Homework for Thanksgiving Break - A Day

AP English III

Today we worked through the first section of James Baldwin's "Notes of a Native Son" so that we could understand one of Baldwin's arguments that racism and prejudice are an inherited disease that affects all types of Americans differently. We also began to see that there is a cure to this disease - through love and understanding.

After this, we set up our annotations for Beloved and began reading Chapter One. Over break, you should continue reading. Read to the end of Chapter Two. There are no chapter identifiers in the book, but you'll see where each chapter begins and ends because of the formatting. I've gone ahead and numbered all of these as chapters to make it easier on myself.

As you read, continue your annotations and continue to develop your back cover as Morrison shows you what this book is about. Build connections to the other authors and texts that we have seen so far, that will be helpful in understanding what is happening in Beloved. If you have time, continue reading through to the end of Chapter 5 - we'll be working through those later next week. I think that taking a look at Toni Morrison's Nobel Prize Speech can be helpful. Read through this with an eye toward her perspective/task as an author. You don't have to print it and annotate it; just make a few notes as you are reading.

Remember that you have vocabulary cards due for me on Friday when we return. There's also now a consistent threat of a reading quiz/check since we're working through a major text.

English IV

Over the Thanksgiving Break you should all be focused on your projects. Today you set your time and place for your adaptation of A Doll's House. Now it is time to select your three projects and to start working on those. Remember that when we come back from break you'll have time in class to work on this project and we'll spend some time in the computer lab to start putting this work together. Right now, be able to make your choices (actors, songs, etc) and be able to explain why you've made the choices that you've made.
