Enjoy the long weekend! Do something for your community in the spirit of Dr. King to celebrate his legacy. I'd say go to DC and tour the monument, but the weather may not be the best for that.

AP Language

Today was our day for a writing workshop focused on rhetorical analysis. We discussed the importance of the rhetorical situation when considering the author's argument as well as the importance of the line of reasoning. It's especially important that our commentary on the evidence is connected to one strong line of reasoning that the author conveys in their text. It is also important that we have sufficient evidence to show and convey that line of reasoning to the assessor. I hope our review of the rubric and my feedback was helpful.

Take this feedback forward as you complete your FRQ on AP Classroom as well as your analysis of your quotation for the end of the color motif project. For your motif project, it's all about the one quotation. Show how the part (quote) relates and conveys the whole (argument). Remember that you've read the whole novel and you know about Fitzgerald, so you can also comment on his exigence and context for the novel. This writing assignment is not due until Quarter 3. So, don't stress this now.

This weekend your focus should be AP Classroom and any other assignments in SIS that are marked as missing or blank. I will have grades updated when I see you next.

English 10

Today was our day to make up for lost time and lost internet resources from last class. I really appreciate everyone's maturity and dedication to the classroom today as we worked to get things done and make this a better experience for everyone. 

Over the weekend, I would highly recommend making up for any lost time related to Unit 3 - World Research. If you are missing any part of the unit so far, you should work to complete that as soon as possible. Next class we will be finishing the final product and submitting that for review. This is the final grade of the unit and quarter - so I can't take it late. Use the previous lesson slides to help you gather all the pieces and work toward completion.

10 and 11 January

AP Language

Welcome back! It was good to see so many of you today in class. We had a relatively easy day since we had to complete academic advising for English today. While I was doing that, there was time to work on AP Classroom Progress Checks, Vocabulary, or get ahead on your motif projects. We started off with our reflection from the unit mini-project on RA (find that link in the folders).

As a reminder, vocabulary is due. Please submit on Schoology. AP Classroom work will be unlocked during class or Lion Time, so plan accordingly to complete that work. Next class will be your full workshop for the motif project, you may want to complete part of that work tonight to be better prepared for your class time next class. I also need to check your novels, so don't forget your notes. 

If you have anything missing, now is the time to complete those tasks. Please reach out if you need me for anything.

English 10

Today's class was a day for us to get our heads back on our shoulders and pointed in the right direction as we return to school and to Unit 3 - Research. At this point in the project, most of you are either studying your text (in some way, shape, or form) or you're ready to research the author/historical context to support your claim.

We understood at the end of today's class what our thesis is for this final presentation and what type of research we need to support that claim. Your task is to find the biographical or historical information to help you complete this project. By the end of next class you should show me your research notecard which includes your citation and your three notes.

Next class we will review the structure of our final project and have time to work. Keep in mind that you have just two grades left this quarter - so be sure to stay focused on completing these tasks.

AP Research

It's time to start the QUEST. Navigate to your PREP folders and begin working on your "Planning Log" and your "Reading Log". Document all steps that you take as you begin. Begin to consider your problem statement, gap, and question as it stands and as it develops. Try to be working with 2-4 sources per evening as we work.

Russian I

We're almost done with the alphabet! Tonight we have some more letters to practice with and sounds to learn. Be sure to review your notes daily and keep practicing with your sentences and vocabulary. We will have our first quiz on Monday and it will cover the sounds and shapes of the Russian alphabet! Your handwriting packets are also due on this day.

Advanced Russian

We now know more about the One Stem Verb System than we did before and that is incredible! Keep working and practicing with it to develop even more! You should be making your verb cards at this time (use our work in class as an example). Also, engage with the language! Take a look at Bunin's "Three Rubles" and try to find the verbs (Russian IV - Try to also find the participles! They come from verbs, so that counts!)

Homework the Weekend - A Day - 7 September 2018

AP English III

Today we talked about arguments in section III of  In Cold Blood. For homework this weekend you have three things to focus on. First, complete 5 vocabulary notecards. These vocabulary words come from your vocabulary bookmarks. Choose five words (from In Cold Blood, Didion, Ericsson, or the AP Multiple Choice). On the front side of the card put the word, sentence in which you found it, page number (not necessary if you chose it from AP multiple choice), other forms of the word (verb, noun, adjective, etc.), and its etymology. Google is one of your best resources for finding the prefix/root/suffix. THIS is also a helpful website. One the back of the card, you should put your own definition and synonyms (explain any difference between the definitions!). Remember – 5 cards on Tuesday, they will be checked for completion.

The second part for homework this weekend is to revise your outlines. Ms. Coco will be available Monday before and after school, as well as A lunch if you have any questions. Mr. Miller will be back on Tuesday. You can always email either/both of us as well if you have any questions.

Finally, work on your rough draft of your In Cold Blood essay. You should have ½ of the rough draft done by Thursday, Sept. 13. Come to class with a printed copy so we can have a writing workshop.

Period 4 – Thank you for your patience and cooperation during technical difficulties. I appreciate you all staying on task for that final activity.

English IV

No real homework to complete over the weekend. Do keep reviewing all of the new vocabulary (aka literary terms) that we learn on a daily basis so that we are able to keep moving forward! We will have a quiz coming up on those terms next week– so be sure to keep that in mind.

If we were in Russia we would be at a parade today, but we're in America so we're at school.  Here are your reminders going in to Wednesday.

English II

Make sure that you have finished your research cards for Wednesday.  You should have five completed cards and at least one on every topic.  Now that you know how to do your citations for the website, you should go back to some of your source material and try to do that work now too.  Next class we'll be focusing on finishing up our research before we are writing and constructing the websites in earnest.

AP English III

Russian II/III

Make sure that your character development sheets are ready for me on Tuesday.  Remember that all of the questions should be answered in Russian and are meant to help you fully realize the character that you are embodying for our final speaking presentation.

Russian III Students - You have the second task of going to our exercise and rewriting the participles as который clauses instead of as participles.  Next class we will continue to work on participles and delve into the difference between active and passive voices.

Russian I

This weekend you have your work on singulars and plurals in neuter and feminine gender.  Please complete the chart/worksheet by organizing your words by gender and then applying the notes we did today in class to create the plurals.

English II

Your homework is the same as what we have below for the B day classes.  We're going to six cards instead of five since we had a bit more time in the library today.  Remember that they should be organized by topics and reflect your sources.  Right now you should have at least two sources (one is a website and one is a book).  Next week we'll start plugging the information to the websites.

Homework for the Weekend - B Day Students - 5 May 2016

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  Here are your reminders going into the weekend.

English II

I'd like for all of you to spend time this weekend working on your research cards for our project.  By Monday, you should have five completed notecards.  If you are having trouble finding information on one of your topics (remembrance or resistance, for example), then spend time and develop more notecards on another topic so that you can meet your overall goal of five cards.

Next week we will start to put the information we've collected onto our websites, so it's important we work hard now to collect this information.

AP English III

This weekend I want you to spend your time reflecting on your portfolios and the written work that you have prepared for me this year.  Spend time especially with your timed writings.  Consider some of the consistent feedback you've received this year and make concrete plans to improve on those areas of your writing before we get to our exam on Wednesday.  For Monday's class we will be finishing The Crucible and then reviewing some last minute tips before the AP Exam.

Homework for 13 April 2011

Freshmen:

Next class will be your final class before Spring Break.  To start class we will have a warm-up check and I will be checking your two homework assignments that are due.  Remember that you will need to have your WHO, WHAT, WHEN, and WHERE notes for Act II Scenes 1, 2, and 3.  Furthermore, you will need to have your notecards for your project.  I'll be looking for anywhere from five to ten notecards.  Over break you will not have any additional reading to do, but you will need to keep researching for your project.  You should be moving on to your second topic if you are in Honors or continuing to research for your first topic if you're in Standard.

Juniors:

For tonight I would like for you to do some reading for me.  Take our discussion of Transcendentalism and use that to understand Henry David Thoreau's Walden.  In the textbook I would like for you to read the excerpts "Economy," "Where I Lived," "Solitude," and "The Bean Field."  As you read, you should take notes as to interesting quotations and ideas that relate to Romanticism and Transcendentalism.  We will spend some time working through this piece on Thursday and doing some work on our two Transcendental thinkers - Emerson and Thoreau.  Be sure that you're ready for your group meeting on Friday!

English III Weekend Work

This weekend you should collect ten notecards on your novel - your primary source. As you go through your novel, think about your thesis. What quotes and evidence support your idea? How can you connect the quotes and evidence from your novel to the criticism that you have been finding the last few days?

Bring your ten notecards with you to class on Monday.

Also, for those of you interested in doing some more research I would suggest Perkins Library on Duke's West Campus. If you are interested I will be willing to meet you at Perkins Library around 2:00 PM on Sunday for a few hours of outside of class research. Let me know by Saturday afternoon (5:00) if you're coming. I'll send an e-mail to those interested letting you know where to meet up.
