It's the last week of school this decade! Be sure that you're completing your major milestones so that your break can be restful and relaxing!
AP Research
Today in class we had our first POD viewing session - Big Hero 6 and Cultural Hybridization. I think that watching the POD helps to really demystify the experience and the task that we have ahead of us. With the fire drill, we didn't have enough time for individual work, but that will find us on Wednesday.
On Google Classroom I posted the slides for today's class. The most important slide is probably the final slide where I outline what I'll be looking for in your PREP folders. Be sure that if you have any edits for your project that you have made them. Wednesday will be a day for working. Be prepared!
Russian I
Today in class we did a lot of case review today in order to understand how the cases are used and how to change words to show the cases.
Be sure that this week you are working to complete your work related to learning the cases. You'll have a small quiz on these on Friday. There's also always vocabulary to study and review. There are also exercises to help you with your studying. Remember that you can't do all of the second exercise - avoid talking about playing!
Advanced Russian
Today was a class for reviewing key grammar and vocabulary skills related to our most recent quiz. I hope that the review of the topics was helpful, the notes are posted. Remember that if you need additional support you can make quiz corrections and also check the exercises that you were given today.
Tonight focus on completing your projects and having them submitted before Wednesday's presentations. Russian III and IV only have FIVE MINUTES to present. You have your rubric, be sure to be prepared.
Friday is our New Year celebration! Be ready to have some fun and bring snacks if you'd like.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 21 November
AP Research
I really enjoyed our conferences today and the clarification that you were able to bring to our conversations. If we didn't conference today, then we will on Monday. Over the weekend, it's important that you work to complete any of these questions to add specificity to your method and research proposal.
Over the weekend, complete the Method Outline form. Be sure that you're working through all the parts of this element of your paper. Having this done will lead you to a much easier time when writing the paper. Additionally, complete as much as you can of the DPS proposal. Be sure that all of your supporting documents and tools are with it so that you can pass IRB.

Today in class we finished our review of the cities in Russia and then we had time for our verb quiz reassessment. If you weren't in class today, you can complete the reassessment at home or with me. Just remember that if you want to redo the vocabulary score, then you'll have to do that with me.
Over the weekend finish your work on Prepositional Case by completing the exercise on page 53. Read the sentence and make the needed change so that you can show prepositional case. Next week we'll learn a new case!

I liked what you all were doing because you're showing growth in your skills. Keep working and studying and you will keep growing. Next week we'll have a short week - so it's time to review our skills before we move on.
Complete your exercises related to your new grammar topics. Russian II should complete exercises in Chapter 5 - numbers 12, 15, and 16. Russian III should complete exercises in Chapter 8 - numbers 7, 8, and 11. Russian IV should read the section of Chapter 11 on Participles and complete the guided notes.

Homework for A Day - 19 November 2019
AP Research
We were a bit of the lab classroom this morning with guests and visitors streaming in. Thanks for being a wonderful group during all of that. Today we were focused on developing, clarifying, and defining a specific method for your specific question. This was a way for me to provide feedback to all of you on your method section of your draft proposal. Tonight you should take a look at the questions and the work that we have done today. What questions can you answer? What clarity can you provide? What can you do to make sure that your method is workable to others? Have you clearly defined all of your tools to complete your method?
It's important that everything aligns. Can you draw a straight line through all of the parts of your proposal? Make changes, make updates and edits. We'll conference on Thursday about your proposals.
Russian 1
Today in class was all about reviewing everything we've done. We conjugated verbs, applied prepositional case, and we worked through a review of our cities. Next class we'll finish our review of the cities and then we will have our retake of our quiz on verb conjugation. Be prepared for that! Study and review. Know how to use the word wall as a resource. If you need additional help, let's meet up at lunch this week!

Today in class was all about time. Telling time. Working with time expressions. Understanding that numbers don't really change, but they cause a lot of changes around them. I hope that as we are practicing daily you're getting better and stronger with using and navigating our use of numbers.
For tonight we have our exercise on translation. Read through the letter in English. Find what you can translate related to time expressions and work through those translations. Use the notes and work we did with filling in the blanks.

Homework for the Weekend - A Day - 15 November

Today was a workday for all of us. I was reviewing your proposals and you were working with each other or on your own. I'm planning to sit with you at the beginning of next week to go through your proposals and address feedback. As you are working this weekend, don't forget that we have a new reflection posted for this week.
I would highly suggest that you all spend the time that you need this weekend working through your method. Do you have a firm understanding of what data you need to collect and how you are going to get it? How are you taking these generalized methods and making them specific to your question and study?
You'll have the chance to recoup your points next week if you missed any. Please review your work as it is returned to you. I'll hopefully have them all returned to you on Google Classroom by the end of today.

Today in class we finished the first part of Doctor Zhivago and did a bit of review on prepositional case. Next class we'll review prepositional case even more. Be sure that you've finished the exercise where you use the verb "to live" and change the location into prepositional case. Take this time to learn this pattern so that you know it for the rest of this class.

We went to the grocery store today to learn about Russian habits related to food. We also spent our time using numbers in a variety of ways to talk about quantities and the cost of things. Fun times! Over the weekend you should all be focused on learning your numbers both in terms of how to spell them and how to use them. I hope that our work together today was helpful in reminding you of the key patterns when using numbers.

Homework for A Day - 13 November 2019

Today we had an assessment followed by working time. I was happy with what I saw on the assessment. If you missed something, it was probably because you were confusing unethical practices with poor method design. Remember that if we're working in the spirit of ethics, we are doing what is needed. There are some issues that we can't correct, but we need to be able to explain them clearly.
Tonight your first priority is to complete your DRAFT proposals. Submit that to Google Classroom so that I can read and review. After that, it's time to start constructing the pieces for your beast. Think about your method. Conference with your peer. Log your work and conferences! Think about your consent forms and instruments. Keep grinding away!

Today in class we started our work with cases. We're focusing on learning the PREPOSITIONAL CASE first because the changes are pretty straightforward and easy to track and see. Tonight, practice with this first case by completing the exercise given to you. Look at the question. Write your answer using the verb жить - to live. Be sure to put the word in the parenthesis in the PREPOSITIONAL CASE by changing the ending.
Remember that we'll have our verb quiz reassessment next week. Review and study - let me know what you may need.

Russian Students - You all have quizzes on Wednesday. Be aware of what you should do in order to prepare as well as the topics for your quizzes.
Russian I - Your quiz will focus on the use of nominative, accusative, and prepositional cases. You should be able to explain why a case is being used and how to change the ending of a word in order to show that it is in a particular case. Practicing with our exercises (1.8A and 1.8D) as well as reviewing our classwork today would be very helpful with this.
Additionally, if you are missing any work or need to redo any tests you only have this week remaining for that. I will not accept any reassessments past Friday of this week.

Homework for the Weekend - 10 January - B Day
Russian I
Today in class we put pen to paper to try and write about ourselves using our cases. Some of us were really successful and I can see that others of us need to spend some time reviewing. Remember that the main job of all of the cases is to say what the word is doing in the sentence. Not really what it means. Keep in mind that you should be sure that the word is in the right case for it to have the job you want it to have.
Over the weekend, be sure that you have completed your practice exercises from the textbook. Also, know your different words of the day - practice and use these as well as the other vocabulary from Chapter One. In your textbooks, a great practice is the reading passage at the start of Chapter One. Go through this and try to find the use of prepositional and accusative cases.

Today in class we learned our first transitive verb of motion - to carry with your own power. Remember that with this verb and others like it you'll have a double accusative situation for your item and then the destination. Be sure that you're looking over your cards regularly so that you learn these new verbs thoroughly.
This weekend you have exercises focused on prefixes - Russian II should complete 62-64 focused on the по- prefix. Russian III should take a look at the exercises 86-88 and 93-95 which focus on в-, вы-, при-, у-, под-, и от-. As you get familiar with putting these prepositions on your verbs, be sure that you are also putting these verbs with logical prepositions to discuss movement and destinations.

Our first deadline is coming up on Monday, the AB. Be sure that you are using your group-mates as well as the various documents and supports that I have given you so far this year to complete this task. You'll submit a hard copy of your AB on Monday and then we'll start to talk about how we transform these AB's into IRR's. As always, take a look at the sample papers in Google Classroom. Can you see elements of the AB in their writing? How is the IRR different from the AB? What types of writing and structure will you need to add to the IRR so that it does what it needs to do? How is the rubric for the IRR helpful when completing the AB?

- On Monday you'll take A lunch and then report to the Dell Lab for the Field Test. Ms. Oertel will be your test proctor. You'll complete listening and reading comprehension in Russian. This is a great way to get ready for your future AP Russian exam as well as to just get a general feel for what your skills are in Russian.
- On Wednesday you'll have your unit examination. Both classes will need to be familiar with telling time, taking about time expressions with prepositions and working with numbers. Outside of that, the exams are different. Russian II will see a lot of questions around aspect and aspectual choice. Make sure that you know when you should use perfective versus imperfective. Russian III will see questions related to reflexive pronouns and other types of pronouns. The exam will cover Chapter Five (Russian II) and Chapter Eight (Russian III) be ready!

If you did not have the chance to finish your sentences about yourself and your friend, then make sure that you get on Google Classroom tonight to finish that work. I will import grades tomorrow and give feedback before I return the assignment to you online. The assignment is a good practice for your mini-test next week. The mini-test will focus on verb conjugation and case declensions (nominative, accusative, and prepositional). During our review in class, many of you were able to generate the right answers - keep studying and practicing. - Work through your exercise pack which I gave you today. Complete page one to review verb conjugation. Complete the other pages to review the use of accusative and prepositional case.
- Prepare for your reassessment on conjugation of Chapter One verbs (first and second conjugation). In order to study, see the above suggestion.
- Continue to work on your project about you and your friends. We will have part of this due formally before Winter Break - you will be expected to write several sentences about your friends and start to construct your PowerPoint. This will help you prepare for your test on our first three cases (nominative, accusative, and prepositional).
I am available on Monday morning and during lunch on Monday if you need additional help.
Russian II/III
Over the weekend you should all be actively preparing for your unit exam as well as your performance task. Hopefully you are using your study guide to determine where you need to focus your efforts. I think that a good place to stay focused is on time expressions and numbers.
Russian II - You should continue to work through preparing for your timed writing. Remember that you cannot write the letter in advance and bring it, but you can bring vocabulary that you've developed to help you. Remember that in this task you are talking about your life in school and out of school - you can do this by talking about a day or by talking about a week or even a year - it's up to you.
Russian III - You should be completing your elements of your visuals so that you can construct your visual on Tuesday and finish preparing for your presentation on Wednesday at UNC. Please ask for my assistance if you need it as you work through the construction of the visual.

We had some fun today working through Act II, Scene 4 of Twelfth Night. If you have any missing assignments to complete (the Acting a Fool project or take-home test) be sure that you get that work in to us next week. Next class you should be ready to work through the remainder of Act II as well as engage your acting talents to read through the text even more.

Today was a very productive if not a fast class. We did a lot to review counting rules and how to talk about time in a lot of different contexts. I also handed out the study guides for your unit examinations. The unit exam will fall on 12/20. You'll also have your field test for Russian on 12/18 - so our last week is going to be one full of testing.
Tonight for practice and preparation be sure to review the dialogues at the beginning of the chapters. Here are links to the audio files for Chapter 5 and Chapter 8. As you read and listen to the dialogues you should identify key skills and vocabulary in them that align with your study guides.

Homework for Russian Students - 4 December 2017
Russian I
For next class you should have TEN sentences which talk about yourself, your male and/or female friend, and yourselves as a group or them as a group. State what happens (verb conjugations) as well as where the events happen (prepositional case). I am going to assess these sentences for completion as well as for general accuracy.
If you were not satisfied with your work on the most recent quiz, study and prepare for a reassessment. I am available during lunch on Tuesday and Thursday for extra help if you need it. Hopefully with more time and practice the verb conjugation patterns will stick with you.
If you are in the independent study group, make sure that you have finished your second project by Friday - guidelines are on Google Classroom in this week's announcement.

For next class you should have TEN sentences which talk about yourself, your male and/or female friend, and yourselves as a group or them as a group. State what happens (verb conjugations) as well as where the events happen (prepositional case). I am going to assess these sentences for completion as well as for general accuracy.
If you were not satisfied with your work on the most recent quiz, study and prepare for a reassessment. I am available during lunch on Tuesday and Thursday for extra help if you need it. Hopefully with more time and practice the verb conjugation patterns will stick with you.

Homework for the Weekend - 30 November - Russian Students
Advanced Russian:
Hopefully after spending time with your numbers and counting rules you are a bit more comfortable using and navigating time expressions. Russian II - If you did not finish your answering of the questions in Google Classroom as well as your recording of your questions and answers, make sure that you finish that work by Monday. There are also your time expression exercises at the end of Chapter Five.
Russian III - I hope that you are satisfied with the final draft of your paper. You should be actively preparing to answer questions and discuss this essay. Developing sample questions and preparing answers for those questions is one of the best ways to prepare. Also, don't forget to finish reviewing your time expressions as well. On Monday we will be working through some talking to solidify our knowledge around time. Prepare for a quiz on time expressions next week!

Homework for Russian Students - 28 November 2017
Russian I
Today we focused on learning how to put words into the prepositional case. Remember that this case is used to discuss where an action occurs. It is also used to indicate what something is about. You should have been able to add locations for your sentences which you have written about yourselves and your friends.
To finalize this skill, complete exercise 8D at the end of Chapter One. Fill in the blanks by putting the words in parenthesis in prepositional case.

Lastly, don't forget that you will have a quiz on Thursday before we go back to watching Doctor Zhivago. You will need to be able to tell if a verb is first or second conjugation and if it is transitive or reflexive. You will also be asked to conjugate several verbs in Russian.

Homework for A-Day Students - New Quarter - 1/20/2015
Welcome back from the long weekend and welcome to the beginning of the third nine weeks and second semester. Here we are at the halfway point on the way to summer vacation.
English II
Using your new vocabulary for the day create a paragraph which uses five of these words. When you use the word in your paragraph, try to make sure it's clear you know the meaning of the word. Don't just say something like, "I had a tsar." Tell me something along the lines of. "The tsar hated everyone and nobody could do anything about it. He was too powerful." Show me what you learned. You can use vocabulary from the lecture/game about Russian culture or from Pushkin's poem.
Your prompt for the paragraph is to write about going back to a place you know really well. I might write about going back to my mom's house in Alaska. If you need help, review the poem. Think about how Pushkin felt about the going back home. We'll work more with Pushkin and the poem on Thursday, but make sure that you do this vocabulary work tonight.

You need to write about four more rooms and tell me about two things in each. This leaves you nine sentences. Use the example as a model, but vary your sentence structure if you feel like you want to. You won't lose points for being adventurous.
A quick note about some rooms as you put them in prepositional case: If the ending is ая in the nominative, like гостиная, then the ending becomes -ой in the prepositional, like в гостиной.

We will finish presentations about Russian holidays on Thursday and then move on into the new unit on weather. Also, I have a wonderful preview for you all - we're finally going to start learning plurals in all of the cases! Get ready for a lot of work with your favorite Russian sound Х!

Homework for A-Day Students: 3/10/2014
AP English III
Hopefully we're at the end of winter and we won't be missing any more days due to snow or weather. With that being said, here are your reminders for tonight and really to take you through the week.

- Next class you will have your assessment on Invisible Man. Remember that you will have identifications (quotes/objects), a personal response related to a moment of the text which was challenging for you, and then finally an essay on a pattern which you have seen between these various African American authors (Baldwin, Lorde, Hurston, and Ellison). However, you may choose to draw on another author (MLK, Twain, etc.) to develop this essay question as well.
- On Friday your groups will present on your chapters. Be sure that your group has a visual aspect to guide the conversation. Also be sure that you get to the end of chapter ten by Friday's class. The teaching will be used to launch into the next chapter under consideration.
- Thursday your research outlines are due. Make sure to follow all of the requirements which I gave you last class. Turn in your proposal as well as your outline in the envelope on Thursday. You will have until 3:00 PM and then it will be considered late. You must turn in a hard copy, electronic copies will only be accepted with prior approval.

Today was our Prepositional Case day! Hooray for the Prepositional Case! It's important to explain where things happen. For tonight, you have seven exercises to complete using the prepositional case. Be sure to use the charts within the pages so that you can develop your knowledge here. Do the exercises on a separate sheet of paper and be ready for a completion check next class. We will then review some of the exercises before we move on to our research projects on the former Soviet republics!
