AP English III
I'm going to reiterate things for the good of the group before we get too far into this final quarter of the year. If you were expecting me to be easier or more lenient as we approach the end, then you were mistaken. I will ease up after we finish the AP Exam. Not before. There are some of you missing research papers still. This is a bad place to be. Some of you did not do well on the break quiz - I hope you've saved some rubles. It's important to finish strong. Not to crawl over the line. If you need help, you need to ask for it. With all that said, let's go on to our work this weekend.
On Tuesday we'll be having a college planning workshop to go over some of the alphabet soup that is applying to college. We'll have about 20 minutes to work through Machiavelli's "The Morals of the Prince" - this is an excerpt of a longer work called The Prince. Machiavelli is a political theorist from the 1400's. You might find it helpful to consider who holds power in our novel and what that institution is doing to hold on to power. I think you may see some interesting parallels. Don't forget our conversation related to Marx today too.
We'll work through the next section of Grapes on Thursday. Be ready for that - it's time to get to California.

Today in class we had a productive day focused on some grammar skills - Where do we always put commas? - as well as time for reading and our projects on our novels. Remember that most of you will be on the college field trip on Tuesday - have fun and enjoy! - be sure that you have read this weekend to make up for the time in class that you'll miss.
Thursday will be our final day to work on our projects related to our books. Be sure that you're ready to present to your group about your topic.

Homework for Spring Break - A Day - 21 March 2019
We made it everyone! Break is upon us! Here are your reminders for what to accomplish over the break. Enjoy yourselves! Get a lot of rest and come back ready for the final push!
AP English III
Over the Spring Break we have reading and writing to accomplish. The reading is in The Grapes of Wrath and will take you through to the end of Chapter Sixteen. As you read you'll be going through the journey to California. Watch the characters. Use your motif charts. Those of you with chapter presentations in this section, be prepared for these - they'll fall on Wednesday after we return. As I said in class - there will be a quiz on this section of the reading. Don't be fooled.
On Monday when we return there will be papers due. Remember that your final draft should be that. You'll have one chance to resubmit it after it is scored. It should be printed, and submitted with a cover sheet and rubric. Submit your final draft with your process pieces - the rubrics - in your envelope on Monday.

Today in class we took our vocabulary quiz, had some time to do some poetry test corrections and then it was time to head to Room 401 to work on our applications with Mr. Clark. I know that some of us got a bit of bad news today, but remember that there are still a ton of options for you. Life is all about what you make it - so keep striving even if you can't get exactly what you want.
Over break I would suggest spending time relaxing and reading. Remember that when we return we have several weeks left before we begin to prepare for our exams! Be ready for a strong finish!

Homework for A-Day Students: 7 March 2019
AP English III
I certainly hope that you all enjoyed the beginning of The Grapes of Wrath today. I love this book and every time I read it I find a new way to appreciate and love it a bit more. You'll be meeting the Joads in the next few chapters. Be sure to create your front cover annotations and develop your back covers (motifs, topics, symbols, settings) as you read. The assignment is Chapters 2-4 this weekend.
You should also complete your research outline this weekend. Use the work in your synthesis packs to show me your argument on your topic (DADS), the main points that you will make (topics/reasons), and the way in which you will organize and use evidence. The better the outline, the better and easier the essay. If you need to find more sources - be sure to do so. All of your sources should be documented in the outline if they are used both with parenthetical and end-text citations.

Today was College Application Day. It was a wonderful day to get online, get our accounts, and get our applications started! We also had some time to work on some areas related to college applications such as resumes and personal statements. I hope that today felt like a good day and that you feel a bit more prepared for what's coming up next.
Next week we'll keep reading and working on our novels. Make sure that you're reading at home if you would like. They books just get better and better.

Homework for The End! - 22 May 2018
English IV
Today was Senior Day! Congratulations to our future graduates. I hope that you all enjoyed the day and the festivities that were planned for you. As a reminder - I will not be on campus Thursday, which is your actual last day of class. Many of you were not in class because of the Senior Day festivities. For this reason I will continue to accept any more novel projects - please be sure that it is turned in tomorrow at the latest.
Today was also a day to cash in rubles or Falcon Feathers for extra credit. Please see me tomorrow before or after-school to do this in order to improve your standing at the end of the year.
On Thursday you'll have a substitute teacher and a chance to earn more points on your Frankenstein essays. Attend class, enjoy Young Frankenstein and then write about it. Should be a great last day.
The B2 exam is scheduled for Tuesday the 29th in our classroom. We will begin after lunch. You will have A lunch.
AP English III
Today was a visit from Student Services to talk about planning for next year. Then we had a chance to also talk about what planning for next year is like. As you continue to make your decisions and start your planning, come and talk as you wish. We also cashed in rubles and Falcon Feathers - remember to see me tomorrow with any last cashing-in that you may need to do.
Tomorrow we have our AP Exam! Yay! It's time to cross this finish line! I'll be out there to see you all and give you some of my super early morning energy. Remember to get a good night's sleep and a solid breakfast in you to prepare. Look over your tasks, skills, strategies and notes. Chill out and be cool.
Thursday you'll have your short story exam. Be sure that you have clear understandings of all five of our short stories (Orwell is not on this exam). There will be multiple choice, matching, and a short answer question. In this test you will be challenged with some questions to find the BEST answer. After that we'll have course evaluation time.
Remember that exam exemptions will be finalized on Tuesday of next week after I grade your unit tests. Check in after your grades have been posted.

Homework for the Weekend - English Students - 17 November 2017

Today, we continued our reading of Twelfth Night after a good discussion about physical comedy. Make sure you are keeping in mind the various strategies Shakespeare is using to make us laugh throughout the play! At this point, just about everyone has made up the Canterbury Tales test. If you still haven't taken it, make sure you are prepared and have communicated with me or Mr. Miller about the best way to get it done; we need to have all of these tests complete and graded before Thanksgiving. Also, please consider finishing up the college applications many of you began in the media center this week. Have a great weekend, I'll see you on Tuesday!

Homework for B Day Students - 17 November 2017

Today, you all did a great job working through the first two scenes of Twelfth Night, even with the fire alarm interruption! After working through these and talking about jokes that can go too far, we spent the last part of class in the library working through college applications on CFNC. Tomorrow is the last day to apply to North Carolina colleges for free, so make sure you are thinking about getting applications submitted. Mr. Kelly in the library is a great resource for all of you, as are me and Mr. Miller for things like college essays. Remember, college can be an option for all of you, so make sure to do your due diligence to prepare. Have a great weekend, see you on Monday!

After that, we discussed Andrew Carnegie's "The Gospel of Wealth," connecting it to Gatsby and the American Dream. For next class, please read and annotate Chapter 4 of Gatsby, paying close attention to imagery and descriptions of color. Also prepare to submit a set of three vocabulary cards and get ready for an AP Timed Writing (rhetorical analysis prompt). Have a great weekend, see you on Monday!

Today, the class did an excellent job pushing through and understanding the first two scenes from Twelfth Night. I was very impressed with how you were all able to engage with Shakespeare's dirty humor. We also spent a good percentage of the class in the computer lab working on college applications through CFNC and the Common App. This is extremely important work, as it has the potential to change your life. I encourage you to keep thinking about applying for postsecondary education, even if it's for something as simple as an additional certification for your career.
