27 October - Feminism and Weekend Time!

AP Language

What a great day to end the week in AP Language. We dug into Deborah Tannen and looked at the marking of women, the ideas of power, politics, and access, and of course feminism. This is another article that we're going to come back to a few times this year as we consider the roles of women in the texts that we read and the roles of women in our American society. We flexed our precis muscles at the end to get ready for our next round of FRQ 2 - Rhetorical Analysis. Remember how our work in class will always support the development of our skills.

Over the weekend, there are two chapters to read because they work together very well. Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 give us the opportunity to learn a LOT about Gatsby, Daisy, Nick, and the world of the 1920's. Pay attention to the idea of the past. We'll be building a timeline, so you may want to pay attention to what happens when in the lives of the characters.

Remember that revised projects are due by the 31st of October. I can give a bit of flex time if needed, but the majority should be submitted by then. Remember to focus on your audience, purpose, and message slides. Accomplish the goal of the rubric. Come to Lion Time or after school to conference. 

3 November - Thursday

AP Language

Really lovely day focused on Gatsby today in AP Language. The work we were doing around conflicts between past and present, fantasy and reality, and Gatsby and other characters is key. This is the mid point of the novel, and everything is going to turn pretty quickly. It's important to see what ideas are established before the changes occur.

This weekend is a great weekend to focus on getting ahead. If you've fallen behind on reading or the motif project or vocabulary, get yourselves caught up. Monday's class is a working day focused on resubmissions and our motif projects. Make next class great by being thoroughly prepared. I liked the energy today! Let's maintain!

AP Research

Lovely day to end Unit 2 in AP Research. Next week we're focused on starting our work on developing method. This is going to be a long, hard, winding slog, but we will reach the promised land of IRB approval and access to our research subjects.

This weekend should be a writing weekend for you. Pull together your resources to help you write - the PDFs in Schoology, your earlier work (your poster, annotated bibliography, source list, research question organizer), and the templates you have to help you. Give me a solid hour of writing this weekend to start working. I've also given you a new PREP reflection for Week 11 to complete. This is the beginning of Quarter 2 - mark that in your reflections.

Be sure that you use this opportunity to get ahead; there's a lot looming - so listen to your teacher and do what I say, please. See you Monday.

3 and 6 December

AP Language

We really killed it today. We zoomed in on a significant passage in the forest of Chapter 3 - and we found a lot of significant meaning as we kept examining the text. I'm really happy with what you're seeing in the text - as you keep looking you keep finding. All of this work that we're doing is so important in building the skills to analyze and build a rhetorical analysis that works.

Over the weekend you're reading Chapters 4 and 5. Pay attention to the idea of time, especially past versus present, it's super productive. Build links to the ideas of fantasy/reality as you look at these chapters. You should also be able to finish your vocabulary at this point. 

Next class we're going to work through Chapters 4 and 5 as well as take our next step on our project workshop. You'll need to come in with Level 1 annotations of your text for the next workshop.

English 10

Today was a day to move into Step 2 of our new unit. We solidified our choice of country and then began the process of researching that country and building our slide deck about the country. We went to the library and heard from Mrs. C as she reviewed the tools of the library catalogue and the online databases. I love these databases - they do a lot of the work for you.

Next class will be our whole class workshop. You'll have the entire class to finish your Step 2 work. If you finish, you'll be able to move on to Step 3 - finding an author and a text by that author to study. Keep in mind that you have to finish each step before you move on to the next one, so no half-stepping and no missing assignments!

Homework for A-Day: Wednesday the 18th

AP Research

Today was a workday and it looks like we're being pretty productive in the room. Remember that I'll be checking your PREP folders over break for eight folders. You're getting eighty points on this assignment, ten points for each folder. I'm looking for completion in this assignment, and I'll be reading some elements (like your reflections).


Next class is another POD and then our final workshop of the year! Make it a great last day!

Russian I

Today in class we learned how to make sentences talking about what we have and what we don't have - all focused on using Genitive Case. I was happy to see that so many of you were engaged in working and writing today during our workshop.


Next class we have a quick quiz on vocabulary and cases. Be sure that you've studied your four cases (nominative, accusative, genitive, and prepositional). Know their jobs. Know what they do to words. Also know your Chapter 1 Verbs - There's a vocabulary section too! After our quiz it's going to be movie time; bring snacks for the group if you'd like.

Advanced Russian

Today we went over the skills that you'll find on your unit exams, which you can consider your New Year's gift from me. Remember Russian III and IV, you'll see some of the preliminary skills from Russian II since we're all in this together. After that we split off into groups to review through our exercises, study vocabulary, and Russian IV learned how to form verbal adverbs (what fun!).

Friday is for celebrating the New Year! We'll sing, cook, and finish our presentations. Remember that you can bring extra food or snacks, but I'll be teaching some Russian recipes for you too.


There are plenty of exercises in the textbook to help you review your skills. We'll take a look at them after break to spot check and help each other out.
