AP Research
Today in class we had a great time getting started on our QUESTS and delving into the first major assignment of the course which is our SOURCE LIST. The slides in Google Classroom outline the requirements for the Source List assignment. Hopefully these classes have been helpful for you in setting your pathway forward.
Remember that the assignment is due by the 20th of September. Your sources should be categorized and in APA format. All that I need is a list of your categorized sources for this assignment. Remember to continue working on Reading and Task logs as you need to.
Russian I
This week we will have our first quiz and it's on the alphabet. Today in class we practiced by writing and speaking a bit - this is a great way to prepare for what we have ahead. The quiz will cover just the letters, sounds, and some basic vocabulary.
I am also collecting handwriting packets through the week. They will be late if turned in after Friday.
For tonight, be sure that you have completed your handwriting, and that you are studying your cognate words [words that are the same in English and Russian]. Next class we'll start getting into some culture!
Advanced Russian
Today in class we reviewed how to form all three tenses in Russian - past, present, and future. And that's the main goal in tonight's homework. You should write a super short story -- three sentences, each sentence using a different tense. If you're in Russian III or IV then you should have at least six sentences. Additionally, you will need to complete your verb cards.
Wednesday's class is focused on review before the quiz on Friday. Be sure that it's productive by being prepared.

Homework for Wednesday - 4 September - A Day
AP Research
It's time to start the QUEST. Navigate to your PREP folders and begin working on your "Planning Log" and your "Reading Log". Document all steps that you take as you begin. Begin to consider your problem statement, gap, and question as it stands and as it develops. Try to be working with 2-4 sources per evening as we work.
Russian I
We're almost done with the alphabet! Tonight we have some more letters to practice with and sounds to learn. Be sure to review your notes daily and keep practicing with your sentences and vocabulary. We will have our first quiz on Monday and it will cover the sounds and shapes of the Russian alphabet! Your handwriting packets are also due on this day.

We now know more about the One Stem Verb System than we did before and that is incredible! Keep working and practicing with it to develop even more! You should be making your verb cards at this time (use our work in class as an example). Also, engage with the language! Take a look at Bunin's "Three Rubles" and try to find the verbs (Russian IV - Try to also find the participles! They come from verbs, so that counts!)

We will have our first Unit Examination on Monday. Remember that this will cover Freakonomics through fifty multiple choice questions and the EOC Task A. You'll have all 90 minutes to complete the assessment. Remember that you will be timed.

You all also have an assessment on Monday - it will cover the One Stem Verb System in Russian for some of the most productive stems. I've uploaded the review sheet into your classroom on Google Classroom. You should be prepared to:
Russian I
We will take our first quiz on the alphabet on Wednesday. I would like to spend more time on Monday with another activity as well as with some cultural work which will help you to finish learning your sounds and shapes. Over the weekend, take time to finish your handwriting packets. This is the most important task. The handwriting packet is worth 100 points - so it is a large amount of work to complete. Be sure that you have finished learning your sounds and shapes - like I said in class, there are tons of online resources to help you with this.
Lastly, if you see anything missing in your gradebook - be sure to have it ready for me by the end of next week. Some of you need to turn in a paragraph on the film we watched. Take care of that this weekend, and then turn it in to me

- show a knowledge of how stems indicate important information about verbs
- show how to read a conjugated verb in order to determine its stem
- apply knowledge of stems to give a most likely conjugation of new verbs
- show an understanding of Structural Transcription as it applies to stems
I would highly recommend working through the rest of your verb cards if you already have not, and you should complete Exercise 8Г on your own or with a colleague in order to review all of these skills together.

If you felt unprepared, study and review so that when you are reassessed on this content in your later examination, you will be more ready. Then we moved on to understanding how to RAVEN something and why this is a helpful tool.
You should accomplish the following tasks before next class. First, go back to your work with sources and online resources that we did on Monday. Look at one of your sources through RAVEN. What does the RAVEN model help you to understand. You may find it helpful to go to Google Classroom and use the blank sheet. Second, read the article called "Is Google Making Us Stupid" and annotate it. Consider the ideas around perspectives, questions, and thinking as you read this.

- Work through your verb cards and the sheet with your exemplar verb for each stem. Have a good understanding of how to work through conjugation in past/non-past and the idiosyncrasies of each stem.
- Review Exercise 8Г on page 170. Can you do this work? Can you develop those forms from the given information?
- Review the verbs in Chapters One through Four. Know their meaning, the stem, and the conjugations.
Russian I
We know all of the alphabet except for a few letters, so hopefully you'll be able to complete all of the handwriting packet with a few small exceptions. I gave each of you a list of cognate words today in class as we were leaving. Be sure that you spend time this weekend practicing with your reading, spelling, and writing. Hopefully you will all see that you can already read words in Russian.
We will have an alphabet quiz very soon! Be sure that you are prepared for this assessment. Don't forget to use YouTube and DuoLingo as you are studying and reviewing!

Homework for B-Day - 4 September 2018
Remember, the next time that I see you I'll be a bit smarter since I'll be a bit older! Make sure that you're ready for our next class by preparing the proper tribute aka gifts aka homework assignments.
Russian I
We're almost halfway through the Russian alphabet! Hooray! As we keep working, remember that you should be working through your handwriting packet on a daily basis. Be sure that you remember to review and study every day so that you are able to memorize these shapes and sounds. Looking at the letters we have done so far, you should be able to complete the following exercises:
1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 13
Feel free to do more if you would like, but those would be the minimum requirement. See you all next class!

Today we spent a lot of time drawing and writing outside before getting back to our work on verbs. Tonight, you have two assignments to work on - one you'll complete and one you'll just begin.
Start by completing Exercise 8B - complete what we started in class by finishing the even questions. Remember to follow the chart format where you address the process of joining, the stem, and show how the process works. Then, move on to your verb cards.
For the verb cards you'll be assigning one verb to each card. For tonight, I want you to try to show the verb in its Standard Transcription for the infinitive and past tense endings. Show the stem + the ending, and how they combine.
Next class we'll start looking at present tense (aka non-past) to understand more about what stems are telling us.

For our next AP Seminar class we'll be focusing in on the idea of perspective and approach to questions and inquiry. We started to discuss some of these ideas today at the conclusion of class. For this, you'll be taking a look at the film Blackfish and considering the perspective on the issue that the film explores.
Take a look at our previous post so that you remind yourself of what to follow as you watch the film. Take notes as you watch related to those ideas, and don't forget to read over SeaWorld's official response to the documentary. We'll have some interesting ideas to bandy about on Thursday.

30 August - Homework for the Weekend - B Day
AP Seminar
This weekend you have two tasks to accomplish. Now, you really don't have to do the second one until next week, but I would recommend getting it done now while you have the three-day weekend.
For Tuesday I want you to have read and annotated the article called "Put Your Husband in the Kitchen" - remember to keep your notes and have them to show if asked. You may print and annotate the article or just take notes as you read. We'll also be finishing our QUEST posters on Tuesday. For Thursday I want you to have viewed and considered the film Blackfish. There's also this response to the film by SeaWorld which you should also read. As you are viewing these documents, consider the following tasks:

- Identify EVERY invested party brought up in the documentary
- Identify parties that were NOT brought up.
- Make a list of lenses that the film focuses on and the lenses that are neglected.
- Lastly, write a strong paragraph that analyses the approach that the documenary creators use in specific regards to lens and how it relates to their purpose/objective.
I will collect the paragraphs for a grade. You may not be able to complete the whole assignment for Thursday until class on Tuesday due to what we'll be covering related to lenses and approaches.
Advanced Russian
For homework over the weekend I want you all to practice working with verbs in transcription and going through the process of joining verbs and stems together. Take a look at Exercise 8B on pages 168-169. Organize the work through a chart. Identify the process of joining (truncation or addition), the stem of the verb, and then join them together to show HOW they combine.
This, and then working through your vocabulary from Units 1-4 (focusing on the verbs) will prepare you for Tuesday. We have a holiday to celebrate on Tuesday - bring sidewalk chalk if you have it!
Russian I
Today we finished learning our Group Two letters (the tricksters) while we also reviewed our Group One letters. I think that everyone so far is showing me some impressive skills. I was very happy that while we were doing our cafe simulation you were able to order coffee drinks and read a Russian menu! That's really great work!
Over the weekend be sure that you're prepared for Groups One and Two. You should start working through the handwriting packet in earnest now so that you can start to complete the exercises. As I said to the Russian II/III students, if you have sidewalk chalk, bring it to class on Tuesday!

AP Seminar:
Tonight we have some important work to do in order to stretch you as you develop yourselves to be more creative and critical thinkers. Tonight you'll be watching the video below, analyzing your letter of the QUEST model and then completing your paperwork for class. So, here are your tasks.
Watch this TEDTalk and take notes on the following questions as you are watching:
1. Explain the story of Alfred Dreyfus?
2. What is motivated reasoning? What is problematic about this?
3. What is the scout mindset?
4. How are mind sets rooted in emotion? What are they and how are they different?
5. Seriously, what do you most yearn for?
6. How do you think this connects to our class?
Remember - answer these questions as bullet points, not necessarily as complete sentences or paragraphs. Be sure that you can show me your work on this if I were to ask for it.
Secondly, take a look at the Course and Exam Description booklet. Go to pages 11-24 and read carefully your assigned element of the QUEST framework. Read and annotate your section in order to better understand what that part of the Framework means. Be able to explain it to your classmates and to yourself!
Lastly, complete your paperwork - Honor Policy and Parent Contact Form - and turn those in to me next class.

Russian III Students - You should attempt to transcribe the verb using structural transcription. That can be found at the beginning of your Russian language textbook if you still have that. This will help us to move forward into the One Stem Verb System.

For homework tonight I want you to be practicing with your new letters A, K, M, O, T. Go through the handwriting packet and work with exercises that feature these letters. Practice your reading and writing. Remember that I'll collect the whole packet at the end of the unit.
Also, don't forget your Parent Contact Sheet too. I like to call parents and tell them how great you are.

English IV
Good work today on your characters everyone. Next class we should have a chance to finish up the first portion of the Character Project and continue reading more of The Canterbury Tales. For tonight, it would be most important for you to revise and check-in on your essays. Mr. Bernhard went through your work on Google Classroom and left comments for you all. Go in and revise your essays to address those comments. We will print and submit drafts on Friday - so it's important that you finish these revisions before that.
Advanced Russian
Next class you will have a quiz on the One Stem Verb System. You will be expected to know:

- how to tell stems from each other.
- how truncation and addition function in past and non-past forms.
- how mutations are triggered.
- how to transcribe infinitives, non-past, and past tense forms.
Hopefully our workshop in class today was helpful in addressing these areas. You should work with the verb handout I gave you as well as the textbook in order to discover more about stems.
Additionally, continue to review our work on cases as they are paired with verbs. Complete exercise 7A, numbers 1-10. Read and analyze the sentence, then change the verb and case in order to make a synonymous sentence. We'll review this work on Wednesday, after the quiz.
Russian I
You also have a quiz next week that will focus on your knowledge of the Russian alphabet and handwriting. You should know:
- the sounds that each letter makes.
- the shape of the letter in print and in handwriting.
- the cognate vocabulary from English.
On the quiz you will be asked to listen to Russian and write what you hear, to write words given to you in print, and to explain what cognates mean. Study and be ready!
Also, keep in mind that handwriting packets and name projects must be turned in on Wednesday or they will become zeroes.

Now that we know all of the alphabet and a bit about stress it's time to practice with words. Take the cognates that I have given you and practice with your reading and pronunciation of these words. Play with the handwriting too. If you haven't turned in your handwriting packet, make sure it comes in on Thursday so that I can get it back to you before our first quiz.

Complete the exercise by changing the sentence to past tense. Translate your sentences. Look for cases at work in the sentences, especially those triggered by the verbs.
We will review this work on Thursday as we continue to build on our work with stems. Keep in mind that you will also have a quiz on stems soon. Likely on Wednesday of next week.

If you have not yet completed your introduction and body paragraph for "The Me You Don't See" please make sure that you find time to go back to Google Classroom and complete that work. Next class we will hopefully finish our first drafts with a conclusion. Also, we will begin working in earnest on our Canterbury Tales project.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 8 September 2017
Russian I
Over the weekend you should be able to complete all of your handwriting practice packet. You do not need to do any of the word searches or any of the exercises where it asks you to translate from English to Russian. Do write all of the words that you are given in Russian in your best handwriting.
I will collect these packets on Tuesday. Tuesday will be a day that we will continue to work on phonetics and our sounds in the Russian language.
Advanced Russian
We're starting the process of getting more familiar with stems, endings, and how to combine different stems with endings. Over the weekend I want you to continue to apply what we have been learning related to non-past conjugations, past tense conjugations, and the different actions related to stems.

Now we know all of the letters except for the two silent ones! Hooray! I'll start to speak a lot more Russian with you now since we have a good base underneath us. For tonight as well as for the weekend you should be focused on continuing to learn the letters of the Russian alphabet. Eventually you will want to be able to read and write the letter without looking at your notes.
Be sure to practice with all of the letters and words in the packet. Give your best attempt at all of the writing in the packet!

We did not have a chance to get to our writing conferences today, and that's okay. Be sure to bring your writing with you on Friday so that I can review it then. In class today we began our study of The Canterbury Tales by looking at some historical information as well as a bit of the Prologue in Modern and Middle English. We'll read more of the text next class and work on our writing assignments a lot. Make sure that you have considered your brainstorming questions and that you have decided which aspect of yourself you are focusing on in your personal essay. Next class we will be very focused on the writing of this assignment.

Given what Ms. McCormick and I saw today about reading outside of class, I think that we're going to follow through on Thursday about making sure that everyone has read. Tonight you need to read from page twenty-seven to forty-one. You'll want to pay attention to how things are changing for Helmuth and for Germany as a whole. Take notes as you read - write things down as you notice these changes.
Remember to keep drawing what you say about the characters and events by tying your ideas back to what the book actually says.

On Thursday I'll be handing back your handwriting packets and we'll spend some time looking at a few places where we need some improvement (hooked letters are a bother). Don't forget that we'll have our first quiz on Monday which will cover the sounds of the alphabet and handwriting.
Tonight, you should keep practicing your reading and writing with our new vocabulary words. You have words which are useful for names and around school as well as phrases. Write each one at least once on your handout or in your notes (or both). Mark stresses. Read. Use the words with your family and friends. Add a Russian keyboard on your phones! Listen to Russian music on Spotify and read the titles. Use the Russian you're learning.

We started moving on to the new topics to cover in this unit (reviewing our last unit for Russian III and IV) and getting our new vocabulary together. Tonight, we've got a few things to do with our vocabulary and with the new grammar.
Russian IV - Read the passages and hunt for participles. Use the ending chart to organize them by types. Work backwards. What are the verbs? What are the который phrases? What do these things mean? Where are cases? Also, start reading Толстой - check out the first few pages.
Russian III - Complete the exercises on reflexive pronouns. Remember to write out the sentences to practice fully with the grammar. Translate and understand what is being said. What cases are being used? You may find it helpful to diagram the sentences and find the subject when using reflexive pronouns.
Russian II - Complete the verb work we started looking at today if you did not finish it already. Also the exercise B which we nearly finished reviewing today.
All Classes II-IV - With your new vocabulary you will see verbs and their stems identified. Hopefully now you are able to fully make sense of what the glossary is telling you. Work with four new verbs, try to work with four different stems. Do what we have been doing with our examples - What's the stem? What are the endings? How do mutations come into effect, if at all? What is the meaning of the verb? What are some cases we use with this?

Homework for the Weekend - 9 September - A Day
Russian II-IV
First things first we will have our first assessment on transcription and verb stems on Monday, September 19. Make sure that you are preparing for this assessment. To help you prepare and finish your learning on this concept, we have our homework this weekend. Only complete parts A and B in the instructions. We will continue to work on these verbs next week. Remember that you have to complete the verbs for your level and below you. My recommendation is to do each verb on a card, that way you have a study card for each type of verb stem. Use your overview sheet to help you complete this.
Also, continue working on your Global Simulation work in Google Classroom. Try to have that submitted if you can, if not, we'll have a chance to finish it in the computer lab soon.
Russian I
We also have Global Simulation work to try and finish if possible - you should be deciding on your Russian name as well as settling the debate between Moscow and St. Petersburg. These assignments are in Google Classroom. Beyond this, you should spend your weekend finishing your handwriting packet and practicing your reading of cognates and sounds.

Over the weekend, read pages fifteen through twenty-seven and complete your reading guide as you do this. Remember that if we have a quiz in class for our warm-up, it will cover these pages. You may use your reading guide on the quiz if we have it.

As we are getting more comfortable with the different stems, I want you to continue to practice with them to learn this system. Today we went over the (N/S -a) and (-a) stems. Use your glossary to find a verb of each type and take it through its conjugations. Work with these and learn them.

This weekend I want you all to keep working with your verb knowledge. Now you know (or have reviewed) the present and past tense endings for the conjugation patterns as well as knowing how the stems relate to the conjugation patterns - it's time to put all of this together. Take the five verbs that you have been working on and conjugate them for present and past tense. As you conjugate - do the conjugations in ST before going to Russian. Show how the stem combines with the ending, show what process happens, and then show what this means in Russian letters. It's my hope that things are starting to make sense to you with all of this.
Be prepared for a transcription quiz soon.

This weekend, work on your handwriting packets. You should complete everything up through exercise thirteen on page six. Feel free to work ahead if you would like. - the stem of the verb
- the structural transcription of the verb
- the present and past tense conjugation (use structural transcription if you need to)
- case governance of the verb
- Russian III ONLY - Aspectual pair of the verb.
You should focus on commonly used verbs - don't look at vague verbs, try to look at ones you actually use.
Russian I
You have your list of words to analyze for gender this weekend. Remember to practice your handwriting, your reading, and to identify the gender, the hardness or softness of the ending, and the pronoun (he/she/it) you would use to discuss the item.
English II
On Monday you'll be having a big quiz on "The Overcoat" - sections one through five. Here is a link to the online version of the text if you want to look at the whole thing. Here's how you should prepare for your quiz this weekend:
- Reread the whole story from beginning to end - we read it over several classes. This will help you to keep everything in order.
- Review your notes - pay attention to notes on the characters, the situation/plot, the conflict, and the main symbol.
- Prepare any questions about things you don't understand.
- Know any and all vocabulary from the story.
This will be a large quiz on Monday and will greatly affect your grades. Make sure that you are prepared.

Make sure that you account for all of your changes and read through it several times to make sure that it is correct and grammatical. In addition, try to add some adjectives for your nouns - this will help you to better learn all of the endings.
I will not be with you on Monday, so you will turn in your work to Ms. Ginocchio.
