25 March - End of the Quarter

English 11

An easy day to end the quarter today, everyone! I hope that you had a great day getting the time that you needed to finish up major assignments, presentations, and extend your knowledge and skills around poetry. If you were absent, we do have next week to finish up this quarter. I'm available on Wednesday, April 2, to complete any last assignments for Quarter Three. Please be in touch and make an appointment if needed. I'll continue to accept work submitted online.

Next class we'll be starting our work on Drama and Character - Unit 4. I've got some videos for you to explore, author research, and some discussion boards. I won't be with you, so you'll need to complete all of your tasks online. I posted your video to go over your tasks for Thursday's class on Schoology. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the plays we have coming up! As always, if you have questions, please reach out!

Tuesday the 25th - See Ya Next Week

English 11

Today was a busy day in English 11. We were starting a few tasks which we'll continue to work on and finish over the next few days. Remember that I'll be out for the next two classes, so today you started some of the tasks that you'll be finishing up. Let's review what we did and talk about what we have coming up.

We started the day by doing some vocabulary review. Your quiz will be next week on Wednesday. Your review assignment is due on the day of the quiz. It's a formative grade, the quiz will be a summative one. After our vocabulary time, we worked on analyzing non-print texts. I really liked the outcomes that you all were getting to related to the images, the way to draw details from them, and the connections that can be built. After that, we went to the work on our presentations.

The presentation work will be the main work for you on Thursday and into next week. It's time for you to find sources, finalize your research question, and consider your argument. If you're working in a group, each person needs to have ownership of a part. On Thursday and Monday you'll continue to find and process sources to contribute to your final presentation. You'll also be focused on reading so that you can get finished with your books. 

I'll keep up with you the best I can while I'm away. Be respectful stewards of our space and welcoming to our guest. I look forward to seeing where your presentations are going and to wrapping up our unit in the coming weeks.

13 November - Middle of the Week

English 11

Today was a great day in English 11 because we were working on speeches and arguments. I loved the way that you were making connections to other authors and texts in this unit and the concept of responding to conflict. We focused on Booker T. Washington and ideas like conformity and appealing to audiences. It's also good that we see that there are two different approaches to the same idea in the same time period. There was a multiple choice review to get us ready for next class (we have a quiz) and we did some work on understanding writing and writing structures.

The end of class looked at preparing for future tasks. We've got a vocabulary quiz coming next week on List Three words, and we'll keep working with our research work as well. Remember that the goal is to find multiple sources that you can use in your letter. We'll be moving into the planning and writing phase soon.

Next class is a substitute day - you'll have time to work on your Research Write-Up, focus on vocabulary development, and then you'll take a quiz on reading non-fiction. Follow the rules of the classroom and support our guest in the classroom. I look forward to a good report. I look forward to seeing you all next week!

8 November (A Bit Ahead)

AP Language

Happy Wednesday (or whatever day you see this, but this post is for Wednesday, November 8) Everyone! 

I'm away today for some yearly medical appointments today. You've got a pretty straightforward day in class to catch-up and process Chapters 1-6 of The Great Gatsby. The slides posted here and in Materials - Current Lessons will guide you through what you should do and the conversations you should have. Here are the steps for today's class:

1. Get your notebook and have your laptop ready. Open up your Motif Tracker Chart. You may want to access the earlier key passages or the online text to search easily for where motifs are activated.

2. Complete items from the To-Do List (Slide 4). Try to get through 2-3 items. There are some Progress Checks open for you if you want to practice on AP Classroom. The main focus should be your motif trackers. Work with your classmates and use your resources!

3. After spending a bit less than an hour with the text, start to process what you're seeing and think about meanings. Draw connections between motifs and the characters, settings, conflicts, and symbolic objects. Consider the question - Who/What is winning and why? This will take you right into the final slide about Fitzgerald's arguments on American society. Use the DADS structure - and remember to be as specific as you possibly can be!

Next class we'll be looking at the article by Joan Didon. Didion is an amazing author and a bit of a favorite of mine and Mr. Friedman's. As you read, consider our conversation a few days ago related to the past, memory, and truth. This is a great piece to use as you consider Nick and the way in which he operates as a viewer and as a narrator.

19 May - Out Playing Nurse

I hope that all of you had a good and productive day in class with the substitute. Be sure that if you missed class that you review the resources on Schoology and get caught up for the time. Remember that we don't have many days left for the quarter. Soon we'll just be focused on Final Exams.

10 May - Getting Ahead Since I'm Out

I'll be out the rest of this week for medical appointments and some self-care, so I'm getting ahead on posts for the week.

AP Language

Today's class was about reflecting, settling up some business, and then moving forward to close out the quarter. If you were absent today, be sure that you complete the Reading Inventory before 15 May.

We opened class with the form that's linked on Schoology to note our very raw takes on the AP Examination yesterday. Your honesty and candor in your responses are so helpful for us as we improve this class for next year's students. We'll be asking for a lot of feedback over the next few weeks. 

After that we got into business. The Reading Inventory is the last one of these this year. I asked you to do it at the beginning of the year, and now we're doing it again to track our growth and progress. After that, it's time for conferences and choice board items. Be sure that you are ready to close out your choice board and thus your Q4 grade next week. All items should be in and conferences should be had.

6th Period - I'm out on Thursday. The substitute teacher will give you a document for your to do list and instructions on how to access everything. Please also do the Substitute Form linked on Schoology since I'm out.

I'm also out on Friday. So be sure to check for updates and tasks on Schoology. You do have your Style Writing reassessment on Friday; complete that during class on Friday.

AP Research

We keep on continuing along here in AP Research to get through our final classes to our exam. We had a pretty full class today, so we reviewed the expectations and options for the Final Choice Board. Remember to choose two artifacts to complete, submit on Schoology, and prepare to present ONE on May 31 for our final examination day.

English 10

Today's class is a very easy class to round out the week. You've got a substitute today, since I'm out meeting with my cancer doctors and my care team. Everything is looking good, so we just need to confirm that. Today you've got two things to take care of. Follow the instructions on the TO DO list from the substitute. 

Complete your Final Reading Inventory from the link on Schoology. Log-in with your FCPS ID and your password. Do your best. I'll see the results in my system. Once that's done, get Persepolis and complete your reading and study of the next two chapters.

Don't forget to do the Substitute Form on Schoology.

Getting Ahead - May 8

AP Language

Hello AP Language. I'm away today for some medical appointments. Be respectful of the space and each other, as you always are, and our guest in the classroom.

For those of you taking AP Calculus today - good luck! It was definitely one of my harder AP Exams in high school, but I was well prepared, had a great teacher (shout out to Mr. Smith), studied, and did my best. Remember - just get as many points as you can. Take the derivative and move on!

Tomorrow we have OUR AP Exam! It's our state championship! Today's class is designed for you. Formalize your game plan and complete whatever you need to in order to be ready for tomorrow. If you're studying tone words, great. Working on AP Classroom, great. Working on Choice Board items, great. Please submit your artifacts so that we can conference together later this week and next to finalize quarter four. Be sure to review the earlier recordings posted on the Updates feed and the YouTube channel from College Board also linked below.

Tomorrow morning, come in through Door 1. Get your gift bag from me or Mr. Friedman. Go to your testing location. Slay the beast. Keep me on your shoulder. Just keep writing!

AP Research

Continue to build your AP Research Final Examination Items. Remember that you're stacking up 100 points for this. You should complete two artifacts to do this. Once you have it complete, go ahead and submit it to the space on Schoology. Be sure that you've ordered your cords and taken care of other End of Year Senior Business. Remember that your final examination is on May 31 and I will finalize grades that day.

13 April - Still Gone, End of the Week/Quarter

I'm very sorry to be away from you all on the last day of the quarter. I appreciate that I have seen a lot of things get turned in. I'm grading and giving feedback as you complete items. Here are a few quick reminders for the long weekend.

AP Language

Be sure to submit your final assignment for this unit. Your grades will be resetting pretty soon once we finish the scoring of the practice AP Examination. If you have missed any or part of the practice exam, please see me next week to get that settled. The best times would be Wednesday after school or Thursday at Lion Time. Juniors won't have Lion Time on Tuesday because of required programming.

AP Research

We'll have one final working day and then begin our presentations. I'll schedule those with you on Monday. Use this last weekend well! You'll be getting your first AP Exam out of the way, and then we'll move on to reflecting on the year and having some fun before graduation.

English 10

Today is our first day of Quarter 4 and our unit on graphic novels and Middle Eastern literature. We're going to start by diving in with our country of focus and our type of literature to focus on. If you didn't finish the assignment today in class, please do so by the next time I see you. Go to EdPuzzle, log in with your FCPSSchools account, and find your assignment. You can always redo this if you'd like. We'll start reading our book from Iran next class, so knowing this information about the country will help you to better understand the book.

Homework for The End! - 22 May 2018

English IV

Today was Senior Day! Congratulations to our future graduates. I hope that you all enjoyed the day and the festivities that were planned for you. As a reminder - I will not be on campus Thursday, which is your actual last day of class. Many of you were not in class because of the Senior Day festivities. For this reason I will continue to accept any more novel projects - please be sure that it is turned in tomorrow at the latest.

Today was also a day to cash in rubles or Falcon Feathers for extra credit. Please see me tomorrow before or after-school to do this in order to improve your standing at the end of the year.

On Thursday you'll have a substitute teacher and a chance to earn more points on your Frankenstein essays. Attend class, enjoy Young Frankenstein and then write about it. Should be a great last day.

The B2 exam is scheduled for Tuesday the 29th in our classroom. We will begin after lunch. You will have A lunch.

AP English III

Today was a visit from Student Services to talk about planning for next year. Then we had a chance to also talk about what planning for next year is like. As you continue to make your decisions and start your planning, come and talk as you wish. We also cashed in rubles and Falcon Feathers - remember to see me tomorrow with any last cashing-in that you may need to do.

Tomorrow we have our AP Exam! Yay! It's time to cross this finish line! I'll be out there to see you all and give you some of my super early morning energy. Remember to get a good night's sleep and a solid breakfast in you to prepare. Look over your tasks, skills, strategies and notes. Chill out and be cool.

Thursday you'll have your short story exam. Be sure that you have clear understandings of all five of our short stories (Orwell is not on this exam). There will be multiple choice, matching, and a short answer question. In this test you will be challenged with some questions to find the BEST answer. After that we'll have course evaluation time.

Remember that exam exemptions will be finalized on Tuesday of next week after I grade your unit tests. Check in after your grades have been posted.

Snow Day Number 3 - 17 January

I posted yesterday's post, and then DPS cancelled school about twelve minutes later. I think that's the fastest cancellation ever.

See the post below about what you need to do before our next classes. A special note to Russian I, II, and III. If you see a zero for the viewing guide assignment for The Irony of Fate it means that I do not have an assignment from you. When we return to school you will only have one day to turn in a resubmission. It may be a good day to watch the film and make up the time when you were doing something else in class. We will discuss expectations when you are with a substitute at our next class as well.

Catching Up After The Substitute - 4/8/2014

I hope that things went smoothly today with the substitute.  Please make sure to pay attention to the following announcements.

AP English III

Your paper portfolios are due tomorrow.  Please make sure that you have all of the required documents assembled in the correct order.  I will not take any questions related to the papers from this point on.  You'll have to trust your own judgement or that of a friend.  Please make sure to use the Purdue OWL to check your citations as I find it to be the most helpful and thorough bibliography assistant.

I will be accepting papers from 7:00 to 3:30 PM.  If I am teaching or my door is shut, please place them in the box in front of my door.  Make sure that your name is on your envelope.

In terms of Invisible Man be sure to complete the reading of chapter twenty-four.  There's another sex scene here, but the Invisible Man's reaction to the events within the sex scene will show how much he has progressed.  As you look at the chapter, continue to use your motif charts.  We will begin our motif project next class.

Over break you will be assigned the end of the novel.  Feel free to finish it early if you would like.

Russian I

I hope that you all felt successful with your quiz today.  I will have them graded tomorrow and your scores on PowerSchool.  For tonight, continue to work on your vocabulary development.  I'll give you some goals next class for how to spend your Spring Break on your Russian skills, and we will continue our study of the one-stem verb system.

Lastly, I'll give all of you the joy of the Винни Пух marching song and some of his other songs, too.
