10 and 11 March

AP Language

Today was our last working day for Unit 4 - Research and Synthesis writing. Your papers are due as are your vocabulary cards and other finishing up elements of the unit. I'm really happy to see so much growth in your writing and your approach to the task over the last few weeks. This unit is where we're coming closest to college level work, so your gains have been meaningful.

Papers will be marked late if they are missing on Monday morning. AP Classroom progress checks for the end of the unit will close on Tuesday night. Don't wait until 11:30 PM on Tuesday night to complete this. It won't end well for you.

We'll be starting Unit 5 on Monday/Tuesday. It's a lot of choice in the next unit, and it's our last unit, so I'll be interested to see the directions that you take yourself.

English 10

Today was the end of Unit 4 and the end of our study of Russia and Eastern European literature. We took our time in class today to complete our SOL Essay 2 and then use remaining time for any final unit tasks. I'm looking forward to reading these essays and seeing the way in which you've grown as writers so far this year. I should have these scored for you by the end of the weekend.

On Monday/Tuesday you will need to turn in your project to avoid the late penalty. We'll be moving to our next unit as well on Monday, so after we finish the unit introduction you'll have time to finish and submit projects. Our next unit is focused on Latin American literature and thought - there are plenty of great authors for us to meet!

AP Language

Today was another day on our Groundhog Day rotation - another writing and conferencing day. We're rounding out the unit right now, so I want to outline your requirements to close the unit out.

1. This week your paper and vocabulary cards are due. Turn in your paper as a PDF. Don't forget your MLA formatting for the document and the works cited page. Vocabulary cards are also due. Give me the paper copy of your rubric when you turn in your paper. 

2. The MCQ and FRQ for the unit is due next week. It's opne for you to complete at your time and leisure. This will be scored on the more stringent scale - it's a full essay. Follow the instructions.

3. Checklists for participation can be turned in when they are full. If you need to meet for a conference, be sure to see me for that ASAP!

I think that's all. I'm after school on Wednesday and Thursday if you need me!

English 10

Today was a day where we worked on a few elements of our ending of the unit. We reviewed the final project requirements and took forty minutes to start our work on those projects. Keep in mind that this project is due on Monday. We'll do presentations of our projects later next week. We're also moving into our next unit soon - so be ready for Latin America and the literature from there. It's a great part of the world.

The second major thing we worked on is our SOL Essay preparation. We'll be writing next class. Use the packet that we worked on today to gather your ideas and thoughts together. I'm hoping that I'll see a lot of growth on these essays from our first one in Quarter 1. 

Please turn in your vocabulary, test corrections, and other work to finish the unit ASAP. Next class we'll talk about how to set up our final projects.

Ending the Week - Thursday the 18th of March

AP Language

Today in class we had an assessment and working day. The main goal was to complete our assessment on the Prologue to Chapter Seven in Invisible Man. I look forward to reading your responses and interpretations of elements of the novel so far. Expect the scores to be entered on Monday.

Beyond that, there was time for a poetry exploration and discussion as well as time for conferencing, reading, or vocabulary. Remember that next week your vocabulary cards will be collected and that you will meet the end of the grading period. Any papers to be reviewed need to be resubmitted by the end of the day on the 26th.

English 10

Today's class was a bit of everything. We engaged with each other in a discussion board on unwritten rules before taking time to read through a bit more of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. We looked at characters, especially the differences between two guards, and thought up some great topics and symbols before some discussions on the book. 

Next week we'll take a break from Solzhenitsyn to write our third SOL essay of the year. The prompt and planner is posted for you to use as you'd like. We'll write the essay in class on Tuesday/Wednesday. The essay will be the last big points of the quarter. Remember that if you're missing something from earlier this quarter, now is the time to turn it in. 

Enjoy the weekend and the beginning of spring. You may want to start reading a bit on your own to keep moving through the novel. Next week I'll start assigning reading on your own.

Finishing Up Week 18

English 10

Today was our day to finish the quarter with our second SOL essay. Remember that we'll continue to practice and write these types of essays as we keep going through the year. You won't actually take this exam until next year at the end of English 11. I'll be scoring your essays on Monday and uploading your final grades for the quarter. Be sure that any missing assignments are turned in by then as well. 

Next week we'll be starting a new unit to develop our researching and presenting skills. It'll also involve a bit of a virtual field trip, so stay tuned for that. As always, let me know what I can do to be of assistance!

AP Language

Today's class was a bit of a mixed bag: we reviewed options for class registration which will occur on Tuesday for you all, we took some independent time to work with sources and research, and then finished with a small group activity to get feedback on our questions and positions as they stand.

Remember that today is the final class of the grading period and that all of your grades are posted. Any final changes or updates will be posted before the end of tomorrow. If you think that I've missed something, please reach out and let me know ASAP so that I can check and correct as needed.

I've posted our course registration review in preparation for Tuesday's meeting with counselors. Remember that your outline will soon be due as well as your synthesis pack, more on this next week.

Thursday - January 14

English 10

Today was our working day to finish with the film version of Persepolis as well as our planning for the media review. The due date on the media review has been extended to Monday. Remember that the viewing guide will help you with your evidence if you decide to write your media review on the movie instead of the book, but you can write on either one.

I posted an assignment called Essay 2 Preparation. Our final grade of the quarter and semester will be our Quarter 2 SOL Essay. We'll write that in-class at the end of next week. This planner pack has your prompt, graphic organizers, and review on constructing your essay. This assignment isn't for a grade, but doing it will certainly help your final essay grade.

Be sure to check and make sure that any and all assignments are submitted before the end of the quarter on Friday the 22nd. Use the recording the review the assignments posted.

AP English Language

Today's class was a chance for us to finish our revisions and finalizations of our research question while also moving forward into the outlining of our argument and response. Remember that these databases you have access to are goldmines - they do the citations, provide both primary and non-print sources, and you can save directly to your Google Drive. As you continue to work this weekend and through next week, focus on collecting sources and organizing your ideas to clarify your argument.

Submit your finalized research question and argument by the end of the weekend for my review and scoring. Also, don't forget about the practice on AP Classroom. Next week we'll be highly focused on the development of the outline to move forward into drafting and conferencing.
