Homework for B-Day Students: 10/07/2013

Honors English II:

For homework tonight I want you to build from our lecture today on Hinduism and Hesse's biography.  We'll be continuing these notes on Wednesday as we start reading Siddhartha on that day too.  Tonight, I want you to find a news article related to one of the different topics we touched on during our lecture today.  Once you've found the article, you'll need to post a comment in which you do the following:

  1. Post the link for the article you've found.
  2. State the main idea/argument of the article as a complete sentence.
  3. Explain how the article connects to our lecture today.
  4. State three facts you learned from reading the article.
If you don't do this on the class website then you will need to bring a printout of your article as well as the answers to the three tasks.  There can be no repeat of an article, so make sure that you look at what others have posted before you submit yours.  Let me know if you have any questions about this.

ESL English III

Today we finished reading our first major text of the year "A Taste of Home."  On Friday you will have a quiz on this text.  For tonight, it would be in your best interest to begin studying and reviewing this story.  We will do a bit of a guided review on Wednesday after our time in the computer lab.  Come with questions to class on Wednesday so that you're prepared for Friday!

My article was
http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2010-11-08/edit-page/28238436_1_science-and-religion-hinduism-christianity

1)The main argument of this article is that just because Christianity is more scientifically proven that Hinduism does not mean it is more true. The article is also saying that Christianity has had to change some of its sayings because it could not ignore science like Hinduism could.

2)This article has to do with the article because in Siddhartha the religion is Hinduism and the main religion in India is Hinduism.

3)-I learned that in Hinduism its core principles are of no consequence to science. (Took nothing from science into effect)
- I learned that the Reformation in the 16th century made Christianity accommodate reason in order to survive.
-I learned that Hinduism worships divine heroes.

http://world.time.com/2013/08/27/what-dna-testing-reveals-about-indias-caste-system/

1. The main idea of this article is that genetic mixing ended in India around the same time that the caste system was introduced.

2. This relates to today's lecture in that it shows the separation between groups caused by the caste system. This is explains how serious the caste system is to Hinduism. Hindus completely stopped having children with people outside of their castes.

3. Three facts:
- Before the caste system, ancestry in India could be traced back to two groups: one from Africa and one from Eurasia.
- Around the time that the caste system was being written into religious texts, India's population split into 4,635 distinct genetic groups.
- Genetic mixing in India ended around 1,900 years ago.

1.The main idea of the article is to show that discrimination in India's caste system is as bad as ever. Here a girl was almost killed.

2. This has to do with the lecture from today because we talked about how the caste system was still present today. The article told how it is being practiced today.

3.Three facts:

- Other castes act harshly to the Dalit caste.

- The castes are compared to body parts.

- Punishment can be extreme in the caste system.

1. The main argument of this article is that karma is not simply cause and effect as William Roache rudely made it out to be.

2. This relates to Hinduism and karma, which we discussed in the lecture on Monday. It talks about the misconceptions people have about Hinduism.

3. I learned...
- Karma is more complex than what people not familiar with Hinduism think.
- Buddhists and Hindus have a lot in common when it comes to their views on karma.
- Buddhists believe that karma cannot be truly studied or understood by anyone but Buddha himself.

1. My article can be found at http://www.mywesttexas.com/life/article_f47d4ec6-1fc4-11e3-9d56-0019bb2963f4.html

2. The main idea of this article is that Hinduism is not just a religion, it is a way of life. In the article Hinduism is referred to as a guideline to everyday living in which selflessness servitude is looked down upon with great honor and fondness. Another side argument of the article is that Hinduism is not the same as many other religions. In other religions, a single scripture or founder is present. While in Hinduism there may be no true scripture the values of the religion are still known to the members.

3. This article relates directly to our discussion because it shows Hinduism as a way of life just like we talked about in our discussion yesterday. It also relates to some of the specific details of Hinduism we talked about such as the importance of serving others.

4. 3 things i learned from the article.
~The Hindu temple ritual know as a "puja"
~The Hindu belief that God is everything and everything is God.
~That there is no true scripture or founder of Hinduism such as the Bible and Jesus of Christianity.

1)The Main idea of the article is that there is still mistreatment of people regognized as a part of the lowest caste, referred to as the "Dalits".

2) The article reflects to our leture because we talked about the established Caste system. Even though we learned that it was established a long while ago, it is shown in the article that it is still present in many aspects of common life.

3) -Delhi is the capital of India

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2006/dec/08/comment.india

1. This article argues that the negative effects of the caste system did not originate from the Hindu scriptures, and that, while the caste system has been abused, it is not because the majority of the Hindu population intended it to be.

2. This relates to the lecture by discussing misinterpretations of the Hindu caste system. and culture.

3. Three facts
a)India's constitution guarantees religious freedom.

But keeping it “just didn’t feel right.” Instead of keeping it, he found the person who had left the bag and returned it.

http://www.hinducurrents.com/articles/share/138230/

This article is a report of the Indian government interfering with the caste system, by appointing widows to positions in government temples.

This has to do with the gradual erosion of the caste system, which is a large component of the Hindu system of reincarnation.

Facts? You got 'em.
-Widows tend to be shunned in Hindu society.
-The appointment was chosen due to the social viewpoints of the province, as to encourage reconsideration of their ways.
-The temple was founded by a Hindu seer, Narayan Guru.

1) The main idea of the article was that in July of 2013, the holiest Buddhist temple in India, Bodh Gaya, was bombed.
2)This article is relevant to the lecture because Buddhism is the religion/lifestyle that Siddhartha introduced. The article also talked some about how the Indian currency is quickly losing value, and how prices are going up. This is relevant to the lecture because Herman Hesse's trip to India, when he found out how much poverty there is in India. Now there will probably end up being even more poverty, because suddenly the value of everyone's money went down.
3) 3 facts:
1- Bodh Gaya is the holiest buddhist temple in all of India.
2-Indian people are in the top five for foreign people who buy homes in the United States.
3-Indian officials still do not know who is responsible for the attack on Bodh Gaya.

1. The main idea of this article was that the caste system is slowly becoming not as important as it used to be and now people who come from lower classes have hope of getting a job that isn't menial.

2. This article relates to what we talked about in class because we talked about how the untouchables couldn't hold jobs but this shows that that idea is slowly dying out. We also talked about what the untouchables were.

3. Three facts:
-the country's V.P., K. R. Narayanan came from an untouchable class
