Happy End of the Week - 16 November!

AP Language

We had the absolute best time in AP Language today discussing and working through Chapter 8. I'm really excited to read your paragraphs and get you feedback on the writing that you did. I hope that you are seeing the way in which all of our work is coming together to support your tasks here at the end of the book. I hope that you can also see the improvement you're showing in your skills as close readers and thinkers. 

For tonight, read Chapter 9 and finish your motif tracker. Hopefully you're starting to have an idea as to what your visual will look like and perhaps what your thesis is for your writing assignment. Next class, I'll be away from you physically, but I'll be with you in spirit as I check in virtually on Schoology. If you need help with your motif tracker or preparing for your project, please make plans for Lion Time after Thanksgiving Break.

14 March - Tuesday Feels

AP Language

Today was a day focused on outlining and planning in preparation for our timed writing. Remember that you will write your essays in four classes. Each of the following days are focused on preparing for that eventuality. Today we reviewed the elements of effective planning and looked at each others' work to provide feedback. Next week we'll be doing a rough draft (so another version of today) and beginning writing conferences with me. Next class we'll be playing a bit of a game of Russian Roulette; don't worry, we'll all survive.

At this point, SourcePacks and Annotated Bibliographies are due. All ABs should be submitted by the end of this week to be scored. If you are having trouble, you need to come in and see me for help. 

AP Research

Today we begin our transition into Unit 5 - Final Elements. During this time we are focused on completing our final assessments, our academic research paper and our POD. You will be given ample time during this unit to write, work, reflect, and revise. It is now crunch time when it comes to data. You'll need to set yourself a drop-dead date to end your data collection and begin your analysis and writing.

Our next day for Peer Review will be on March 30. By this date you are expected to have four of the six sections completed. Remember, even if you haven't collected ALL your data, you can still write your analysis for the preliminary data. Then run the test again when you have it all and check for alignment. As you consider your conclusion, remember your hypothesis. Did the end come out as you thought it would? Why or why not?

Next class we'll be looking at Manzanar one last time. Be sure to bring our best friend as we work toward the end!

Firmly in the Middle - Wednesday the 14th

AP Research

Today we started talking all about the end of things because that is where we find ourselves. At the end. The section guide posted in the Classwork tab will review the requirements for your Conclusion/Final Directions section of the paper. Remember that if you've already discussed your limitations and implications, that you may choose not to review them again. This section of the paper can be pretty short - remember that the Manzanar paper was only about one page. You should also check in on your bibliography when you complete the paper - use Control + F to find your sources in the body of the paper. Make sure that everything is properly cited; ask for help if needed.

Friday the 16th and Wednesday the 21st are going to be working days for you. These should be days for you to finish your Academic Paper. We'll meet again as a group on Friday the 23rd to do another round of Peer Review - bring a complete draft of your paper to that meeting. Reflection questions have been updated. Begin working on your slides if you haven't yet. Hopefully the examples were helpful for you.

Reminders posted below are the same as what you will find for yourself. Remember that any missing assignments from this week should be submitted ASAP, don't let things pile up this quarter.

24 March - A Rainy Wednesday

AP Research

For today's class we finished reading the Manzanar paper and discussed the way in which the student creates a strong web of evidence and justified claims in order to show the assessor what they need to show. This paper provides a wonderful model of effective writing, academic style, and essential skills for success. Using this as a model for your future work is a great idea. There are other sample papers we've looked at so far this year too.

Right now, you should be focused on the completion of your academic paper. That is what this unit is for. Stay focused on writing, revising, and processing. Clarify the tools that you used and show how they were used by you to get the results that you did. Remember to avoid absolutes in your language, unless they're justified. The goal should be to finish the paper by mid-April.

On Friday we'll meet quickly to discuss next steps and what we'll find ahead of us in the road.
