AP Research
Today in class we watched our third POD presentation. Hopefully my opening comment of "lots of little mistakes" made sense as we discussed scoring and applied the rubric to this POD. We've finished watching for now, there will be another round in April as we prepare our own PODs.
Remember our discussion today on PREP folders. They are useful. They are needed. They are important. You should be working on updating your PREP folders daily and they should reflect where you are in your process. If you don't understand what you need to do before the second check, let's be sure to talk on Thursday.
The main goal right now is to write. You should be actively constructing your introduction. We will peer edit these next week on Wednesday. Be ready with a working draft.
Russian I
Good work today reviewing our key cases - nominative, accusative, genitive, and prepositional. It's a good time for us to review since the grammar section of the last quiz was a very difficult section for all of us. I hope that as you reflected on your work on the quiz you were able to see your mistakes and correct them.
From there we went on to our projects about ourselves. Remember that for this project you should write an answer for each question and pair that with a sentence. This is a great way for us to review our cases and learn them. I gave you some additional exercises on accusative and genitive to help you.
Don't forget to review the information on Olympiada so that I can register you. It's a fun day!
Advanced Russian
Today was a day for reviewing before our big exam next week on Monday. Russian II students presented their work and shared new words with us as we dealt a bit more with aspect. Then we worked with our particular grammar topics related to counting, numbers, aspect, time expressions, and verbal adverbs. Use these exercises to continue to prepare for your unit examination.
Next class we'll have our numbers reassessment and have some final practice work before the examination. Be ready with exercises complete to show if asked. There's also the Olympiada materials below. Take a look at the requirements for competition and let me know on Thursday if you plan to compete.

Homework for Tuesday - 12/10 - A Day
AP Research
Today was the kick off of our revision and workshop days. I saw writing, conferencing, and revising. Remember to refer to your IRB notes as you are working and charting your progress. If you're making changes, consider why you're making them and how you can communicate your intentions to your assessor.
I've posted Reflection 13 for you to complete in the Classwork Tab on Google Classroom. You'll also find today's slides as well as the Consultant Letter and Forms in electronic format. Remember that I need a form for each of your consultants before we leave for break.
Next class is a workday as well. You'll have a bit of a small task to complete in getting feedback and giving pitches if you need yourself something to do. This is a good time to check in on your PREP folders to make sure that they are ready to be checked at the end of next week.
Russian I
Today was a day for us to review what we already knew and delve a bit deeper into sentence building and cases in Russian. Today in class we learned how to create sentences with direct objects by using the accusative case or the genitive case (if we have a living male). Remember to learn the process for changing endings to use this case.
Tonight, practice this case further by completing the practice exercise number five by putting the items in parenthesis in accusative case. Use the verb in the question to start your answer. Also, there is a fill in the blanks exercise for you in your regular textbooks. Complete Exercise 8A and 8B on page 52.
Don't forget to study and review for your test reassessment. You can retake the test next week!

Today in class we had a quiz. I'll have these back to you on Monday to be reviewed. If you plan to reassess then you should plan to do that next week before Winter Break begins. For tonight, you should focus on your upcoming projects - the space to turn them in is below. There is also all of the information related to preparing for the Olympiada of Spoken Russian.
Outside of this, focus on your vocabulary development. Without the words, the language doesn't work. Next class is a film/culture day with Anna Karenina - I hope you'll enjoy it!

Homework for the Weekend - B Day Students - 22 February
AP Seminar
Wonderful work this morning delving deep into our documents as we discussed for a solid half of class. I appreciated hearing a variety of viewpoints and ideas as we were discussing and sharing. I decided that for our first foray, and since we had limited time, I'll be giving everyone a 100% for the first Socratic Seminar. For the next we will be attempting to earn all 20 points on the rubric.
At the end of class we formed our groups for our following documents. This weekend you should read all three and complete an analysis sheet for each. The one that is your groups to teach should be thoroughly read and analyzed. On Tuesday you will have time to work as a group to write your lesson plan and prepare to teach. We'll have lessons on Thursday and our final Socratic Seminar the following Monday.

Today in class we spent a solid hour speaking and using Russian to discuss various modes of transit for Russians on a daily basis. This was great work as we practiced with various verbs, prepositions, cases, and we learned a lot about culture. Then we took some time to review exercises before we wrapped our day.
Remember that all projects should be submitted by Tuesday. The exam will fall on Thursday. If you have yet to present your poem - be sure that this is ready on Tuesday. There is a space on Google Classroom to submit your projects.
We also have final exercises to complete. Russian II students should focus on the translation exercises (not the whole paragraph, just the sentences/dialogues) at the end of Chapter 6. Russian III students have a fill in the blanks exercise as well as the translations in set B.
I'm looking forward to seeing those of you competing at the Olympiada tomorrow! See you at Duke at 10:00 AM.

Today in class we worked through our Unit 1 Test. I'll have these graded and returned to you next week. Over the weekend make sure that you have completed everything up to this point in PowerSchool. If something is missing, it needs to be turned in ASAP.
Over the weekend you should finish memorizing your poem and complete any project work (About Me). There is the Chapter Two Preview to work through as well. Skim the Chapter and review the grammar and vocabulary points. You should start to focus on the adjectives for your vocabulary.

Homework for B Day - 8 January
AP Seminar
We just keep on moving forward, don't we. I hope that today's writing workshop on using transitions, key language, and citations in an effort to help your reader follow your ideas was helpful. By this point, you should be actively building your Annotated Bibliography. Be sure that you use the documents that you already have in order to produce a good quality piece of work.
Next class we'll stay engaged with building our work. Remember that your AB is due on the 14th, just about a week from now!
Advanced Russian
We are building our cards and building our knowledge. Today we reviewed our prepositions, our verb that means to go by transit, and the ideas of the A, B, and C contexts. As we continue to learn new information, continue to practice and review.
We also discussed in earnest the elements of the poet project. Remember that there are two parts - the biography and slide show (in English) and the memorization (in Russian). By the end of today you should begin your research and start outlining your slides. Check out the study guide for the Olympiada if you are going to compete - it's in Google Classroom - so that you can begin to prepare for the competitions.
Related to grammar - we have exercise 37, 44, and 46 on the paper we worked on today. You should also consider any work related to reassessments on old tests or projects. Know your conjugations and your cases!
Russian I
Tonight for homework you should continue to study and review the two cases that we are focused on this week - accusative and prepositional. Remember that these two cases have two very different jobs - and that will help us to use each of them appropriately. As you are working through Exercise 1.8 A and D in your textbook - fill in the blank by putting the word in the appropriate case.
You should also continue to work on your poetry memorization. Remember that the memorization isn't due until the end of the month, but the English based biography will be due much sooner. Lastly, stay aware of your grade in PowerSchool - if you are missing a unit test, or a project, or you would like to re-do the project/unit test, you have very little time remaining to complete this!

Homework for Winter Break - B Day - 20 December 2018

Over our holiday break I think that it is so important that you all keep moving forward with your team work, but also begin to transition into your IRR work as well. Use the Unit Plan to know what will be assessed, when it will be assessed, and what the general process is.
On Google Classroom I've given you two packs of IRR and Scoring Commentaries. The rubric is also located with the scoring commentary. As you begin to craft and work through the IRR process be sure to use your previous work as well as all of the materials provided to us by College Board to be successful on our first performance task.
Advanced Russian
Come inside. Please. Come inside. Ask questions. Do what you need to do in order to close the gaps. Do something to make yourselves better than you were the previous days. Take advantage of what I'm giving you.
In this spirit, do what you need to do over break in order to close those gaps. I think that vocabulary is a big place to spend your time. We also have some of you missing projects. Those should be submitted as soon as possible.
Outside of this there is the Olympiada preparation (see the folder posted on Google Classroom). There is also our Chapter Preview. Chapter 6 is for Russian II and Chapter 10 is for Russian III. We are all going to be moving in to Verbs of Motion (time to talk about taking things and people and ourselves to different places)!

Today we began our next long process which is the learning and understanding of cases in the Russian language. Cases are a way of organizing a language and explaining what job a word has in a sentence. This requires us to understand a lot of grammatical vocabulary and terms, so I'll be teaching you a lot about grammar, in general, through this unit. We are starting with the Accusative Case since it is very easy to manage and learn.
Take the paper that I gave you and complete the required exercises. Put the words in the accusative case. Make the change to the endings. Be able to translate, if you can.
Additionally, be ready for your reassessment. Go back to our slides in Google Classroom and be able to conjugate verbs and use possessives. Spend time with your vocabulary to be able to learn it. It takes time, so put it in.

Homework for Spring Break - A Day Students - 29 March 2018
And now we have all made it! My break won't start until I get through all of my grading, but that will be soon enough. Here are your reminders for what you should be doing to keep yourself busy over break.
English IV
I hope you all enjoyed the ending to Frankenstein today. Consider if what we watched can help you to better complete your essays. I'll start assessing your introduction and body paragraphs over the weekend, so check in with PowerSchool to see your scores and your document for comments.
Over break, you should all get started with your novels. If you read a bit and decide that you don't like it, you still will have time to switch when we begin. When we return we will finish our essays and then move on to our novel projects - remember that you'll have a weekly assignment with your book!
Advanced Russian
Over break you should all finish revising your rough drafts and probably get everything you have into a Google Document. That will make it easier for us to pull together our work and finish the project.
I would also like for all of you to prepare for the next part of the unit. It'll be a place for Russian III and II to be together for a bit - look at pages 271-282 which go over the plural declensions. Then, check in on exercises 6, 7, and 9 to review the usage and declensions for yourself. We'll go over this when we return!

When we return, we'll finish working on Ночные Ласточки - Night Swallows - and complete the guides. I liked that many of you were very enthralled in the first episode. Over break, focus on studying for your quiz. I realize that I didn't hand back your work, so we'll push the quiz to Thursday instead of having it on the day that we return.
Remember that the quiz focuses on adverb formation and usages as well as sentence combining. Focus on your vocabulary and your exercises that we reviewed today in class.
Also, break provides you Russian students (I, II, III) a great chance to interact with some Russian. Maybe some reading? Maybe some TV watching? Maybe some movies? Maybe some new Russian music. As always, if you want suggestions, on Russian options, let me know. If you haven't signed up for Olympiada, take a look at the materials with your DPS login and think about joining our team!

One paper was given to me in the parking lot as I was getting in my car - no joke! - so now papers will be collected after Spring Break. Please have your paper for me on Monday morning when we return with its supporting documents. Your paper will be subject to a late penalty.

Homework for A Day Students - 27 March 2018
It's the beginning of Quarter 4, and we are starting in earnest. Be aware that our final quarter is a quick one; we'll have fewer assignments this quarter, but that means that each one will be worth a lot more!
English IV
Today we spent time really focused on our essays, and then we went to the computer lab to focus on drafting. On your Google Drive document you should now be focused on developing a full introduction paragraph as well as a full first body paragraph. I'll check in on these at the end of the week and give you a grade on this work. I gave you a good version of the body paragraph, but an okay version of the introduction today as a model. Use these as you are working. Remember the topic of your essay. Use and explain your examples!
Advanced Russian
Next class we will be in the computer lab for half of our class focused on our vocabulary and grammar projects! Be sure that you apply the notes from our writing conference today today so that you can complete your drafts. We'll be constructing visuals and final drafts next class - so be ready for that with finished and corrected drafts.
We will also have a short vocabulary quiz next week. It will focus on nouns, adjectives, some verbs, and translations. I think that this quiz will be relatively easy for you - if you've been consistently working on your project, there should be no issues.

I want to upload the instructions and preparation materials here so that you are able to start preparing. I would like to register our teams and begin practicing by this Friday. Homework for A-Day Students - Weekend Edition - 10/8/2015
Students - Here are your reminders for the weekend. Make sure that you complete these tasks below to get you ready for next week.
Russian II and III
This weekend focus on some specific verb pairs within chapter four to develop your lexicon in Russian. Study the pairs located on page 141-142 and 157-165. As you complete the exercises on pages 164-165 complete only the ODD sentences (1, 3, 5, etc.) Make sure to write out the sentences. Think about which verb is needed and in which form - use the clues in the sentences.
Russian I
For the weekend you should spend time making sure that your project is complete and shared with me in advance of Tuesday's class. Please send it/share it to me at mrmillerjhs [at] gmail [dot] com. In addition, make sure that you continue to study and review your notes and work this weekend. By this point in the class you should be confident and comfortable with all of the Russian letters and the sounds they make - if not, things will only continue to be difficult.
ALL RUSSIAN LANGUAGE STUDENTS: Start preparing for the OLYMPIADA! Study your packets! Begin to prepare!

You have no homework to complete this weekend since we had a major project due in class. Russian II and III
This weekend focus on some specific verb pairs within chapter four to develop your lexicon in Russian. Study the pairs located on page 141-142 and 157-165. As you complete the exercises on pages 164-165 complete only the ODD sentences (1, 3, 5, etc.) Make sure to write out the sentences. Think about which verb is needed and in which form - use the clues in the sentences.
Russian I
For the weekend you should spend time making sure that your project is complete and shared with me in advance of Tuesday's class. Please send it/share it to me at mrmillerjhs [at] gmail [dot] com. In addition, make sure that you continue to study and review your notes and work this weekend. By this point in the class you should be confident and comfortable with all of the Russian letters and the sounds they make - if not, things will only continue to be difficult.
ALL RUSSIAN LANGUAGE STUDENTS: Start preparing for the OLYMPIADA! Study your packets! Begin to prepare!
English II
You have no homework to complete this weekend since we had a major project due in class. If you have any missing assignments from our Russian literature unit (project, quiz, etc.) - make sure that it is completed no later than Wednesday the 14th to receive credit. Homework for A Day Students: 3/19/15
Russian I and II - Continue to practice your spoken Russian outside of class. Remember that your journals are due Monday, and bring them to class with you. Also, bring back the vocal sheet and viewing guide you worked on today -- You'll be finishing the film with Mr. Miller when he returns.
Also, remember the Russian olympiada at Duke this Saturday!!
English II - You caught a break today since we read a short story from our textbooks, but you absolutely need to be on p. 111 by Monday. We will have a quiz, so make sure you read carefully and take notes on what you read!

Олимпиада!
Russian Students!
Don't forget about the Olympiada of Spoken Russian this weekend at Duke. The competition will begin at 9:30 and end anywhere from 12:00 to 12:30. The competition will be held in the Languages Building on Duke's West Campus. You should park at the visitor lot for the Bryan Center and then walk around Duke Chapel and Perkins Library to the Languages Building.
There will be light refreshments for you. I hope that you enjoy your competition this weekend!

Homework for A-Day Students - 3/3/2015
All Juniors - Even though you weren't in class today we still did a lot of work. Please see me outside of class (I'd recommend tomorrow morning) so that we can go over what you missed.
Russian II
Today in class we worked through the rules and procedures for using fill vowels in the genitive plural. Please focus on learning these rules and these patterns. For tonight, I would like for you to do some work with the genitive case - either singular or plural depending on the situation. For homework tonight, think of your favorite dish (mine would be macaroni and cheese with bacon and kale). Go through your house and think of what you have a lot of (много) and what you have too little of (мало). Write sentences expressing what you have.
Use the genitive plural if it is a count noun (something like apple where you can count the individual apples). Use the genitive singular if it is a non-count noun (something like flour where you can't count the individual grains, you just look at is as a whole thing.) We'll use this to do our work on Thursday.

For homework tonight I want you to continue working with the three verbs we studied more today - нравиться, хотеть, любить - as well as working with your vocabulary and with cases. Using your chapter two vocabulary, complete the ten questions by filling in the blank. Then, using your knowledge of cases, take the supplied answer in the nominative case in parenthesis and give the answer. Here is number one:

Information about the Olympiada can be found at this link. For those of you interested, I will have a training session next week to talk about how to prepare for this. If you are a senior and would like to take the AP Examination for Russian, please let me know and I'll get you that information.

You have your next reading goal for next Wednesday. Be sure that you are reading nightly to accomplish your reading goals. In addition, continue focusing on the characters and the vocabulary you are learning as you read the text.
