23 May - Friday Feels

English 11

Today was a great day because some of you finished up your grades for English 11. The only thing that we have left to do is our Final Exam which is going to fall on two days - Wednesday the 28th and then June. On Wednesday we'll do our essay. You'll have the whole class period to write. I've already given you the prompts, and I've chosen one. Remember to review your tools for success with writing. You'll be typing your essays to help with scoring.

Outside of that, focus on your design challenge and your final tasks. I'm here to help, but we are running out of time. There are only three class meetings left. If you have items to turn in, get them to me as soon as possible. You have Lion Time on Wednesday and Friday next week. Remember if you're coming in for the early final exam, you'll need to make a pass for Lion Time on Wednesday.

21 May - Wacky Wednesday

English 11

Great days at the end of the year in English 11. Today was a day for us to focus on creating and finalizing some of the evidence we'll need for our design challenge. I am excited to see what you all are creating as you explore a problem and potential solution. As we are closing out the year, be in touch about your grades or any questions. I appreciate that so many of you are using Lion Time now to get extra help that you need.

Next class, Friday, some of you will be presenting your work to me. Others of you will present the week after, the final day to turn in items related to the Design Challenge is the last day of class. Be sure to study for your final vocabulary quiz. We'll vhae it on Friday. It covers list eight. The link to the study materials has been posted. Let's finish strong! We're nearly there!

19 May - Kicking Off the Week

English 11

Whoo! What a day! I love when we have days like today when it feels like everyone is making some forward momentum and progress. We're all in some different places, but that's called life, what matters is that we're all pushing forward in the way that we need to. Our main focus for today's class was focused on our final writing assignment - The Design Challenge - and understanding the requirements for our final exam.

Your Design Challenge could be finished this week. Next class will be a class focused on creating. I'm hoping that we'll be in workshop mode as we make and produce and revise with feedback. The goal is that you can submit your "text" by Friday for us to review together. If you can't make Friday, then you have several other deadlines. The final deadline is June 3. The last day of class.

We also discussed the final examination today. Your essay will fall on May 28. You'll have the whole class to write. If you are planning to take the exam early, you'll need to make a plan for Lion Time to complete the reading portion. I've given and posted the review materials, so prepare as you need to!

15 May - End of the Week

English 11

Really good end to the week in English 11 today. I'm really happy with the way that so many of you lauched right into our final assignment. I love the enthusiasm. Be sure that if you didn't complete your Brainstorming today, to do so by the end of the weekend. I'd like to have feedback for you by the next time I see you. That will set you up well for Part 2 - Finding Evidence and Planning Your Text.

After lunch we moved into our choice independent working time. As I explained, some of you need to finish the Drama Project. You can use your choice play or A Raisin in the Sun for this. Prioritize the writing about the speech - this is two major grades. Use SIS and your progress report to help you figure out what to complete. Most of the work is located in Previous Lessons, Unit 4. 

I'm available next week during Lion Time for extra help. We'll also get our final exam materials next week. Be ready for the end! It's coming on apace!

13 May - Rain, Raisin, and Tuesdays

English 11

No recording for today because most of today was spent enjoying A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. We watched the rest of Act 1, Scene 1 as a class in order to understand the motivations for each of the main characters, the foiling of Walter and Benethea, and the message around the American Dream that is being created by Hansberry in her text. I liked the fact that so many of you were engaged by hearing Hansberry talk about her own work. Please continue to visit that podcast if you'd like to keep listening.

During our independent time, there were several choices. It is important that any missing assignments are submitted as soon as possible. These are final demonstrations of skill. We have one task left which is our final writing task, and we'll start working on that during Thursday's class. If you have any questions or concerns about anything related to your grade or assignments, reach out immediately.

5 May - Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

English 11

A good start to the week for us today as we worked through WEB DuBois and the end of our preparation for the Reading SOL on Thursday morning. Remember that on the SOL you'll have a lot of passages to read and then to answer questions about. The questions will range in type from vocabulary to literary devices to theme and topic type questions. Over the last few lessons, I've been trying to show you different types of texts and ask you the sorts of questions that you'll see on Thursday. Hopefully, you're well prepared.

On Wednesday, you'll finish your review and submit your two review assignments - The Game Plan and the Review Bank. I've gotten a great guest teacher who will go over strategies and sample items to help prepare you. On Friday, we'll take some time to reflect and review before finishing up our Drama Project work. 

As always, reach out with any questions or concerns. Remember that at the end of the year it is important to not miss any assignments. Make them up as soon as you can! Also, continue to revise assignments as you want to so that you get to the achievement level that you want in this class. See you soon!

1 May - May Already?!

English 11

Great times today in English 11, everyone. I'm glad that some of you were able to complete part of your Drama Project during our working time. Remember that the goal is to have all parts of the project completed by the 12th of May as we start to wrap up this unit. This project will allow you to demonstrate your writing, reading, and your oral communication skills. I've posted the Writing Workshop template and recording for those of you who need it to do your written work about your speech.

Over the weekend, make your priority this work. Try to complete the writing of your speech and the preparation. Remember that you can do a recording of your voice to complete the speech requirement. As you're doing this, process using your SOL Reading bank. You should be nearly done with this assignment.

We ended our day with a vocabulary quiz. If you weren't here to take it, please make an appointment for Monday Lion Time. In the fourth quarter it's important that we finish all assignments as quickly as we can! Next week we'll finish our preparation for the SOL. We've got a last article to read as a class, final work on the SOL Bank, and some sample test items we'll review. I'll be sad to be away on Wednesday for the class before the test, but I've got a good substitute teacher for you. Have a great weekend!

25 April - Friday Fun!

English 11

Good end to the week today in English 11. I was so happy that so many of you got so much done today. Over the weekend, be sure to submit any missing vocabulary work so that you can drop your zero. Remember that if you're doing the test, it has multiple sections and you need to do all of them! I'll update the gradebook again next week, so make any submissions over the weekend.

We also took a lot of time to work on our Drama Projects. These projects are reading projects and writing if you're in the Honors extension group. Remember that for this you need to find a key speech and complete your analysis of the speech. The key questions to discuss are context and importance. If you're in Honors extension, be sure to complete your analysis too. Have drafts for Thursday. We'll have writing workshop that day.

We also finished up List Seven today. Your quiz will fall on Thursday! Be ready! I'm excited to read with you next week as we look at Tomas Rivera. Be sure that you're checking in with your SOL Reading Bank, you should almost be done with the bank!

10 April - Off to Spring Break!

English 11

Simple day today in English 11 as we did some business for FCPS and a bit of preparation for our Reading SOL. Today we took the final round of our MAP Literacy Test. This is mostly a reading comprehension and vocabulary assessment. The information from this test helps me to prepare you for the upcoming Reading SOL by letting me know what I need to teach and review in these final classes. If you didn't finish the test today, or if you were absent, please plan to come to Lion Time on April 21. This is a very important test to finish!

After finishing the test there were chances to complete vocabulary work, enjoy your plays, or work on your SOL Reading Bank. I tried to have a quick check in with each of you as you finished your test today as well. If we didn't get a chance to meet and talk, we'll do that after break. You can always come to Lion Time for a conference too!

I hope that you all have a great break! I'm going to be in North Carolina for Passover with my family on Saturday and then we go to Florida on Monday for a few days. I'm excited to be at the beach with a book - that's for sure! I can't wait to see you when we get back for the final push to summer!

4 April - End of the Week

English 11

Great end to the week today in English 11 - the only bad thing was that we were missing so many of you! If you're away, I hope that today's post, the recording, and the resources posted help keep you caught up. We started the day by working through our SOL Reading Review Bank. I went through Joy Harjo's poem "Anchorage" and was able to find several devices. You can feel free to use what I did. Remember that as you're reading and studying throughout the rest of this unit, the goal is to collect your devices. This is how you study for our SOL since most of the questions will focus on devices, topics, and themes.

After that, we got into our choice plays. It is my hope that you finish your play by the time we go out on Spring Break. We did a creative activity for a grade where we created the cover of the Playbill for this play. I was happy to see your Reading Interpretation skills take a new form. From there, we went into a rich conversation about our various plays. It was great hearing the connections that you were building about struggle, overcoming adversity, and the American Dream. We'll continue these conversations as we keep reading.

For the weekend, focus on reading your plays! Keep processing them using your SOL Reading Review Bank. Don't forget that we'll have a vocabulary assessment on Tuesday - so study up! Next week is the last week before Spring Break!

2 April - Kicking Off A New Unit

English 11

Today was all about new beginnings as we kicked off both Quarter 4 and Unit 4 - Drama and Character. In this next unit we'll be studying dramas and a few short stories in order to investigate the ways in which authors create meaning through characters. We're going to see how characters are representative of ideas, so when characters are having discussion and conflict, it's more ideas that are having discussion and conflict. All of this will help us to further understand themes and messages and the ways in which they're created.

If you have any work to complete for Quarter 3, now is the time. Please see me by Friday Lion Time to avoid any last zeroes. Remember that in Quarter 4, your grade is the grade that's reported! Let's play hard here at the end to ensure we finish the year strongly. 

We've got two major assignments that we'll be working on throughout the month of April. Our Drama Project and our SOL Reading Review Bank. I think that the Reading Review Bank is one of the most important assignments you'll complete all year. As we read we'll be scrubbing to review literary devices because that's the bulk of your SOL Exam. Once this is complete, turn it in! Use it to prepare and study actively for our exam.

Outside of that, be reading your new plays! Study for your upcoming Vocabulary Examination. I'm excited for class on Friday! We'll be reading and getting into our characters in our dramas. I'm excited to see what we come up with!

25 March - End of the Quarter

English 11

An easy day to end the quarter today, everyone! I hope that you had a great day getting the time that you needed to finish up major assignments, presentations, and extend your knowledge and skills around poetry. If you were absent, we do have next week to finish up this quarter. I'm available on Wednesday, April 2, to complete any last assignments for Quarter Three. Please be in touch and make an appointment if needed. I'll continue to accept work submitted online.

Next class we'll be starting our work on Drama and Character - Unit 4. I've got some videos for you to explore, author research, and some discussion boards. I won't be with you, so you'll need to complete all of your tasks online. I posted your video to go over your tasks for Thursday's class on Schoology. 21 March - End of the Week/Quarter

English 11

A simple day in English 11 as we took our Poetry Unit Exam today. In the examination I gave you a poem and asked several questions about literary devices to include the themes of the poem. I'll be returning your work to you soon. This weekend is a great weekend to submit your major assignments. Tuesday is the last day for us to do this work. Many of you were absent today, so I would recommend coming to Lion Time on Tuesday to make up the work you need to do. 

I'll have progress reports ready for you on Tuesday. This will give you the chance to take care of any missing assignments or retakes on Tuesday. Reach out with any questions. I'll be working this weekend, so I'll respond fast. Have a great weekend, and, as always, Go Tarheels!

19 March - Another Wacky Wednesday

English 11

A great day in English 11 as we started our conclusion with poetry and with our third quarter tasks. We did a quick grammar review at the beginning of class - mostly focused on commas and sentence structure - before going into our review for our poetry exam on Friday. 

The most important thing to focus on learning before Friday are the literary devices. Reviewing our slides and our recordings will help with this. I would also recommend reviewing your theme checklist. Remember that theme is the message or whole statement about the topic. What does the author want the audience to know about the topic? What is the author's opinion on the topic? My best advice to prepare is to review your devices from our unit, read more poetry, and consider the topics and messages. 

The end of class was all about our final tasks - presentations and book projects. I'm glad that each day more and more final tasks are submitted for me to review. Remember that the final day for presentations is next week on Tuesday. We'll be transitioning to our new unit on Thursday. I'll have all grades updated next week for you. As always, reach out with any questions or concerns. I'll be available Thursday (March 20) after school if you need that.

13 March - End of the Week

English 11

Solid end of the week today in English 11. We are focused right now on finishing up our independent novel work with our research based presentations and our creative book projects. Today was a day for us to start (and in some cases finish) our reading projects. Remember that the goal of the project is to demonstrate your ability to read and comprehend a text. No matter the choice of project you're focused on demonstrating those key skills. Think about the evidence that you'll use from the book and what you'll say about that evidence. Feel free to use your previous resources and work that you've done to support you with this. Note that projects are due by March 25.

After that we did a review on our most recent poetry quizzes. Next week we'll have more feedback in the form of a lesson and activity. For now, we looked at the idea of the right answer versus the best answer and how to tell the difference. Don't get tricked! After lunch we did some vocabulary and then ended class as we needed with choice working time.

Over the weekend, focus on your book tasks. This is a great time for your projects and presentations. Go ahead and make your appointment pass for your presentation slot (if necessary). I'm so excited to see the outcomes from your learning! Have a great weekend!

7 March - End of the Week with Emily Dickinson

English 11

And with that, the week is complete. Great work this week, y'all. I'm really excited to see these presentations that you all are putting together based on your books. I appreciate the way that you're focused on presenting your own argument, digging into source material and information, and putting various viewpoints together to support your overall idea. Each team/person is in a slightly different place, and that's totally okay. Next week we'll focus on taking some time to finish our planning and put the final product together. We'll start presenting week after next - remember that you can sign up for any date you'd like - but all presentations must be completed by March 25th.

After our start with our presentations, we moved into reading and studying poetry. We looked at a famous American poet - Emily Dickinson - and we discussed diction, imagery, and figurative language. These poems stretch our brains a bit because they read like riddles, but using the clues the author provides, we were able to figure it out.

We ended the day with vocabulary and began our study of List Six. If you missed the vocabulary quiz, please make an appointment to get that settled. At the end of the quarter, it's important that we settle missing work as soon as possible. 

I look forward to seeing you next week. We'll be finishing our book study next week, so if you have a missing quiz or need to finish reading, make that the priority for the weekend! You may also want to begin to pull together any materials that you'll need for your project.

5 March - Happy Spring!

English 11

Happy Wednesday Everyone! It was great to be back with you all today. Today was a bit of an everything class, but we were focused on assessment of learning and improving our skills for the future. We started things off by completing our vocabulary review and studying before our quiz. I've updated the grades in the gradebook based on your most recent demonstration of your skill. Remember, if you didn't complete the review activity then the quiz will count for both. If you missed today's quiz or you'd like a retake, just make an appointment for Friday, and we'll settle it up.

After the quiz we rolled into some feedback and review on our upcoming presentations. We did a great lesson on the different types of argument because I see a lot of you needing to extend your skill to meet a new need. Think about the flavor of argument that you're presenting and be sure to include key language related to that. We also focused on the idea of defining key words and phrases with specificity and the important distinction between EFFECT and AFFECT. 

At the end of class, we took time as we needed for questions and concerns and to develop the ideas of our project. I'll begin presentations starting March 17. You can come during lunch, Lion Time, or we can do it during class. When you're ready, we'll complete the task. Remember you're getting writing grades and oral communication. Next week we'll be focused on our creative book projects - this is your reading score. If you're missing your quiz, please get that turned in by Friday to avoid a zero. The last major grade we have for this quarter is our Poetry Test. This will happen in the last weeks of the quarter. We'll do a bit more study and review before.

Tuesday the 25th - See Ya Next Week

English 11

Today was a busy day in English 11. We were starting a few tasks which we'll continue to work on and finish over the next few days. Remember that I'll be out for the next two classes, so today you started some of the tasks that you'll be finishing up. Let's review what we did and talk about what we have coming up.

We started the day by doing some vocabulary review. Your quiz will be next week on Wednesday. Your review assignment is due on the day of the quiz. It's a formative grade, the quiz will be a summative one. After our vocabulary time, we worked on analyzing non-print texts. I really liked the outcomes that you all were getting to related to the images, the way to draw details from them, and the connections that can be built. After that, we went to the work on our presentations.

The presentation work will be the main work for you on Thursday and into next week. It's time for you to find sources, finalize your research question, and consider your argument. If you're working in a group, each person needs to have ownership of a part. On Thursday and Monday you'll continue to find and process sources to contribute to your final presentation. You'll also be focused on reading so that you can get finished with your books. 

I'll keep up with you the best I can while I'm away. Be respectful stewards of our space and welcoming to our guest. I look forward to seeing where your presentations are going and to wrapping up our unit in the coming weeks.

21 February - Happy Friday!

English 11

A good day to end the week today in English 11. I'm really excited to see what you all did today for your reading quizzes, and I was so happy to see the great thinking related to Gloria Steinem's article. Here's our review of class.

We started the day by reflecting on our central question for the year - What are some American problems? Why are they important? Whom do they effect? We had some very vibrant conversation and drew a lot of connections between problems, their impacts, and the various texts we've read this year. From there, we looked at "Women Are Never Frontrunners" by Gloria Steinem. In the article she discusses sexism, misogyny, and the impact that this has on women no matter who they are in America. Steinem takes a political approach, but we can see the reality of her words in every day life. 

To end class, we completed our quiz on our books. If you didn't have time to finish, please be sure that it is turned in by Monday morning so that I can score it. In the quiz, we focused on a key passage and demonstrated our ability to understand and interpret the passage. The quiz was open book. If you were not in class, you can feel free to complete the quiz on your own, or we can meet at Lion Time.

Be in touch with any questions or concerns that you may have. We're going to be pivoting to focus on our projects here at the end of the unit, so be ready for that! Keep reading and making progress through your books. That's the best way to prepare for what we have ahead.

14 February - Happy Valentine's Day!

English 11

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! It was a space full of love today as we did so much fantastic work. We had a bit of a split class with half focused on writing and half focused on reading. Here's our overview.

We started, as we often do, with some grammar. The grammar corrections were based off of some of the errors that I saw in your last letter practice. The major things are comma usage, capitalization, and run-on or fragment sentences. I hope that the feedback and practice was helpful for you. From there, we moved into developing our Game Plan for WorkKeys on Wednesday. Turn in your plan. Take a picture and upload that or show it to me when we're in class on Wednesday. I want you to each have a plan for the night before, your packing list, and what you'll do with your time when you write.

After our writing preparation, we moved into reading. We looked at two texts today - "New York Day Women" by Edwidge Danticat and "Anchorage" by Joy Harjo. I loved sharing a piece about my hometown in Alaska. The readings are posted as are the read-alouds. We didn't have as much time as I would have liked with the texts, but we did come to some good understandings.

If you were absent, be sure to review the post and the recording. I do want your Game Plan for Wednesday, even if you were absent today. Over the weekend, focus on preparing for your writing test. If you need more help, I'm here during Lion Time on Wednesday for it. Enjoy the long weekend!
